^ Stearn-Boilers, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention is an improvement in auxiliary domes for steam boilers, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof-Figure l is a longitudinal section through a part of a locomotive provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the auxiliary dome. Fig. is a perspective view of the locking and releasing mechanism showing the valve open. Fig. 4 is a similar view with the valve closed. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the dome and fountain, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of the dome and fountain.
In the present embodiment of my invention, the auxiliary dome A. is arranged on the boiler B, at a suitable distance in front of the cab l), and is connected to the fountain C, by a steam pipe a, passing directly from the dome to the fountain. The dome A is of the shape shown in Fig. l, being provided with a hollow annular flange a near its bottom, and at its bottom with a flange a2, the flange being connected to the boiler B by the rivets a,
The steam passes 'from the boiler to the dome, through the integral pipe a, which extends upward into the dome and has its upper end closed as at a6. The said pipe is provided with oppositely arranged valve seats a7 as, in horizontal alinement with each other, and the valve ai is provided with portions coperating with each of said seats to simultaneously close both of the openings. The valve is provided with .a stem a, which projects upon each side of the dome, and the dome is provided upon each side with openings to permit the passage of the stem, the said openings being threaded as at al, and having arranged therein nuts a, (L12, through which the valve stem passes, a suitable packing being arranged between the stem and the nuts.
lt will be noticed that the opening for receiving the nut L12 is of greater diameter than the valve, so that when the nut is removed, the valve may be entirely withdrawn. A

spring al3 is arranged between the valve and the nut L12 for normally seating the valve, and the end of the valve stem extends into the cab as shown in Fig. l, and is provided with a suitable grip (L15 for convenience in manipulating the same.
Toggle levers al, L17 provided at their point of pivotal connection with the rule joint als, are connected the one au with the valve stem as at al, and the other with a bracket 0,20 on the dome. When the valve is closed, the toggle levers take the angular position shown in Fig. 4, while when the valve is open the levers take the alined position shown in Fig. 3, thus locking the valve in its open position.
The valve is intended to be normally open with the toggle levers in the position shown in Fig. 3, and mechanism is provided for breaking the toggle levers to permit the valve to close in case of accident to the engine, this mechanism comprising a shaft D journaled in a bracket t connected with the flange of the dome, the lever being provided at one end immediately below the toggle lever with an arc-shaped arm d, adapted to engage and break the toggle when the lever is rocked in either direction. The opposite end of the lever is provided with an arm CZ, to which is connected a link d2, which extends through an opening, into the cab and is provided with agrip d3 for convenience in manip ulating the link.
Collars (it, d", are arranged on the link inside and outside of the cab, at a suitable distance from the wall thereof, the said collars being` secured in place by set screws d", whereby their position may be varied.
ln case of accident to the engine such as an overturn or a front or rear collision, the cab being constructed of light material, and for this reason the most vulnerable part of the engine, would first feel the effect of the accident, and would be displaced, thus moving the link by means of the engagement of the cab wall with the cellars, either forwardly or backwaz'dly to break the toggle joint and to release the valve. The releasing of the valve would immediatell,1 shut off the steam from the boiler to the dome.
All of the steam connections lead either from the fountain C, or from the annular 'lla-nge of the dome. The latter is provided with a plurality of connections (L21 for receiving the whistle a and the safety valve a2, and for the ledger-wood and siphon con- -without killing the engine.

The above arrangement of dome, is intended for large locomotives where it is desirable to cut down the height of the parts above the boiler as much as possible. On small locomotives the annular flange could be dispensed with and the whistle and safety valve placed on the top of the dome in the usual manner.
In railroad accidents, many are injured by escaping steam or hot water from the boiler, and the object of the invention is to automatically shut off the steam in case of accident from all parts of the train. The improvement will also be of great utility when it is desired to replace valves or pipes or other parts through which steam passes,
The improvement is also applicable to stationary boilers as well as to locomotives as will be obvious from the description.
I claiml. The combination with the locomotive having a fountain in the cab, of a steam dome in connection therewith, a pipe connecting the dome with the fountain, a pipe integral with the dome and communicating with the boiler, said pipe extending upwardly in the dome, a valve for closing the pipe, a spring acting to normally seat the valve, a stem connected with the valve and extending into the cab, a toggle provided with a rule joint having one of its ends pivoted to the dome and the other to the stem, and adapted to hold the valve in open position when the parts of the toggle are in alinement with each other, and means for breaking the toggle whereby to release the valve, comprising a shaft journaled on the dome, said shaft having at one end an arc-shaped arm for engaging the toggle to break the same when the shaft is oscillated in either direction, a link for oscillating the shaft, said link extending through the wall of the cab, collars adjustable on the link on each side of the cab wall, whereby when the cab is displaced the shaft will be oscillated to release the toggle. s
2, The combination with the locomotive and the fountain, of an auxiliary steam dome in connection with the boiler and communicating therewith, a pipe connecting the dome with the fountain, a spring-actuated valve for normally closing the communication of the dome with the boiler, a stem connected with the valve and extending into the cab, a toggle provided with a rule joint having one of its ends pivoted to the dome and the other to the stem, and adapted to hold the valve in open position when the parts of the toggle are in alinement with each other, and means for breaking the toggle whereby to release the valve, comprising a shaft journaled on the dome, said shaft having at one end an arc-shaped arm for engaging the toggle to break the same when the shaft is oscillated in either direction, a link for oscillating the shaft, said link extending through the wall of the cab, collars adjustable on the link on each side of the cab wall, whereby when the cab is displaced the shaft will be oscillated to release the toggle.
3. The combination with the locomotive and the fountain, of an auxiliary steam dome in connection with the boiler and communicating therewith, a pipe connecting the dome with the fountain, a spring-actuated valve for normally closing the communication of the dome with the boiler, a toggle for retaining the valve in open position, and means for breaking the toggle whereby to release the valve, said means comprising a shaft having an arm for engaging the toggle to break the same when the shaft is oscillated in either direction, a link for oscillating the shaft, said link extendin through the wall of the cab, collars on the ink on each side of the cab wall, whereby when the cab is displaced the shaft will be oscillated to release the toggle.
4. The combination with the locomotive and the fountain, of an auxiliary steam dome in connection with the boiler and communicating therewith, a pipe connecting the dome with the fountain, a spring-actuated valve for normally closing the communication of the dome with the boiler, a toggle for retaining the valve in open position, and means for breaking the toggle whereby to release the valve, said means comprising a shaft having an arm for engaging the toggle to break the same when the shaft is oscillated in either direction, a link for oscillating the shaft, said link having a lost-motion connection with the wall of the cab, whereby when the cab is displaced the shaft will be oscillatedto release the toggle.
5. The combination with the locomotive and the fountain, of an auxiliary steam dome in connection with the boiler and communicating therewith, a pipe connecting the dome with the fountain, a spring-actuated valve for normally closing the communication of the dome with the boiler, a toggle for retaining the valve in open position, and means for breaking the toggle whereby to release the valve, said means com rising a shaft having an arm for engaging t e toggle to break the same when the shaft is oscillated in either direction, and a lost-motion connection between'the shaft and the wall of the cab for oscillating said shaft when the cab is displaced.
6. The combination with the locomotive and the fountain, of an auxiliary steam dome in connection with the boiler and communicating therewith, a pipe connecting the dome with the fountain, a spring-actuated valve for normally closing the communication of the dome with the boiler, a toggle for retaining the valve in open position, and means for breaking the toggle whereby to release the valve, and a lost-motion connection between the cab and the breaking means, whereby a displacement of the cab with respect to the boiler will operate said breaking means.
7. The combination with the locomotive and the fountain, of an auxiliary steam dome in connection with the boiler and communicating therewith, a pipe connecting the dome with the fountain, a springactuated valve for normally closing the communication of the dome with the boiler, a toggle for retaining the valve in open position, and means for breaking the toggle whereby to release the valve.
8. An improvement in locomotives, comprising an auxiliary dome connected directly with the boiler, a steam pipe leading from the dome to the fountain, a valve normally closing the communication between the dome and the boiler, means for locking said valve in open position, and means operated by the displacement of the cab with respect to the boiler for releasing the locking means.
9. ln a locomotive, an auxiliary steam dome communicating with the boiler, spring actuated means for closing said communication, a toggle lever for retaining said closing means in open position, and means whereby displacement of the cab with respect to the boiler will break the toggle.
l0. In a locomotive, an auxiliary steam dome communicating with the boiler, means for closing said communication, and means whereby a displacement of the cab with respect to the boiler will operate the closing means.
