FEED-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
I Patented July 21, 1908.
Application filed January 20, L908. Serial No. 411,631.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS G. GRoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to feed boxes pro vided with a lower part from which the animal eats and with an upper part automatically supplying the former.
The object of said invention is to regulate more perfectly the amount of such supply, to fasten down the top by the same means which will lock the regulating slide and generally to improve the serviceability and simplicity of the box.
To this end my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section of the same from front to rear. v
A designates the body or casing of a feed box having approximately the form of the letter J. Its horizontal lower part is open on top at J and constitutes a trough out of which the animal may eat. At the junction of this horizontal part with the vertical part of said box the vert cal partition O is arranged having at its bottom an arched opening C for the passage of grain from said vertical part to said horizontal part under said partition. The inner faces of the side walls of said box are provided at the front thereof with vertical guide-ways D for a vertically moving.slide B, which constitutes the front of the said box and is arranged immediately in the rear of saidpartition C, but extends much above the latter, its upper end being at the top of the vertical part of said box or very near the same when in its lowest position. The said slide or movable front is provided with inward projections or teeth T arranged in vertical series. A fixed rod F extends across the interior of the box at the upper end thereof close behind the said slide G designates the cover,
fitting upon the to of said box, but allowing the said front or s ide to be adjusted up and down in front of it. This cover is provided on its under side with a bolt H, adapted to slide under said rod, thus locking the said cover in place, and also to engage any one of the said teeth or projections T according to the vertical position of said slide or front, thereby serving as a fastening device for simultaneously holding down the front of said cover and holding or locking said slide against further descent.
Then the box is to be supplied with grain, the front is lowered to entirely cut off communication between the vertical and horizontal parts of the box, and the cover is re moved, the bolt H having been previously ulled back by means of a stud h, extending from it up through a slot 9 of the cover, so as to be easily operated from the outside the grain is then poured into the box, the cover replaced and the bolt shot again, locking said cover. When the animal is to be fed, the bolt is withdrawn sufliciently to free the front A, which is then raised to allow the grain to flow down into the horizontal art of the box. The slide A may then be owered again to cut off the supply in said lower part of said box until the grain already received therein shall have been fully consumed; or if preferred the said slide may be locked in a higher or lower position as desired, to close more or less of the opening C, so that the animal may be automatically supplied with food as the same is consumed. The chief value of the vertical adjustability of the slide or movable front is to adapt the opening at will to any one of different kinds of grain, but it also serves to accelerate or retard at will the downward flow of said grain according to the rapidity with which the animal eats it up.
It is quite impossible for the horse or other animal to open the box, as this requires a withdrawal of the bolt, which cannot practically be accomplished except by the insertion of the human finger in the slot 9, the stud it being wholly in said slot. There is a distinct advantage in using the same simple means to lock both the cover and the front of the box, also in making the front of the box serve also as afeed regulating slide. The
partition C braces the sides of the box and also affords a front brace for the lower part of said front, Where the pressure of the grain will be chiefly felt. Its opening C establishes the maximum for the flow of grain. The box as a whole is very strong and simple.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A feed box provided with a cover and a feed governing slide and with a fastening de-' vice adapted to simultaneously lock front of the cover against rising and the slide against descending.
2. A feed box provided with a cover and a feed governing slide and a fastening device carried by said cover adapted to simultaneously lock said cover and slide.
3. In a feed box, the combination of a movable cover with a fastening device car ried by the front part thereof and a feed governing slide having a series of projections arranged to be engaged by said device to hold said slide, at different points of adjustment, against descent, for the purpose set forth.
4. In a feed box, the combination of a movable cover with a fastening device carried by said cover, a feed governing slide having a series of rojections arranged to be engaged by said evice to hold said slide against descent and a fixed part arran ed to be engaged by said device to hold sai cover closed substantially as set forth.
5. A feed box provided with a vertical movable feed governing slide having on its inner face a vertical series of projections in combination with a bolt adapted to engage any one of said projections and a cover carrying the said bolt but independent of said slide for the purpose set forth.
6. A feed box body consisting of a vertical part and a horizontal part in combination with a vertically movable front provided with a vertical series of projections on its in- 4 ner' side, a cover, a transverse rod attached to said body and a bolt attached to said cover, the said bolt being. adapted to be moved under said rod and under any one of said projections substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' LOUIS G. GROH.
