REVERMBLE MAGHIN APPLICATION FILED o Kai/66666 with the WILLL'XM T. RUSSELL, OF ROCHELLE, ILLIN REVERSIBLE MAGHKN 13TH GIMKMP,
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Petenterl July- 21, 1908.
Application filed. October 25, 199?. fieriel-lle. 399.34%
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, WitLiAM T. RUSSELLL' btetes, residing at a citizen of the United, Rochelle, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Machinists Clamps, of which the following is e specifics. tion.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheep reversible mach nists clamp for holding articles to be opereted upon onlethes, planets, drill presses or other i'naohines, a clamp in which the position and pressure on the clamping screw is elweys at right angles to the surface of the iece piste or bed of the machine in which the work to be clamped rests; e clon p in which there ere a plurodty of pivotal points on which. the pressure of the screw bolt (on be edjustebly' applied and therehy afford the widest verticel. and horizontal adj usti'nent in clamping, and in which the pressure of the screw bolt and clern is always in it direct right angle bed or face plate of the n'xechine to which the clamp is attached.
The manner in which I accomplish my ob ject is described in the following specifics" tion and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is e vertical elevation showing the clamp in position on it bed plate clamping e piece of work thereon.-' Fig. 2 is e, longitudinel vertical section on the line 2-2 Fig. 3, Fig. 3 is :1. top plan view and Fig. 4 is e vertieel sectional View of the pivot hlock.
in the drawings A is the body of the clamp, In the centre] longitudinal line of this body is e vertical slot In the interior of the clamp this slot extends longitudinellyto the inside C of the ends 11;. This interior extent of the slot permits the i'ree end of the clernp to be raised vertically till the fixed end is close to the shank ottheserew holt F, which extends through the slot as shown by the dotted lines in. Fig. l.
Tlhe base line G of'the clamp is curved es shown. in Fig. 2 and the ends D and E are rounded so that the line of contact on the article E held by the clamp, will be always parallel with the axis of the screw l In the top of the ch mp ore oscrios of trol'isverse concave pivot scots H. The number of these seats is limited only by the size of the body A, length oi. the slot ll, dien'ieter oi the screw F and pivot lilcclr .l. The pivot block 1 shown. in cross section. in .llig. 1 is cylinldrieel in form and loss a transverse eentrsl e 'icrture J adapted. in size to permit the block to slip freely over the Shit-Elli of the screw bolt F as shown in Fig. Ii. The cylin co drical pert ll. of the ilock is ods ted to wit the concave seats H in the body A, and the flat part L forms osect for the nut M as shown in Fig. l.
. The pivotal joint i ormi-zd by the juncture of the cylindrical pert lEI oi the block I end the concave seat hi-permits e rotary adjust mentoi the his l whiohgthe pressure oi ecithin i position it is pissed is ot o )Bi'iitmtll 3 J to the plains oi. the suit-er .(l of the berth) face/"plate 0i machine on whiel}; .the w .i i clamped. This pivo srrsng 'i'ieirt. pro-:1 vents the thru t, pull end crampin. oi the clamp and screw which. is uneveiclsb ein the ordinary means used for clamping machine work.
The distance from the seats lil to the end I), oi the body A is greater than that of the end E. This difilerenee provides it greater range of ad ostmeiit, as by the reversal ofthe clenm the loo or short ends l can he used ht the e? oi'sctei and 9o ol the Wmw: to he o to" i the bed i or the fees plots oi It is obvious thet the c l. s. What i cieim rind desire to secure hy-Leta tors Patent is:
A mechinists chimp consisting of e low gitudinel curved'lsxiy having it longitudinal central Vertical slot, and transverse eo11 cave pivot-iii soot in the parallel walls of the slotted part of seirl body; end s. pivotel block portly cyli'odriccl and therehy adopted to fit and rote/tori said see-t, seid block having a centrel aperture et right angles to-the exiel center oi. said block, the rnergiii. of said aperture being; silepted for e. t for e not; at S01, w on not, seid screw being oriented helsecured in the bed or '1 cc i ate oi c neehi'iie end to extend through said slot in sec olemfp end aperture in sold block:
2.- ;A ineclunists chimp, consisting oi e 1019-. git'udinnl body ililfi 'lll 'lf vertically inclined ends, it vertical lougitmlinal control slot and transverse concave seek-s in the wells of the slotted pert oi said boil. o pivotal. hiock.
ported in either 1 brook noting: it i 1 centre: aperture illikllfizill to H Elle screw bolt; and a screw belt and nut, said boltbein' adapted to extend through said 8106; and 1'). 00k sndte be attached to the bed or face plate of a machine.
3. I11 a damp of the kind described, the combination with emeii'l body having a 10ngimdinel slet and erensverse concave seats; (if a. pivotal block adapted to be supported in said seats, and a sei'ew boit extending through said slotted body and ivotal block, said bolt 10 having a nut and being adapted to be attacked to a bed and face plate of a machine. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
