PACKING-RING. Fon ROTARY PUMPS.
Specication of Letters Patentr .Patented July 14, 1908.
Application mea July 17, 190s. serial No. 326,591-
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that. I, JOHN ALONZO TRAYLOR, a citizen :of the United-Statesof America, re- '.Siding in the city and `county of Denver and iState of Colorado, have invented ajnew and useful Packing-Ring for- Rotary Puinps, of- 'which the followin is a 'speciiicatiom My invention re ates lto--packing the space j between the lining vand the casing of rotaryk pumps,- and the-object of'my'in'vention 1s; to so pack thepump between'its lining and 'its'c-asing vas to stop the circulation of .the .water 1n the space vbetween them. I att-ain.`
this object by the mechanism illustrated in 'iiltheacoompaiiying drawings', in which:
F1 re 1is a vertical longitudinal sec-- tiona view through a rotary pu p showing myimproved 4 packing ring applidd thereto, Fig. 2,- 1s avertical transverse sectional lview through thepump: And 11`ig..,3,is afvertical sectional viewfof a. portion of a pump showing a modiiication 'in theform of the ring.
Similar letters Ofr'eference refer .to similar:
parts throughout the several views.
Referringgtojthe drawings, the numeral 1.,'
designates the outside casing of a rotary pump, and'2 designatesythe lining lof the. Both the pum `and its casing'arel PumP' lprovided wlth suction 1 et apertures 3 and 4 respectively, and vwith outlet :discharge a erture portions 5 and 6 respectively. The 'ning is hollow,"and'within itis v'ournaled a rotary piston,.whic'h I do not i ustrate. The
linin'g iits'loosely `within the casing, it being l centrallywithin a channel 7, formed in the casing. The casing Ais madev in two halves,"
which are bolted together, thus inc'losing the lining. The channel 7, in which the vlining is placed, is made larger vthan the lining; consequently a space is formed between them. "This",s pace' extends lthroughout the lining,
and casing, and the lining is held centrally in the channel yby set-screws andbolts 9. The piston andthe lining and the casing, as cooperating to 'form an operative vwater pumping pump, do not form any part of my invention, my (present invention a plyingionly to roved packing evice for packing the space etween the lining and the cas. ing. Thls'space or channel 7, forms a pas sage for water, which is drawn into 1t and Acirculated throu h the pump and out of 1t a new an im along with the 'scharging water, whichis objectionable, as when vpumping sand' water the sand cuts out the casing; which iysfm'ade.v 'ningis made of of soft cast iron, while the.
following manner: In the mouth of the discharge a]perture ofthe discharge Outlet of the casing, form a circumferential groove 10, preferably using a rectangular groove, which preferably extend into the mouth of the 'chilled cast iron. I accomplish this in the i so l aperture from its end, and I enlarge the adjacent end of the lining, which fits loosely but 4closely the mouth of the casing, at. its mouth, and extends to the end of the discharge apertureof the casing, and in its peripheral surface I alsoform 'a circumferential. groove 11, WhichlpI position `opposite the groove 10 tin thevcasingin the extreme side :and front 'edge Of the lining. If referred,
however, the'packing groove may e placed at a short distance inside of the mouth ofthe necessitating semicircular shaped slots in the casing and lining. In the preferred con- Y struction I preferably use the square packing 13, an'd as the packing recesses extend in Vfrom the face of the casing .and lining, the
packing 13, is .inserted `from the outside of casing and lining, as shown in Fi 3, in which case a round packing 12', 1s pre erably used,
the pump a ter the halves ofthe casing are p bolted' together around the lining, while in the yform shown in Fig. 3, the vpacking is placed around the head of the lining at the time it is laid inone-half of the casing before the other half is placed over it, 'and the halves are bolted together. In the preferred construction, the packing is forced into the packing recesses, and when the flange 14 of the delivery pipe 1,5, is bolted to the flange 16, of the casing, the packing is conned againstaccidental displaceme-n 4My improved packing makes a perfectly wateretight joint around the lining and be-v tween it and its surrounding casing, and' cfliectually stops the circulation of water between, them.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: v
1 A packing device for the linings of rotary pumps, the combination with the casing andVv the lining having a space between them ofv a circumferential 'groove encircling said lining, asimilar groove in the inner periphery of said casing registering with the groove in said lining,` and -a suitable packing material packed lin said grooves.
2'. A packing device for .the liningsof rotary pumps, comprisingl arotary pump casing, and a` rotary` piston said casing, of an enlarged ring portion at the terminal end of the discharge aperture of said lining, a circumferential packing lreceiving groove in the periphery of said ring portion, a flanged terminal discharge aperture on said casing surrounding the discharge ring end of said lining, a packing receiving recess in the inner periphery of said casing registering With the packing recess in said lining, and a packing ring packed in said recesses to close the joint between said lining and said casing.
3. A' packing device for the linings of rotary pumps, the combination with the casing, having on its inner periphery a circumferential packing receiving recess, of the lining having a peripheral recess adapted to receive a packing registering opposite the packing recess of said casing, a space in said casing surrounding said lining and a suitable packing packed in said recesses and arranged to close the joint between them.y
4. In a packing device for the linings of' rotary pumps, the combination of the casing having a channel, a piston lining loosely secured in the channel-of said casing, said casing being provided with a space surrounding said lining a packing recess formed partially around thelining and partially around the inner periphery of said casing in said channel, and a suitable packing packed in said packing recess.
5. In a packing device for packing the linings of rotary pumps ,the combination of the casing, having a channel, a flange at its Water delivering outlet aperture, and a delivery pipe flange secured to the flange of said casing, With the piston lining fitting loosely in the channel of said casing said casing being provided With a space surrounding said piston lining and having a discharge outlet aperture terminating'at the end of said casings flange, a circumferential packing recess in the peripheral edge of said lining, a similar packing recess formed in the inner lperiphery of the entrance of iianged out casing, said recess in each being open to the under side of said delivery pipes flange, and
a suitable packing packed in said recesses of said lining and casing and adapted to be confined therein by said deliverypipe flange.
6. In a pr cking device for tlie linings of rotary pumps, the combination with the casing and the lining said casing beingk provided with a sand-holding space surrounding said lining ofthe packing recesses and the packing operatively arranged/to close the joint between them.
With the packing recess formed partially on said fianged inlet and said ring end from the outside of said fiange and said ring end, the packingin said pa ,king recess, and the deivery pipe fiange bolted to said casing flange and adapted to securely pack and hold said packing in said recess.
In testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of t y'o witnesses.
