CONNECTION FOR SWITCH-POINTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. BossER'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Connections for Switch-Points; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in adjustable connections for switch points in relation to the. stock or main rails of a railway in connection with the operating pipe lines or rods for operating signals actuated simultaneously withthe movement of-the switch points. In all so-called interlocking arrangements of switch points or signals operated in connection with a block system, a precise amount of efiective and ineffective movement is necessary in order to bring switch points'or signals to their exact ositions to accomplish the interlocking o the same.

More specifically, the present invention comprises a housing for the adjusting mechanism, comprising a casing made up of hinged parts whereby access and inspection to the parts Within may bereadily had Without the removal of caps as contemplated in my co-pending application Serial No. 398,996 and in the rovision of a plurality of adjusting and ock nuts contained in a single chamber, the abutment surfaces for the adjustingnuts being integral with the casing.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which cross sectional view, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate two parts of the casing which are hinged together at B and these parts are shown in the drawings as semi-cylindrical and the meeting edges of the two sections or parts are provided with overlapping jambs C for the purpose of efiecting tight and dust proof joints.
D-D designate rods which are pivotally mounted upon studs or pins D upon the section A- and each of said rods is curved, as shown clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and
is designed to swing into a slot in the section A, and a nut E is fitted to each threaded end of the rod D whereby the two sections of the casing may be securely clamped together.
The section A has the lateral extension A which is longitudinally recessed to receive the bar F which is bolted or otherwise securely fastened therein, said bar E being adapted to be connected to the switch points or any other track device. Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be noted that the end of said section A of the casing is provided with apertures A for the reception of the rod I, the end of which is threaded as at I for the reception of the adjusting nuts H and the locking nuts K. One end of the section A of the casing has an extension chamber A to rotect the threaded end of the rod I. Sai section A of the casing has, besides the chambered portion in which the nuts K and H are located, a second chamber or recess L for the rece tion of the annular fiange I upon them I and also the s herical gland N which is centrally aperture and mounted upon the rod I. A portion of the inner surface of the chambered portion L is concaved to conform to the convexed surface of said gland N, and O designates a nut having a threaded circumference engaging threads upon the inner surfaceof the chamber L and has its inner surface concaved corresponding to the curvature of the concaved surface within the section A, thus forming a spherical outlined chamber portion of slightly larger diameter than the gland N. Bythe provision of this s herical gland, the rod I is prevented from blnding. A suitable packing or stuffing Q is interposed between the inner surface of the nut O and said gland N, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing, when taken in connection with the drawings, it will be noted that the essential features of this invention comprise solely means for adjusting the extent of the stroke of the rod and to allow a predetermined amount of effective movement of the rod in order to allow for proper adjustment of the connection with the pipe line for operating signals, etc., it being understood that the purposes of the present invention are to regulate the proximity of switch points to the stock or main rails in both directions and to prevent any foreign substances from interfering with the adjustment. Owing to the provision of the casing, it being made up of two sections as shown, access may be readily had to the parts for adjustment and, when the sections are fastened together, all foreign matter will be prevented from coming in contact with orimpairing any of the parts within.
Vhat I claim to be new is 1. An adjusting connection for operating switch points, comprising a casing made up of two sections hinged together, one of said sections being chambered and having a closed end, a lateral projection upon the chambered section and to which a switch point operating member is fixed, an adjustable operating member mounted within the chambered section of the casing, adjusting nuts mounted upon a threaded portion of said member and adapted to cooperate with the ends of the chamber to limit the adjustment of said memher, as set forth.
2. An adjusting connection for operating switch points, comprising a casing made up of two sections hinged together, one of said sections being chambered and having a closed end, a lateral projection upon the chambered section and to which a switch point operating member is fixed, a movable operating member mounted within said chamber, adjusting nuts upon a threaded portion of said cham her and adapted to cooperate with the ends of the chamber to limit the adjustment of saidmember, one end of the section in which said member is mounted having an auxiliary chamber projecting from the end thereof and inclosing the end of the chamber, as set forth.
3. An adjusting connection for operating switch points, comprising a casing made up of two sections hinged together, one of said sections being chambered and having a closed end, a lateral projection upon the chambered section and to which a switch point operating member is fixed, said chambered section havmg registering apertures in the ends thereof,
an operating member mounted within said apertures, a collar upon the latter and mounted within an auxiliary chamber of the aisiiig, adjusting nuts mounted upon threaded portion of said member, lock nuts upon. said. member, a gland upon the latter, and a nut mounted in one end of the chambered section, as set forth.
4. An adjusting connection for operating switch points, comprising a casing made up of two sections hinged together, one of said. sections being chambered and having a. closed end, a lateral projection upon the chambered section and to which a switch point operating member is fixed, said chambered section having registering apertures in the ends thereof. an operating member mounted within. said apertures, a collar upon the latter and mounted within an auxiliary chamber of the :asing, adjusting nuts mounted upon threaded portion of said member, lock nuts upon said member, a spherical-shaped gland mounted. upon the operating member, a nut having threadedconnection with the end. of the chambered section and having its inner surface concaved conforming to a con awed por tion of the casing and about said gland, as set forth.
5. An adjusting connection for operating switch points, comprising a casing made up of two sections hinged together, the meeting edges of which have overlapping jambs, one of said sections being chambered and having a closed end, a lateral projection upon the chambered section and to which a switch point operating member is fixed, said chambered section having registering apertures in the ends thereof, an operating member mounted within said apertures, a collar upon the latter and mounted within. an auxiliary chamber of the casing, adjusting nuts mounted upon threaded portion. of said member, lock nuts upon said member, a sphericalshaped gland mounted upon the operating member, a nut having threaded connection. with the end of the chambered section. and having its inner surface concaved conforming to a concaved portion of the casing and about said gland, as set forth.
