LUMBER-GUIDE MECHANISM.
To all whom it may concern:
novel construction and combination of the.
parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the guide mechanism. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
A is a frame provided with vertical sidebars B having outwardly curved lower end portions 6. C are horizontal arms which project rearwardly from the upper parts of the side-bars B at a short distance below theirv top portions. These arms C are provided with sharp pointed hooks c at their rear ends which project downward, and D are braceplates secured in the angles between the arms and side-bars and securing them in position. E are crossbars arranged between the side-bars and between the arms, and which complete the said frame.
F is a serrated roller mounted to revolve between the upper end portions of the sidebars B, and f is the shaft which supports the said roller. This roller is preferably hollow, and it has a ratchet toothed wheel G secured Specification of Letters Patent.

to one end of it. A gravity pawl g is pivoted to one of the side-bars B by a pin it, and it engages with the teeth of the wheel G so that the said roller can be revolved freely in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1, but not in the reverse direction.
The frame A is hooked onto the top of a pile of lumber, or any other stationary support, and the boards to be placed on top of the pile are slid upon the serrated roller which permits them to be slid upward, but hinders them from sliding downward.
This device is used to facilitate the piling of lumber, and its use is found to be very advantageous.
What I claim is:
In a lumber guide, the'combination, with a frame formed of two side-bars and a series of crossbars extending between the said sidebars, of a roller journaled in the upper end portions of the said side-bars and arranged in the same plane as the said crossbars, laterally projecting arms secured to the said side bars under the axis of the said roller and provided with hooks at their ends, brace-plates secured in the angles between the said arms and sidebars, and ratchet mechanism which permits the said roller to be revolved in one direction only.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
