Description

GUSTAV SIANNAGEL, OF LIMA, OHIO.
BUNGr-EXTRACTOB.
$pecication of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 190s. I
Appucauon mea my 3, 190e. serial No. 324,629.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUsTAv SPANNAGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, in the county,of Allen and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Im- I provements in Bung-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.v
The object of this invention is to 4provide an instrument to facilitate the removal of bungs from barrels.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and claimed, the` invention, in its practical embodiment, not being confinedto the exact exemplification appearing in the 'accompanying drawings.
In said drawings-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, the staff being partially broken out, and Fig. 2 is a detail in section on a larger scale.
In the lviews l designates the staff. This is conveniently of tubular form and is provided with an enlarged externally threaded .portion la. at its lower end. AThreaded onto the portion lat is a chamber piece 2 which contains an electric-lamp socket device 3 of ordinary or suitable construction.
4 designates an incandescent electric lamp which preferably removably engages the socket 3. Between the socket and the lamp I lace a cushion 5 of rubber or other suit'- ablle material to prevent fracture of the lamp when the device is used.
The lower end of the chamber piece 2 is externally threaded, and onto this I thread a collar 6 having a caging or o en work 7 and a spike 8. The 4lamp is co ned within the caging and thereby protected from injury without materially interfering with the illu-v minating function of the lamp.`
It will be 'observed that, by the construction as described, the lamp lies in a line passing through axes of the staH and spike, and that the shock of the blows given the spike is transmitted through the caging and around the cushioned lamp. By this construction the device can be made of sufficient size and weight tobe eective in the destruction of bungs and at the same time sufliciently slender to pass through and be operative beyond the ordinary bung hole.
The wires 9 for conducting the electricity to the lamp are conveniently passed down through the tubular staff and therefore do not interfere with the proper handling of the instrument.
As the device will have considerabley weight it will be convenient in'practice to provide it With a counterbalancing weight, and the cord 1() to which this weight is to be attached, and a fraction only of which is shown, is passedover a pulley arranged at a suitable height.
In use the spike end of the device is inserted through the bung hole into the barrel and the spike used first to split the bung into pieces, after which the pieces are readily removed through the bung hole by them on the end of the spike. The lamp affords all the necessary light to illuminate the interior of the barrel for properly directing the spike when in the hands of the workman.
j To replace an exhausted lamp it is only necessary to remove the parts 6, 7 and 8,'
imp aling which are shown to be one structure, after which the worn-out lamp can be removed and a new one supplied.
What I claim and desire to secure by Iletters Patent is:
1. An instrument for the removal of bungs from barrels comprising, in combination, a staff, means for attaching an electric lamp to said staff, a lamp, an inclosing caging for protecting the lamp, a spike beyond the caging, the lamp being between the staff and the spike and lying within the line of the axes of the staff and spike, and means for conducting electricity to the lam 2. An instrument for the removal of bungs from barrels comprising, in combination, a staff, means for attaching an electric lamp to said staff, a lamp, a cushioning support for said lamp, an inclosing caging for pro-- 8. An instrument for the removal of bungs through the axes ol the stall and spike, and 10 from barrels comprising, 1n combination, a conductors of electricity7 i'or sind lzunp.
staff having a chamber piece at its lower end, a lamp socket in said chamber piece, an electric lamp detschably connected to said socket, a structure comprising a collar, s caging for the lamp and a spike ada ted to be removably attached to said clliainber piece, the lzunp lying in a line passing In testimony whereof l nl'i'x my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
A. S. GRAHAM, CHAs. GUsTwlLLER.
