GEORGE P. HOMEIER, OF AKRON, OHIO.
N 0. 893,242. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 14, 1908. Application filed September 6, 1907. Serial No. 391,546. I
To all whom it may concern: snugly fit in the openings 3 and arran ed to Be it known that I, GEORGE P. HOMEIER, be inserted in these openings through the rea citizen of the United States, residing at cess 2. These teeth 5 are fixedly secured in Akron, in the county of Summit and State of i position by means of a detachable strip 6 ar- .5 Ohio, have invented new and useful Iml ranged to fill the recess 2 and be securely reprovements in Combs, of which the followtained therein by the following means: The ing is a specification. ends of. the strip 6 are inclined so that the r This invention relates to improvements in ends of the recess 2 will overlap the same,

The upper surface 25 in which similar reference numerals indicate of the strip 6 is preferably adapted to be like parts in the different figures. flush with the upper surface of the body or- In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective tion 1, thereby constituting a complete ler view of my improved comb Fig. 2 a trans-' for the recess 2, presenting an even and verse sectional view of the same; Fig. 3 a lonsmooth surface on the upper face of the strip 30 gitudinal central section of the same; Fig. 4 6. The teeth are made so that when posia perspective view of a single tooth; and, tioned as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, they will Fig. 5 a plan view of thebody portion of engage in the openings 3 and snugly fit the comb with a portion thereof removed to therein and be fixedly secured against loosebetter illustrate the internal construction ness, thus providing a comb wherein the 35 thereof. 7 teeth, although readily removable at the op In the drawings, the reference numeral 1 tion of the user are so firmly mounted as to indicates the body portion of the comb have all the advantages of a comb in which which is preferably made ofhard rubber, althe teeth are integral with the back. EX- though any other suitable material may be perience has shown that it is frequently de 40 employed. This body portion 1 has in its sirable to place a thin strip of soft elastic subupper surface a recess 2 preferably parallel stance, such as vulcanized rubber, on the with the sides thereof and comparatively floor of the recess 2 in order to cushion the shallow. The lateral edges of thls recess 2 union between the under surface of the strip are preferably inclined, as shown in- Fig. 6 and the rear ends of the teeth 5. This strip 45 2 and the ends are undercut as shown of elastic material is indicated in the draw" best in Fig. 3. From the bottom of the ings by the reference numeral 8 in Fig. 2. recess 2 in the body portion of the comb 1 It will be seen from the foregoing descripare a plurality of regularly-recurring downtion that if at an time one of the teeth is wardlyextending tapering openings 3, broken, all that is necessary to replace the 5 referably diamond shaped in cross-section. same is to remove the holdfast devices 7; Fetween the openings 3 are partitions 4 inspring the strip 6 out of the recess 2; force te'gral with the body portion 1 of the comb t e broken tooth from its position in its rebody. Adapted to be inserted in the openspective opening 3 and replace it by a new ings 3 are a plurality of detachable teeth 5 tooth and then replace the strip and the 55 having sharpened lower ends and tapering comb is at once restoredto its original intact diamond shaped upper ends adapted to perfect condition.
It will be further apparent that if it is desired to clean the comb all the teeth may be removed by an upward pressure on the pointed ends thereof and after washing and cleansing in an antiseptic solution they may be quickly replaced and the comb be thus cleansed of any foreign substance which accumulated thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A comb com rising a back provided with a longitudinal y-extending recess in the rear face thereof, a plurality of openings extending from the floor of said recess downwardly, a plurality of teeth each of which is adapted to be inserted in one of said openings, anda strip positioned in said recess constituting a common abutment for said teeth.
2. A comb com rising a back provided with a longitudinally-extending recess in the rear face thereof, said recess having inclined sides, a lurality of tapering openings extending rom the floor of said recess downwardly, a plurality of teeth each of which is adapted to be inserted in one of said openings, and a strip positioned in said recess constituting an abutment for said teeth.
3. A toilet comb comprising a back provided with a recess in the rear face thereof having inclined lateral edges and a plurality of openings extending from the floor of said recess downwardly, a plurality of teeth mounted in said openings and secured therein by frictional engagement with the sides thereof, and a strip adapted to fill said recess for securing said teeth against dislodgment.
4. A comb comprising a back provided with a recess in the rear face thereof having overhanging end portions and a plurality of openings spaced apart extending from the floor of said recess downwardly, the spaces between said openings constituting partitions integral with the back of said comb, a plurality of teeth frictionally mounted in said opemngs, and a filler strip constituting an abutment for the rear ends of said teeth. provided with inclined ends adapted to be sprung into said recess and be secured in position by the overhanging ends of said. recess.
5. A toilet comb comprising a back provided with a recess in the rear face thereof having overhanging ends and a plurality of tapering openings extending from the floor of said recess downwardly, a plurality of teeth mounted in said openings the spaces between said openings constituting partitions integral with the back of said comb a filler strip adapted to be positioned in said recess provided with inclined end portions arranged to engage under the overhanging ends of said recess, and a holdfast device for securing the medial portion of said strip to the back of said comb.
6. A comb comprising a back provided with a recess in the rear face thereof, said. rccess having inclined lateral sides and overhanging ends and a plurality of spaced apart openings extending from the floor of said. recess downwardly, a plurality of teeth mounted in said openings, a filler strip adapted to constitute an abutment for said teeth. arranged to be sprung into said recess and be secured under the overhanging end portions thereof, and a cushioning strip of elastic material interposed between the floor of said recess and the bottom of said strip.
7. A toilet comb comprising a back provided with a recess in the rear face thereof and a plurality of spaced apart diamondshaped openings extending from the floor of said recess downwardly, a plurality of teeth similar in crosssection to said openings mounted in said openings and a strip constituting an abutment for said teeth positioned in said recess.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my. hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE P. HOMEIER.
