n acacia.
Be it known that l, Orro Felon, asubject of the King of Sweden, and resident of Saltsjobaden, Stockholm, Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Transformer-Furnaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawing accompanying and formin a part hereof.
his invention relates to improvements in electric transformer-hirnaces. In such iurnaces the melting space forms as Well known an annular crucible around a central ironcore, the said crucible being during the melting-process kept closed by a cover. in order to obtain a uniform melting in. the whole furnace all parts of the same must be accessible and be uniformly charged. For this purpose the cover of the crucible has heretofore been carried out in a number of sectors removable independently of each other. Such devices have, however, the disadvantage that on account of the great number of joints and the repeated removals of the cover-sections o enings will be easily formed between the atter, such openings Further it is not ossib e in the transformer-furnaces heretoore known to obtain a uniform distribution of the material to be charged in the whole crucible ii the said material be charged in non-melted condition.
The object of the present invention is to remove the said disadvantages, and it con- I sists, chiefly, in that the cover for the meltin s ace is rotatably supported whereby it wil e possible to observe all parts of the melting space and to "charge the same uniformly through a single or some few open' ings. The cover may suitably consist of a single piece so as to obviate cross-joints the tightening of which always is connected with great dificult'ies. a
in the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows a vertical section, and Fig. 2 shows a lan view oi an electric furnace forming one form of embodiment of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 re resents the masonry in which the crucib e 3 is formed, 2 the cover of the latter, 4 the primary winding of the furnace, 5 the ircn-core of the same, .6 the charge-opening of the cover 2, and 7 rollers su porting the cover 2 so that the latter may e rotated. By the,

said arrangement of the cover will be gained that by rotating the cover by hand or use chanically all parts of the crucible may be easily observed and material may be conyeniently charged into any part of the meltmg space.
The charge-openin may be closed by means of a cover Which may be secured by a hinge or, preferably, to a small car running on a track, so that the said cover may easily be moved to the side.
in using a movable cover having onl one charge-opening the furnace may eas' y be brought to work air-tightly by providing a Wateror san -seal between the movable and the stationary parts, the charging being accomplished by a hopper having an upper and a lower valve, as is usual in gas-generators, or by a screw o'r'the like, inwhic case the tightening is eliected by the material itself.
The cover 2 may be constructed either as a usual arch-vault resting partly on an outer and partly on an inner ring, or as a cupola resting only on an outer ring, and it may be supported by rollers journaled at the circumierence of the cover, as is shown in Fig. 1.
In the construction of the mechanical parts of the furnace care obviously must be taken that no annular circuits are formed around the core by the metal used in the construction of the furnace. Tracks and the like at the cover must, therefore, be provided at suitable points with insulating joints in order to prevent secondary electric currents in the same.
I am aware that furnaces having the cover and the masonry forming the melting space rotatable relatively to each other are well known, and I, therefore, do not claim such furnaces broadly, but so far as I am aware electr c transiormer furnaces have never, been constructed in such a Way and I, there fore, claim the above arrangement in combination with electric transformer furnaces.
Having now particularly described my invention, what i claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An electric transformerriurnace having a masonry forming a melting s ace, and a cover rotatable relatively to too said masonry, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 2. An electric transformer-furnace having a stationary masonry forming a melting space, a cover closing the said melting space, I the said opening, substantially as and for the and rollers supporting the said cover in such. l purpose set forth.
:1, manner as to allow olitboing rotated about i In testimony whereof 1 have signed my a central axis, substantially as and for the name to this specification in PIG:1-(}NGO ol two 5 purpose set forth. subscribing Witnesses.
3. In an electric transformerr-furnace the combination of a stationary nmsonry forming at melting space, a rotatahly jonrnoled cover for the said melting S men, said cover 10 having a clim'ge-oponing, an a cover closing OTTO FRIOK.
