Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES D. MONTA- GUE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Cabinets, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and concise description.
My invention relates to an all sheet metal construction for cabinets having drawers; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a simple, cheap and strong sheet metal drawer construction which is easily manufactured and assembled, and which contributes to the strength and rigidity of the cabinet when the drawers are in the closed position, and in addition, provides strength in the drawer itself when withdrawn from the cabinet; second, to provide novel drawer supports which permit the drawers to slide easily, and'drawer slides, moving within the drawer supports, that sustain the drawers and prevent the same from sagging when partially withdrawn from the cabinet; and third, to provide a supporting shelf for extra heavy drawers which interlocks with the bottom of the drawer to be withdrawn thereby and which forms a firm support for the drawer in the partially withdrawn position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is avertical sectional view of the left-hand portion of a cabinet and drawers having my construction. Fig. 2' is a sectional view' of the depending corner of the drawer and the slide carrier therefor. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the depending corner of the drawer in the first folding operation before the lapped edges have been formed into a roll or scroll, the rollbeing shown in dotted outline. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of one of the depending ends of the shelf support for the lower drawer, showing the shelf, or slide, and the carrier therefor, and a portion of the lower corner of the drawer. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the slide carrier and is shown in position as attached to the upright partition or end of Fig. 6 is a detail of the drawer slide showing the stops that prevent complete withdrawal. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the rear end of the supporting shelf. Fig. 8 is a plan view of said supporting shelf.

The numeral 10 indicates the outer shell, or partition, of the cabinet. are supported in slide carriers, or drawer supe ports 11, which are riveted to the upright partitions of the cabinet, as shown at 12. An important feature of the construction of slide carrier 11 and drawer slide 17, which has the same general profile, is that in the flat or vertical portions thereof they may be of sufficient width to impart rigdity and strength to the construction. Strength in these parts will permit the upright partition 10 to be made of comparatively light weight metal; in certain cases, upright 1.0 may consist merely of two narrow upright bars of metal placed, respectively, at the front and rear portions of the cabinet, parts 11 and 17 being depended upon for strength in their upright flanges to sustain the load of the drawer. The loweredge of slide carrier 11 is turned in a circular roll or tube 13 with a slot 14 on the upper side between the turned edge and the vertical side of the slide carrier.
The lighter drawers of the cabinet are formed in the following manner: The sheet metal side and bottom 15 of the drawer at each lateral or sup ortingcorner is turned downwardly throug slot 14 in slide carriers 11 and turned in a roll 16 which fits smoothly within a drawer slide '17 having the same form as slide carrier 11, and is slidably mounted within said slide carrier 11.
A chief function of, the telescopic tubular rolls in slide carriers 11, drawer slides 17 and. drawer rolls 16 is to provide a strong lateral, or transverse tie, or binding device, for the upright partitions or ends of the sheet metal cabinet. This combination of devices obviates the necessity of providing the cabinet with fixed horizontal partitions, or shelves, and cheapens the construction in a material de ree. The depending drawer corner with roll 16 is formed in the following manner: A strip of sheet metal sufficiently wide to form a drawer bottom and sides, is folded upon itself, as shown at 18 in Fig. 3. This folded portion is thenrolled u on itself by being compressed in a suitab e die which bends the bottom portion of the drawer at right angles to its side, and forces the roll 16 into a compactly rolled scroll bead of exact size to fit within the rolled lower portion of drawer slide 17. This gives great rigidity to the drawer corner. A separate drawer slide 17 is placed unattached withinlslide The drawers cabinet.
Usually the lower drawer 23 of the cabinet is an extra heavy drawer wherein are placed heavy articles which heavily load the drawer and cause the sagging or drooping of the bottom of the drawer and of the front end when withdrawn partially from the case. I prefer a strong support for the lower drawer 23, consisting of a shelf 24 which is slidably attached to the drawer bottom. Shelf 24 is dependingly turned at each end the same as drawer slide 17 and slidably fits within the lower rolled edge of slide carrier 11. It is unnecessary to insert drawer slide 17 in the lower drawer construction, since the shelf 24 performs this office of itself for drawer 23. The shelf 24 is provided near each lateral edge with a series of struck up projections 25, and the drawer bottom near each lower lateral corner has a lengthwise upward bend 28. fitting over projections 25 and keeping the drawer in line as it rests upon shelf 24. Drawer 23 also has a locking projection 26 near the rear of the drawer bottom. Projection 26 has rejecting wings which hold beneath the she f 24. Near the rear end of shelf 24 a T-shaped slot 27 is provided, the cross head of said slot being in the rear, so that the flanged head of projection 26 can be inserted through the crosswise slot and drawn forward, looking beneath shelf 24 at each side of the slot 27. Shelf 24 will be drawn forth with the drawer 23 a sufficient distance to support the same in the withdrawn position.
I claim as new:
1. In sheet metal cabinet construction, a suitable frame, sheet metal supports attached to uprights on said frame each having a vertical flange with a rolled tubular edge and a slot between said flange and rolled edge, and drawers or shelves having integral corners which slidably fit within said tubular edges and slots.
2. In sheet metal cabinet construction, a suitable frame, tubular drawer supports each having a vertical flange for attach ment to said frame at each side of the drawer, said tubular supports having slotted openings adjacent to said vertical flaiiiges, and drawers each having a side and bottom at each end dependingly lapped and rolled in a compact scroll and slid ably mounted in said tubular supports.
3. I11 sheet metal cabinet construction, a suitable frame, tubular drawer supports each having a vertical flange for attachment to said frame at each side of the drawer, said tubular supports having slotted openings adjacent to said vertical flanges, a shelf having depending lateral rolled edges slidably mounted in said tubular supports, and means for attaching a drawer bottom to said shelf to be withrawn thereby.
4. In sheet metal cabinet construction, a suitable frame, tubular drawer supports each having a vertical flange for attachment to said frame at each side of the drawer, said tubular supports having slotted openings adjacent to said vertical flanges, a slotted shelf having depending lateral rolled edges mounted in said tubular supports, and a drawer on said shelf having a projection thereon to engage through said. slotted shelf to be withdrawn thereby.
5. In sheet metal cabinet construction, a frame 10, drawer supports 11. attached to said frame and each having a tubular lower rolled edge 13 with slot 14, an extension support 17 having a rolled edge to slidably fit within said drawer support, a drawer side and bottom 15 folded on themselves and formed in a roll 16, said roll slid ably mounted within drawer slide 17, stops 19 and 20 on said drawer slide, and stop 22 on said drawer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
