Description

PA TENTED JULY 21, 1908.
E. PISHBURN..- VEHICLE WHEEL.
APPLIGATION FILED SBPT.10,1907.
Attorney INVENTOR EZRA FISHBURN, or ovnnsnooir, ansas.
VEHICLE-WHEEL.
Specification t Letters Patent,
fPatented July 21, 1908.
Application filed September 10, 1907. Serial No. 392,094.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EzRaFitsnBURN, citizen of the United States. residing at Overbrook, in the county of Osage and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful -ImproveInents in Vehicle -Wheels, of which the following is a specification.
- My invention relates'to improvements iii cushion tired vehicle wheels. adapted to be used on automobiles, bicycles, and'similar vehicles, and the object of the invention is to simplify, improve and reducethe cost of con struction to a minimum and provide a wheel which Wlll be strong and durable in its construction. a
'With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the combination and aggroupment of parts, as will be hereinafter more in detail described and specifically clain1ed. a
In the accompanying drawings to which reference is had and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure -1 is a cross sectional view of a wheel showing the location and, aggroupment' of the several parts. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of a portion of the wheel broken away, showing the spring sections of the severalparts, Fig, 3, is a detached view of one of the 11 per movable lates and Fig. 4:, is a modi 'cation of the plates shown in Fig, 3.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views. Referring to the drawings, A designates a peripheral covering of rubber or other substantial material and which is secured by means of lacing or in any suitable manner,
as at b. a
a cushion tire inter osed between the covering hand a num er of T- s'ha ed upper movable plates C, arrangedseria y in sections with n the covering and around the wheel. v passed a series of cable wirfesi 1 clearly shown in Fig. 1 of ,the drawings. These plates C are provided upon their inner surfaces with thimbles c which engage the upper ends of coil springs D. E designates lower duplicate right angular or Lshaped stationary plates, upon the inner and horizontal surfaces of which are secured thimbles of sufficient depth to engage and securely hold the lower ends of the coil springs l) in lace, hereinbcfore mentioned, these thiro les effectually preventing the displacement of said springs durm the reel rocatin action of the inner Throu h the tire isc-ientspace between the vertical portions of a said plate for the tongue or web 0 of the up per T-shaped plate to be projected and play therein as the pressure upon the spring located between-the rimsand plates require, when the wheel is in motion.
F designates a folly, around which is secured a metallic band G, said band being in- T-shapecl plate C, the arrangement of the I lower plates E being such'as to allow suffi terposed between the lower L-shaped plates I E and the felly, and to which said plate-E, is secured. v
H designates an inner rim secured to the fell in the ordinary manner.
n Fig. 4 I have shown a modification of the operative plates illustrated in Fig. 8,
where n the numeral '1 desi 'nates an upper rec procating, horizontal plate having its ends 2, 3 bent downwardly at right angles to:
ward the body portion thereof, and provided centrally upon its inner surface with a tongue or web l. 5 and 6 designate lower stationary lates, having their ends 7, 8 turned upwar ly at right angles to the body portions 5,
6. By such construction and arrangement of these plates, a space or groove is formed between 5 and 6, within which'isprojected a tongue or web {1 of the movable reciprocating plate 1. The object of the downwardly and upwardly bent ends of these plates is to.
give greater strength to and to resist side pressure of these parts during their sperm tron. l
Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Let i ters Patent; i
1. In a vehicle wheel, the combination with the peripheral coverin secured together with lacing to the folly or t e wheel, a cush ion tire, cable wires passed'through said tire,
alfelly,."a metal band passed. around said telly otvangular lower stationary and ripper movable l shaped plates; thimbles secured to the inner surfaces of the piper T-shaped movablmplates and the angu ar lower stationary plates and s rings having their ends :located in the thimb es.
2. In a vehicle wheel, the combination with the peripheral coverin secured together with lacing to the telly oi the wheel, a cuslb ion tire, cable wires passed through said tire, a folly, a metal band passed around said telly, angular lower stationary and'rnovable upper T-sh'aped plates the latter being hrznovable jill connection with the band, thimbles secured 1 In testimony whereof I effixmy signature, to the/Dinner surficeirsl of the1 uplper T-sheped in presence of two Witnesses.
move e ate an t e engu er ower statlonv ary pletss, coiled springs located between FISHBURN' the upper and. lower lates, and held in said thimbles secured to t e inner surfaces of said plates, and an inner rim secured to the felly.
, Witnesses:
EDW. PLA'nr, ADAM ECKHART.
