To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CnARLEs E. GIERDING, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in F are-Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates primarily to what are known in the art as double fare registers; that is to say, fare registers adapted for the registration separately of cash fares and transfers, or any other two kinds of fares, and for the indication at all times of the kind of fare last registered. The invention may, however, in part be embodied in fare registers or recorders or combined. registers and recorders, hereinafter referred to in common as fare registers, and. also in part in registers or recorders or combined registers and recorders other than fare registers. These latter are herein referred to, in common with fare registers, as registers.
The present improvement as a whole is confined to those fare registers or other registers in which decimal numeral wheels are employed in a trip register, or its equivalent, at least, and preferably in a permanent register or totalizer also, the axes of both sets of wheels being in that case conveniently parallel with each other.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These combinations have been and are preferably embodied in an improved. double fare register, which will be shown as a whole and briefly described to set forth the intended and preferred setting of the present invention.
The leading object of the present invention is to prevent overmovements of the numeral wheels in the registering and resetting operations respectively by means of devices having other essential functions of in'iportance, and thus to simplify the improved registerand adapt the same to resist the severe strains to which fare registers especially are subjected in use.
Other objects of the invention are to provide for locking the respective actuation transmitters of the specific improved double register during the resetting operation; to facilitate assembling and separating the parts especially with reference to attaching and detaching the left-hand actuation indicator of a double register; and to provide Specification of Letters Patent.

for actuating a double fare indicator or the like and for holding the same steadily in its respective positions by mechanical devices of superior simplicity and strength.
Other objects will be set forth in the general description which follows.

Like reference characters refer to like parts in all the figures.
The external characteristics of the specific register represented by the drawings include a round case having sheet-metal drum parts,
1 and 2, suitably connected with each other, and a circular dial plate, 3, exposed to view as in Fig. 1, through the customary front plate of glass. This dial plate has seven i11- dex openings, or sight-holes, two of which, a and b, expose to view the numerals on the respective sets of trip -register numeral wheels, and c, and the respective actuation indicators, (Z and (Z, Fig. 4, etc.; another pair, a and b ex pose to view the numerals on the respective sets of totalizer numeral wheels, 0 and c; the third pair, a and b the respective signs of the fare indicatolyf, and the sev enth opening, a", the respective signs of the direction indicator, g. All the descriptive signs are disappearing only those that are for the time being correct are exposed to view.
The back of the register case is formed by a substantially flat east-iron back plate, 4:, (Fig. 3, etc.) having hanging lugs, h and 7L2, to interact with the customary staples of a suitable operating back (not shown) which for the purposes of the present invention may be of the construction set forth in my specification forming part of United States Letters Patent No. 800566, dated September 26, 1905, or of any known or improved construction.
A pair of vertically movable actuation studs, .5 and 5, protrude through slots, 'L and y', F 3, in the back plate 4 to interact with the pulling devices within the operating back, in customary manner and the customary resetting knob, 75, protrudes at the right-hand side of the register case. Said actuation studs 5 and 5 project from the backs of a pair of actuation slides, Z and Z, guided on the face of the back plate 1, as in Fig. 8, and normally held in the retracted position in which they are shown in Fig. 8 by tensile springs, m and m, stretched between studs, 6 and 7, on the slides and on the back plate 4, respectively.
Complete strokes of the actuation slides Z and Z are insured in customary manner by a pair of dogs, a and n, Fig. 8, pivoted 011 the face of the back plate 4, interacting with ratchet racks, S and 8, formed on the inner edges of the respective slides, and owing to this arrangement a central double-acting spring, 0, connected with the respective dogs, serves to hold both dogs in the normal position of rest in which they are shown in Fig. 8. The dogs n and n and their pivotal supports, together with the interacting portions of the spring 0, are preferably and conveniently guarded by a sheet metal shield, 29, Fig. 8, against obstruction by oil thrown off by the mechanism in front of them. The pulling of both slides, Z and Z, simultaneously is prevented in customary manner by means of a central laterally swinging stop, Fig. 8, interacting with shoulders, 9 and 9, on the respective slides.
Concentric bells, r and 7*, Fig. 8, of different tones, are conveniently attached to the back plate 4 by a central post, 10, common to both, which also forms the pivot of the stop q, and the bell hammers, s and s, and their striking springs, and t, are also conveniently and preferably attached to the back plate 4, as shown in the same figure. The respective bell hammers have tripping levers, a and a, suitably connected therewith and projecting in the path of trip studs, 11 and 11, on the respective slides. This bellmechanism forms no part of the present invention, but is briefly described as a part of the double fare register represented by the drawings. The respective actuation slides Z and Z are further provided, respectively, with forwardly projecting pairs of transmission lugs, 12 and 12, at their outer edges, and the lefthand slide Z, shown detached by Fig. 0, has in addition a like pair of lugs, 13, only smaller as shown, carried by a projection from the inner edge of the slide. Each slide carries also a buffer, 14, at its upper end, to contact with a matching sto p, 'v, on the back plate 1. Said transmission lugs, 12 and 12, of the actuation slides Z and Z interact with crank pins, 15 and 15, forming parts of a pair of rocking actuation transmitters, as they are herein termed, which are shown at w and w in Figs. 4, etc., and are pivoted on a main horizontal shaft, at, common to both of the two sets of registering mechanism, which are mounted side by side on the back plate f as shown in Fig. 4.; said shaft and the remainder of the two sets of mechanism being supported by one pair of frame pieces, 3 and 2, rigidly attached to the back plate by two pairs of screws, 16, 17 and 18, 19, one screw of each pair being inserted from outside, as shown in Fig. 3. By removing these screws the whole of both sets of the registering mechanism apart from the elements attached to the back plate, as in Fig. 8, may be quickly detached when it is necessary to repair or replace any part, and the original assembling of the mechanism is also materially facilitated. A pair of horizontal countershafts, x and cc", in line with each other, are supported next beneath said main shaft and horizontal totalizer shafts rt" and .15, are supported between said frame pieces, 1 and 2, at bottom with the aid of a central support, 20, Figs. 4, 10 and 12, for the inner ends of the countershafts and :0 sustained in position by two horizontal tie rods, 21, and A central link, 23, Figs. 4, 1.0 and 12, connects the totalizer shaft with the lowermost of two horizontal sub-shafts, a. and $7, supported by the frame pieces, 2 and .2, above the trip-register wheels 0 and c, and below the totalizer wheels c and 6, respectively. Said main shaft :1; supports the two sets of trip-register numeral wheels c and c and said totalizer shafts at and 0;" support the numeral wheels 1; and e of the respective totalizers. All the trip -register numeral wheels 0 and. c are loose on said main shaft 00, and are connected with each other by spurgear transfer mechanism hereinafter more particularly described, the'respective parts of which are shown at 24, 25 and 26 in Figs. 4, 5 and 1921. The left-hand. units wheel of the totalizer wheels 6 and e is preferably fast on the totalizer shaft 00*, Fig. 12, the
same being a sleeve shaft the other totalizer wheels are loose on the respective totalizer shafts a and a and motion is trans ferred from wheel to wheel in substantially the same manner as in the trip register. The transfer pinions represented at 25 and like transfer pinions, 25*, Figs. 4, etc., forming part of the totalizer transfer mechanism, are loose on said sub-shafts, a and x respectively.
The actuation transmitters to and. w, being concentric with the trip-register numeral wheels 0 and c, the right-hand transmitter 40 conveniently carries the actuation indicator d of the adjacent trip-register numeral wheels 0. In order to provide for the employment of a left-hand actuation indicator d in the form of a blind confined to the units and tens wheels of the left-hand wheels 0 as shown, or it may be to the units wheel alone, the left-hand indicator d is carried by a cen tral rocking support, M, as shown detached in Fig. 7 a crank pin, 27, at the rear end of said support interacting with said. transmission. lugs 13 at the inner edge of the left-hand actuation slide Z. To facilitate pivoting this indicator support on the main shaft .r, and attaching and detaching the same in assembling and repairing the mechanism, the support is constructed with an open bearing, 28, Fig. 7, closed by a swinging cap piece, 29, which is locked in its closed position by means of a screw, 30, interacting with a pair of lugs formed respectively on the body of the support and on said cap piece. Each of the actuation transmitters to and w is further constructed with a transmission notch, 31, Fig. 14, at a suitable peripheral point, and with peripheral locking surfaces, 32 and 33, on both sides of such notch, concentric with the main shaft. Contiguous to this portion. of each of the actuation. transmitters a pair of combined ratchet wheels and star pinions, 34, are fast on the respective countershafts and a. A spring-pressed working pawl, c, Fig. 15, carried. by each actuation transmitter interacts with the ratchet notches, 35, of the combined ratchet wheel and star pinion. 34 adjacent thereto, and a spring-pressed. detent pawl, b, interacts therewith at another point; the respective detent pawls being supported by the respective frame pieces 2 and 2, as in Figs. 10 and l]. and Figs. 13 and .14.
The star teeth, 35', Fig. 14, of each of the l and turns the combined. ratchet wheels and star pinions 34,
interact with the locking surfaces 32 and 33 of the actuation transmitters w and to before and after each actuation, as in Fig. 14, and during each act of transmission. interact with the notches 31 of the respective actuation transmitters; the interaction first named serving to prevent overmovements of the actuation transmitters and the parts movable therewith in a highly effective manner.
Rotation is transmitted from each of the respective countershafts and r by two trains, 36 and 37 or 36 and 37, of spur gearing, as in F ig. 12. The first of said trains of spur gearing, shown. at 36 or 36, transmits rotation to the units wheel of the corresponding set of trip-register numeral wheels 0 or c, i
and the other train, 37 or 37, transmits rotation simultaneously to the units wheel of the corresponding totalizer wheels e or e. The units wheels of all the several sets of numeral wheels are thus positively geared to said countershafts 03 and x and controlled in common therewith and said. spur-gear transfer mechanism (24, 25, 26) of the respective sets of wheels connects them in like manner with the respective countershafts, so that all the numeral wheels are brought under the same control as to overmovements in the registering operation. Each of the spurgear trains 37 and 37 includes an idle wheel 37 supported by the contiguous side piece y or z.
The fare indicator f, Figs. 1, 4 and 16, is common to the two trains of registering mechanism, having two faces appropriate to the respective trains and bearing in line with them respectively the signs Cash. fares and Transfers, or as the case may be. The indicator f oscillates on the axis of a horizontal rock shaft, 38, and exposes the appropriate sign when a fare of that description is first registered for the time being, and as long as fares of the same kind are registered, and is reversed to expose the other sign when a fare of the other kind is registered. It is moved into its respective positions by a pair of sliding pitmen, 39 and 39, Figs. 4, 10, 11, 13 and 14, pivoted to the respective actua tion transmitters w and w at their upper ends, and provided at theirlower ends with guide slots, 40 and 40, through which the rock shaft 38 extends, and with lugs, 41 and 41, which come into contact with tappet arms, 42 and 42, fast on the respective ends of the rock shaft.
The tappet arms 42 and 42 are shown in Figs. 10 and 14 and in full lines in Fig. 13 in the position corresponding with the sign. Transfer in Figs. 1 and. 4. lVhen a cash fare is next registered the lug 41, Figs. 13 and 14, of the sliding pitman 39 connected with the right-hand actuation transmitter w comes in contact with the tappet arm 42, same downward as in dotted lines in Fig. 13, and the sign Cash is then exposed to view. The operation of the fare indicator f is further illustrated by Figs. 10 and 11, which see. hen the right-hand tappet arm 42 is in said dotted downturned position (Fig. 13) the left-hand tappet arm 42 projects rearward as in Fig. 10, and when the left-hand registering train is again actuated as in Fig. 1.1, the left-hand tappet arm 42 is turned downward as in this figure, and the right-hand tappet arm 42 is turned forward into the path of the corresponding tappet lug 41, as in Fig. 14 and in full lines in Fig. 3. The fare indicator f is held in its respective positions of rest by a tensile spring, 43, Figs. 10 and 11, interacting with a dog, 44, having a V-shaped face which contacts with the respective sides of a V-shaped projection, 45, on the hub of the left-hand tappet arm 42 as shown in these figures respectively; said spring 43 being stretched from a stud pin, 46, on the contiguous side of the left-hand frame piece y.
The outer ends of the main shaft w and countershafts re and in are supported. by bridge pieces, 1 and .2 fixedly attached to the outer sides of the respective frame pieces 3 and z, and the right-hand bridge-piece .2 is provided with the customary locking lug, 47, Figs. 4, 13, 19 and 20, interacting with a notched collar, 48, fast on the main shaft 0;, to render the main shaft a; normally nonrotary, and also to interact with the inner face of said collar 48 to lock said shaft 9; in its resetting position (Fig. 20); the shaft :1; being movable endwise, by means of the resetting knob It, to unlock it for rotation, and to bring the resetting devices within the several trip-register numeral wheels 0 and 0 into contact relation with each other. These devices are, or may be, of the description set forth in my specification forming part of United States Letters Patent No. 800565, dated September 26, 1905, and are exposed to view in Figs. 5 and 6, which see; the same including rigid studs, 49, on the main shaft m, which during the registering operation are located to the left of the respective tripregister numeral wheels 0 and c.
As each fare is rung up on one or the other of the bells r or 1" it is simultaneously registered by the trip-register numeral wheels 0 or c of the appropriate registering train, and simultaneously by the corresponding totalizer wheels 6 or e, as already indicated. In this operation the trip-register units wheel receives its motion from the adjoining spur wheel of the gearing 36 or 36 through the medium of a clutch wheel, 50, Figs. 5 and 6, fixedly attached to such spur wheel, and clutched to the numeral wheel in the manner illustrated by Fig. 5. A tumbler, 51., pivoted to the web of the numeral wheel and a tensile sprmg, 52, stretched to fixed stud within the numeral acted on by a relatively wheel, carries a stud, 53, which interlocks with one of the peripheral notches of the clutch wheel 50 during the registering operation, as in Fig. 5.
Motion is transmitted or transferred in the registering operation from one numeral wheel to the next wheel to the left throughout the register as aforesaid. by spurgear transfer mechanism represented at 24, 25 and 26. In the ease of the trip-register wheels 0 and c this includes transmission attachments 24 herein termed transfer lugs, each, as shown in Fig. 5, in the form of a pair of spur teeth united with each other at their inner ends, the interdental notch corresponding with the customary peripheral notch of the transfer mechanism; such transfer lugs adapting the transfer mechanism. to be utilized as Zero stops in the resetting operation as set forth and claimed in a previous specification forming part of United. States Letters Patent No. 841084, dated January 8, 1907.
In the registering operation, when the notch of each of the lugs 24 is not occupied by one of the star-wheel teeth of the. adjoin.- ing pinion 25, two of said star-wheel teeth contact with the periphery of the customary transfer ring, 24 Fig. 5, which carries the lug 24, to prevent idle movements of the pin ion and of the numeral wheel geared thereto by the adjoining gear 26.
1 hen the main shaft :1 is pulled prelimi nary to the resetting operation, the stud 40, Figs. 5 and 6, at the left of each trip-register numeral wheel 0 or c, is moved into the plane of the correspondii'ig clutch tumbler 5], and in the resetting operation which. follows said stud interacts with the notched inner end of the tumbler, as in Fig. 6 serving first to unclutch the numeral wheel from the corresponding spur wheel, and then to transmit backward rotation from the shaft :1: to the numeral wheel such resetting rotatio n being limited to the backward direction by a spring-pressed dog, 54, Figs. 5 and 6, within. the numeral wheel interacting with the notches of the clutch wheel, 50, as well as by the customary spring-pressed dog, 55, Fig. 13, etc., interacting with peripheral notches in the shaft locking collar 48, Figs. 4, 13, etc., adjacent to the resetting knob 7;. hen the main shaft :t is so pulled by the knob Z1, motio n is furthermore transmitted therefrom by means of a lever, 56, Figs. 4, 13, etc., at the right-hand side of the register, interacting with said locking collar 48, and carrying near the top of the register one of a pair of locking bolts, 57 and 57, shown detached by Figs. 17 and 18, respectively, which interlock with periperal projections, and 58, on the respective actuation transmitters w and w in the resetting position of the main shaft, as in Fig. 20, and have notches, and 59, to clear said projections in the registering position of the main shaft, as in Figs. 4 and 19. Said locking bolts 57 and 57 are connected with each other and with a retracting spring, 60, Figs. 16, etc, which also serves to hold the main'shaft a: in its registering position, by a horizontal slide, 61, best shownin Figs. 19, 20, and 21, which see. Said slide 61 is guided by sleeve portions, 62, embracing a horizontal tie rod, 62 at the top of the register, and interacts with the respective bolts 57 and 57 by means of rigidly depending fingers, 63 and 63, at the respective ends of the slide. The retracting spring 60 is stretched from a pin, 64, at the rigl'it-hand end of the slide 61 to the left-hand frame piece 1], to which it is conveniently attached as shown in Figs. 10 and 11.
The lower edge of the slide 61 is constructed with rigid tooth-like projections, 65, which in the resetting position of the main shaft r and slide 61 (Fig. 20) interlock positively with the teeth. of the trip-register transfer pinio ns 25 and thus adapt these pinions to interact with said transfer lugs 24 carried by the units and tens wheels of the tripregister numeral wheels 0 and c as means for preventing overmovements of these wheels in the resetting operation. The slide 61 is also provided with depending rigid. projections, 66, which contact with the shaft x, as best shown in Fig. 21, to relieve the slide from torsional strain when the lugs 24 contact with the locked pinions 25 at the end of each. resetting operation.
The hundreds wheel of each. set of the tripregister wheels 0 and c is prevent-ed from being turned backward beyond zero in the resetting operation by a s ring-pressed. dog 67 or 67 pivoted on said. s raft a which supports the transfer pinions 25, and interacting with a peripherally notched. disk 68 or 68, as heretofore. Compare Fig. 6 and Fig. 20.
The direction indicator y, Figs. 1 and 4, is reversed. during each. resetting operation to indicate the succeeding trip by means repre sented as a whole in Fig. 1.0, which see. The main. shaft to is provided inside the left-hand frame piece y with a pinion, 69, splined thereto and connected. by an idle wheel, 70, with a spur wheel, 71, of twice its diameter, carrying a crank pin, 72, and. the latter is connected by a pitman, 7 3, with a crank arm, 74, fast on the left-hand end of a rock shaft, 75, which carries the direction indicator.
Suitably apertured sheet-metal frame pieces, 76 and 77, Figs. 4, etc, frame the individual numerals of the trip-register wheels 0 and c, and the totalizer wheels, 0 and 5, respectively, behind the sight holes a, b, a and b in the dial. plate 3 in customary 1 n a nner.
It will be understood. that devices and details of construction not essential to the respective combinations of parts hereinafter claimed may be omitted or changed at will and other like modifications will suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described said improvement, I claim as my invention and desire to patent under this specification:
1. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral. locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl. carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, a countershaft upon which said combined ratchet wheel and pinion is mounted, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, and a set of numeral wheels to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing.
2. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and. a concentric peripheral locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet Wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, a countershaft upon which said combined ratchet wheel and pinion is mounted, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, a set of numeral wheels to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing, and a totalizer simultaneously actuated by said gearing.
3. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl carried by said. transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, horizontal numeralwheel shafts and a countersha'ft parallel therewith, the latter rotated by said combined ratchet wheel and pinion, gearing transmitting rotation from. said countershaft, and a set of numeral wheels mounted on each of said numeral-wheel shafts and to the units wheels of which motion is transmitted by said gearing.
4. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl carried by said transn'iitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, a horizontal main shaft and a horizontal countershaft upon which said transmitter and said combined ratchet wheel and pinion respectively are mounted, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, a set of numeral wheels mounted on said main shaft and to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing, and spur-gear transfer mechanism for transmitting motion from wheel to wheel in the registering operation.
5. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, a horizontal main shaft and a horizontal countershaft upon which said transmitter and said combined ratchet wheel and pinion respectively are mounted, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, a set of numeral wheels mounted on said main shaft and to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing, spur-gear transfer mechanism for transmitting motion from wheel to wheel in the registering operation, and a totalizer simultaneously actuated by said gearing.
6. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, horizontal numeral-wheel shafts and a countershaftparallel therewith, the latter rotated by said combined ratchet wheel and pinion, gearing trz'insmitting rotation from said countershaft, spur-gear transfer mechanism for trz'msmitting motion from wheel to wheel in the registering operation, and a set of numeral wheels mounted on each of said numeral-wheel shafts and to which motion is transmitted by said gearing.
T. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and a pair of concentric peripheral loc-king surfaces adjoining the respective sides of said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surfaces, a countershaft upon which said combined ratchet wheel and pinion is mounted, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, and a set of numeral wheels mounted on said main shaft and to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing.
S. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with peripheral notch and a pair of concentric peripheral locking surfaces adjoining the respective sides of said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surfaces, a countershaft upon which said combined ratchet wheel and pinion is mo unted, gearing transmitting rotation from said. countershaft, a set of numeral wheels mounted on said main shaft and to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing, and a totalizer simultaneously actuated by said gearing.
9. The combination, in a register, of a rocking actuation transmitter constructed with a peripheral notch and a pair of concentric peripheral locking surfaces adjoining the respective sides of said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said. notch and locking surfaces, horizontal numeralwheel shafts and a counter-shaft parallel therewith, the latter rotated by said combined ratchet wheel and pinion, gearing transmitting rotation from said countersha'ft, and a set of numeral wheels mounted on each of said numeral-wheel shafts and to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing.
10. The combinz'ition, in a register, of a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, an actuation slide movable vertically upon said back plate, means for pulling and retracting said slide, a rocking actuation transmitter interacting with said slide and constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral locking surface ad-' joining said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, a horizontal main shaft and a horizontal countershaft mounted in said frame pieces and upon which said transmitter and said combined ratchet wheel and star pinion respectively are mounted, gearing transmit-ting rotation from said countershaft, and a set of numeral wheels mounted on said main shaft to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing.
11. The combination, in a register, of a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendicie lar to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, an actuation slide movable vertically upon said back plate, means for pulling and retracting said slide, a rocking actuation transmitter interacting with. said. slide and constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, a horizontal main shaft and a horizontal countershaft mounted in said frame pieces and upon which said transmitter and said combined ratchet wneel and pinion respectively are mounted, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, a set of numeral wheels mounted on said main shaft to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing, and a totalizer simultaneously actuated by said gearing.
12. The combination, in a register, of a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached. thereto, an actuation slide movable vertically upon said back plate, means for pulling and retracting said slide, a rocking actuation transmitter interacting with said slide and. constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral. locking surface adjoining said notch, a Working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with said pawl and with. said notch and locking surface, horizontal numeral-wheel shafts and. a countershaft parallel therewith, the
latter rotated by said combined ratchet wheel and pinion, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, and a set of numeral wheels mounted on each of said numeral-wheel shafts and to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing. I
13. The combination, in a register, of a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendic'ular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, an actuation slide movable vertically upon said back plate, means for pulling and retracting said slide, a rocking actua tion transmitter interacting with said slide and constructed with a peripheral notch and a concentric peripheral locking surface adjoining said notch, a working pawl carried by said transmitter, a combined ratchet wheel and star pinion interacting with. said pawl and with said notch and locking surface, a horizontal main shaft and a horizontal countershaft mounted in said frame pieces and upon. which said. transmitter and said combined ratchet wheel and pinion respectively are mounted, a spring-pressed. detent pawl in mesh with said ratchet wheel and supported by the adjoining frame piece, gearing transmitting rotation from said countershaft, and a set of numeral wheels mounted on. said main shaft to the units wheel of which motion is transmitted by said gearing.
14. A double register having, in. combination, a back plate common to all, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, a pair of vertically movable actuation slides supported on. said back plate between said frame pieces,
a pair of rocking actuation. transmitters interacting with. the respective slides, a pair of horizontal countershafts which receive intermittent rotation from the respective transmitters, means whereby each countershaft is locked against overmovement at the end of each registering actuation, spur gearing transmitting rotation from the respective co untersh alts, and two sets of numeral wheels mounted in horizontal series between said frame pieces, the units wheel of each set being rotated by the appropriate gearing in the registering operation.
15. A double register having, in combination, a back plate common to all, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, a pair of vertically movable actuation slides supported on said back plate between said frame pieces, a pair of rocking actuation transmitters interacting with said. slides respectively, a pair of horizontal countershafts which receive intermittent rotation from said transmitters respectively, means whereby each counter shaft is locked against overmovement at the end of each registering actuation, spur gearing transmitting rotation from the respective countershafts, two sets of numeral wheels mounted. in horizontal series between said frame pieces, the units wheel of each set being rotated by said. gearing in the registering operation, and spur-gear transfer mechanism for transmitting motion from wheel to wheel in the registering operation.
16. A double register having, in combination, a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, a pair of vertically movable actuation slides supported. on said back plate, a pair of rocking actuation. transmitters interacting with said slides respectively, a pair of horizontal countershafts in line with each other which, receive intern iittent rotation from said transmitters respectively and are mounted at their outer ends in said frame pieces, a pair of tie rods parallel with said countershafts, a central support for said countershafts, sustained by said tie rods, spur gearing transmitting rotation from said countershafts respectively, and two sets of numeral wheels mounted in horizontal series between said frame pieces, the units wheel of eachset being rotated in the registering operation by said gearing.
17. A double register having, in combination, a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, a pair of vertically movable actuation slides supported on said. back plate, a pair of rocking actuation transmitters interacting with said slides respectively, a pair of horizontal countershafts which receive interi'nittent rotation from said transmitters respectively, spur gearing transmitting rotation from said. countershafts, two sets of numeral wheels supported. in horizontal series between said. frame pieces above said countershafts, the units wheel of each set being rotated in the registering operation by the appropriate gearing, and two sets of numeral wheels supported in horizontal series between said frame pieces beneath. said countershafts, the units wheel of each set being simultaneously operated by the appropriate train of said gearing when the corre sponding units wheel of the numeral wheels first named is actuated in the registering operation.
18. A double register having, in combination, a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, a pair of vertically movable actuation slides supported on said back plate, a pair of rocking actuation transmitters, interacting with said slides respectively, a pair of horizontal countershafts in line with each other which receive intermittent rotation from said transmitters respectively, two trains of spur gearing transmitting rotation from each of said shafts, two sets of numeral wheels supported in horizontal series between said frame pieces above said countershafts, the units wheel of each set being rotated in the registering operation by the appropriate train of said gearing, and two sets of numeral wheels supported in horizontal series between said frame pieces beneath said countershafts, the units wheel of each set being simultaneously operated by the appropriate train of said gearing when the corresponding units wheel of the numeral wheels first named is actuated in the registering operation.
19. A double register having, in combination, aback plate, a pair of frame pieces per pendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, a pair of vertically movable actuation slides supported on said back plate, a pair of rocking actuation transmitters interacting with said slides respectively, a pair of horizontal countershafts in line with each other which receive intermittent rotation from said transmitters respectively, two trains of spur gearing transmitting rotation from each of said countershafts, two sets of numeral wheels supported in horizontal series between said frame pieces above said countershafts, the units wheel of each set being rotated in the registering operation by the appropriate train of said gearing, two sets of numeral wheels supported in horizontal series between said frame pieces beneath said countershafts, the units wheel of each set being simultaneously operated by the appropriate train of said gearing when the corresponding units wheel of the muneral wheels first named is actuated in the registering operation, the trains of gearing leading to the subjacent numeral wheels including left-hand train contiguous to the left-hand frame piece, and the units wheel of the lefthand set of said subjacent wheels havinga sleeve shaft by which it is connected with the left-hand gearing 20. A double register having, in combination, a back plate, a pair of frame pieces perpendicular to said back plate and rigidly attached thereto, a pair of vertically movable actuation slides supported on said back plate, a pair of rocking actuation transmit-- ters interacting with said slides respectively, a pair of horizontal countersha'fts in line with each other which receive intermittent rotation from said slides respectively, two trains of spur gearing transmitting rotation from each of said eountershafts, two sets of numeral wheels supported in horizontal series between said framepieces above said countershafts, the units wheel of each set being rotated in the registering operation by the appropriate train of said gearing, two sets of numeral wheels supported. in horizontal series between said frame pieces beneath said counter-shafts, the units wheel of each set being simultaneously operated by the appropriate train of said gearing when the correspanding units wheel of the numeral wheels first named is actuated. in the registering operation, the trains of gearing leading to the subjacent numeral wheels including wheels supported by the respective frame pieces and the units wheel of the left-hand. set of said subjacent wheels having a sleeve shaft by which it is connected. with the lefthand gearing.
21. In a register, the cmnbination with a set of numeral wheels and ahorizontal shaft on which said wheels are loosely mounted. of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation including a rocking actuation transmitter at the left-hand. side of the wheels pivotally mounted on said shaft, an actuation indicator having a rocking support at the right-hand. side of said wheels pivotally mounted on the same shaft and carrying a blind movable momentarily with the units wheel during the first part of each registering actuation and which does not extend to the left-hand wheel, and means for independently actuating said indicator.
22. In aregister, the combination with a set of numeral wheels and a horizontal shaft on which said wheels are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation including an. actuation slide movable vertically behind the same and a rocking actuation transmit ter at the left-hand side of the wheels pivotally mounted on said shaft and interacting with said slide, and an actuation indicator having a rocking support at the right-hand side of the wheels pivotally mounted on the same shaft and interacting with the same slide, said support carrying a blind movable momentarily with the units wheel during the first part of each registering actuation and which does not extend to the left-hand wheel.

In a register, the combination with a set of numeral wheels and a horizontal shaft on which said wheels are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation including an actuation. slide movable vertically behind the same and a rocking actuation transmitter at the left-hand side of the wheels pivotally mounted 011 said shaft and interacting with said slide, and at actuation indicator having a rocking support at the right-hand side of the wheels dctachably pivoted on the same shaft and interacting with the same slide, said. support carrying a blind. movable momentarily with the units wheel during the first part of each registering actuation and which does not extend to the left-hand wheel. a

In a double register, the combination with twosets of numeral wheels mounted side by side and a horizontal shaft on which said wheels are loosely mounted, of means for actuating said wheels in the register ing operation including a pair of rocking actuation transmitters at the right-hand and left-hand sides of said wheels respectively pivotally mounted on said-shaft, an actuationindicator blind carried by the righthand actuation transmitter, and an actuation indicator at the right-hand side of the left-hand set of wheels having a rocking support pivotally mounted on the same shaft, the indicator last named including a blind which in common with the blind first named is movable momentarily with the corresponding units wheel during the respective registering actuations, and which does not extend to the left-hand wheel.
25. In a double register, the combination with two sets of numeral wheels mounted side by side and a horizontal shaft on which said wheels are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation including a pair of actuation slides movable vertically behind said wheels and rocking actuation transmitters at the right hand and left-hand sides of said wheels respectively pivotally mounted on said shaft and interacting with said slides respectively, an actuation indicator blind carried by the right-hand actuation transmitter, and an actuation indicator at the right-hand side of the left-hand set of wheels having a rocking support pivotally mounted on the same shaft and interacting with the left-hand slide, the indicator last named including a blind which in common with the blind first named is movable momentarily with the corresponding units wheel during the respective registering actuations and which does not extend to the left-hand wheel.
26. In a double register, the combination with two sets of numeral wheels mounted side by side and a horizontal shaft on which said wheels are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation including a pair of actuation slides movable vertically behind the wheels and rocking actuation transmitters at the righthand and left-hand sides of said wheels respectively pivotally mounted on said shaft and. interacting with said slides respectively,
an actuation-indicator blind carried by the right hand actuation transmitter, and an actuation indicator at the right-hand side of the left-hand set of wheels having a rocking support detachably pivoted on the same shaft and interacting with the lefthand slide, said support carrying a blind which in commen with the blind first named is movable momentarily with the corresponding units wheel during the first part of each registering actuation and which does not extend to the lefthand wheel of the set..
27. In a double fare register, the combination with two registering trains arranged side by side of means for actuating the same respectively to register two kinds of fares, such means including a pair or rocking parts at the respective sides of the register appropriate to the respective trains, a pair of sliding pitmen pivoted to said parts and each provided with a guide slot and a tappet lug adjacent thereto, a pair of arms at different angles movable alternately across the paths of said lugs respectively andinto planes parallel with said paths, a rock shaft extending through the slots of said pitmen on the re-- spective ends of which said arms are fast, and a fare indicator appropriate to each train carried by said rock shaft.
28. In a double fare register, the combina tion with two registering trains arranged side by side of means for actuating the same respectively to register two kinds of fares, such means including a pair of rocking parts at the respective sides of the register appropriate to the respective trains, a pair of sliding pitmen pivoted to said parts and each provided with a guide slot and a tappet lug adjacent thereto, a pair of arms at different angles movable alternately across the paths of said lugs respectively and into planes parallel with said paths, a rock shaft extending through the slots of said pitmen on the re spective ends of which said arms are fast, and a fare indicator common to the two trains carried by said rock shaft and provided with signs appropriate to the respective trains.

In a double fare register, the combination with two registering trains arranged side by side of means for actuating the same respectively to register two kinds of fares, such means including a pair of rocking actuation transmitters at the respective sides of the register, a pair of countershafts inter-. mittently rotated by said transmitters and spur gearing transmitting rotation from said countershafts appropriate to the respective trains, a pair of sliding pitmen pivoted to said transmitters and each provided with a guide slot and a tappet lug adjacent thereto, a pair of arms at different angles movable alternately across the paths of said lugs respectively and into planes parallel with said paths, a rock shaft extending through the slots of said pitmen on the respective ends of which said arms are fast, and a fare indicator appropriate to each train carried by said roe; shaft.
30. In a double fare register, the combination with two registering trains arranged side by side of means for actuating the same respectively to register two kinds of fares, such means including a pair of rocking parts at the respective sides of the register appropriate to the respective trains, a pair of sliding pitmen pivoted to said parts and each provided with a guide slot and a tappet lug adjacent thereto, a pair of arms at different angles movable alternately across the paths of said lugs respectively and into planes parallel with said paths the hub of one of said arms being provided with detent surfaces, a relatively movable detent having matching surfaces, a spring by which said detent is pressed into holding contact with one or the other of said detent surfaces, a rock shaft extending through the slots of said pitmen on the respective ends of which said arms are fast, and a fare indicator appropriate to each train carried by said rock shaft.

In a double fare register, the combination with two registering trains arranged side by side of means for actuating the same respectively to register two kinds of fares, such means including a pair of rocking parts at the respective sides of the register appropriate to the respective trains, a pair of sliding pitmen pivoted to said parts and each provided with a guide slot and a tappet lug adjacent thereto, a pair of arms at different angles movable alternately across the paths of said lugs respectively and into planes par allel with said paths, the hub of one of said arms being provided with a V-shaped projection forming detent surfaces, a relatively movable detent having a matching V-shaped face, a spring by which said detent is pressed into holding contact with one or the other of said detent surfaces, a rock shaft extending through the slots of said pitmen on the re spective ends of which said arms are fast, and a fare indicator appropriate to each train carried by said rock shaft.

36. In a register, the combination with a set of decimal numeral wheels and an endwise movable and rotatable horizontal shaft on which they are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation including an actuation transmitter at the left-hand. side of the wheels, means for resetting the wheels including a pulling and turning knob attached to the right-hand end of said shaft and transmission devices carried by said. shaft at the left of each wheel and movable into effective position when the shaft is pulled, and means for locking said actuation transmitter at the beginning of each resetting operation including a collar fast on said shaft, a lever interacting with said collar, a horizontal slide moved by said lever and a bolt moved by said slide and interlocked with said actuation transmitter when said shaft is pulled.
37. In a register, the combination with a set of numeral wheels and an endwise movable and rotatable horizontal shaft on which they are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation, including a rocking actuation transmitter at the left-hand side of the wheels having a peripheral locking projection, means for resetting the wheels including a pulling and turning knob attached to the right-hand end of said. shaft and transmission devices carried by said shaft at the left of each wheel and movable into effective position when the shaft is pulled, and means for locking said actuation transmitter at the beginning of each resetting operation including a collar fast on said shaft, a lever interacting with said collar, a horizontal slide moved by said lever and a bolt moved by said. slide and interlocked with said locking projection when said shaft is pulled.
38. In a register, the combination with a set of decimal numeral wheels, right-hand. and left-hand frame pieces between which said wheels are mounted and an endwise movable and rotatable horizontal shaft on which said wheels are loose, of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation including an actuation transmitter at the left-hand. side of the wheels, means for resetting the wheels including a pulling and turning knob attached to the right-hand end of said. shaft and transmission devices carried by said shaft at the left of each wheel and movable into effective position when the shaft is pulled, means for locking said actuation transmitter at the beginning of each resetting operation including a collar fast on said shaft, a lever interacting with said collar, a horizontal slide moved by said lever and. a bolt moved by said slide and interlocked with said. actuation transmitter when said. shaft is pulled, and a tensile retracting spring stretched from said slide to the left hand frame piece.
39. In a double register, the combination with two sets of decimal numeral wheels arranged. side by side and an endwise movable and rotatable horizontal shaft on which they are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation, including actuation transmitters at the righthand and left-hand sides of the respective sets, means for resetting the wheels including a pulling and turning knob attached to the right-hand end of said shaft and transmission devices carried by said shaft at the left of each wheel and movable into effective position when theshaft is pulled, a right-hand locking bolt connecting said lever and said slide, and a left-hand'bolt moved by said slide, said bolts being simultaneously interlocked with the respective actuation transmitters when said shaft is pulled.
40. In a double register, the combination with two sets of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side and an endwise movable and rotatable horizontal shaft on which they are loosely mounted of means for actuating said wheels in the registering operation, including rocking actuation transmitters pivotally mounted upon said shaft at the righthand and left-hand sides of the respective sets and constructed with peripheral locking projections, means for resetting the wheels including a pulling andv turning knob attached to the right-hand end of said. shaft and transmission devices carried by said shaft at the left of each wheel and movable into effective position when the shaft is pulled, and means for locking said actuation .transmitters at the beginning of each resetting operation including a collar fast on said shaft, a lever interacting with said collar, a horizontal slide moved by said lever, a righthand locking bolt connecting said lever and said slide and a left-hand bolt moved by said slide, said bolts being simultaneously interlocked with said locking projections of the respective actuation transmitters when said shaft is pulled.

A register having, in combination, a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side bv side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting such motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel including a transfer lug carried by the lefthand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached at the right-hand side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with said pinion when said units wheel is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a slide vent oyermovement of the units wheel during such resetting operation.
44. A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transthe tens wheel including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached to the righthand side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a slide, movable in a path parallel to the axis of said pinion and having a projection interacting with said pinion, to lock the same during each resetting operation, whereby said pinion is adapted to interact with said transfer lug to prevent overmovement of the units wheel in such resetting operation.
45. A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for trans- .mitting such motion from said. units wheel to the tens wheel including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of saidv units wheel, a transfer pinion. adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached to the right hand side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, a rod parallel to the axis of said pinion, and a slide having a guide sleeve embracing said rod and a projection interacting with the teeth of said pinion to lock the same during such resetting operation.

A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting such motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel, including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said, pinion attached to the righthand side of said tens wheel, said. transfer lug being adapted to contact with said, pinion when the nume 'alavheel carrying the same is turned. in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of I them as have been moved in the registering adapted to interlock with said pinion to pre- 1 operation to reset them, a rod parallel to the mitting such motion. from said units wheel to axis of said pinions, a slide having a guide sleeve embracing said. rod and a projection interacting with the teeth of said. pinion, and means whereby said slide is kept from swinging on said rod.

A register having a series of decimal .numeral wheels arranged. side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting such motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel including a transfer lug carried by the left-h and side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached to the right hand. of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been. moved in the registering operation to reset them, a slide movable parallel to the axis of said pinion and having a projection. interacting with said pinion to lock the same during each resetting operation, and a tensile spring interacting with said. slide, stretched parallel therewith and serving to keep said. projection out of contact with said pinion during the registering peration.
48. A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel, including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion. .in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh witl'i. said pinion attached to the right-hand side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them. as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a locking device normally out of contact with said pinion movable into engagement therewith to lock the same during such resetting operation.
49. A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel, including a transfer lug carried by the lefthand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to interact with said transfer ing and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached to the right-hand side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with. the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a slide adapted to interact with said pinion to lock the same during such resetting operation.
50. A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged. side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for trans mitting motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel, including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached to the right-hand side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with the spur wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward. the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a slide movable in a path parallel to the axis of said pinion and having a projection interacting with said pinion to lock the same during the resetting operation.
51. A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel, including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to interact with said. transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with. said pinion attached to the right hand side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned .in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, a rod parallel to the axis of said pinion and a slide having a guide sleeve embracing said rod and a projection interacting with the teeth of said pinion to lock the same during such resetting operation.
52. A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting motion from said units wheel to the tens wheel, including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached to the right-halal side of said tens wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, a rod parallel to the axis of said pinion, a slide having a guide sleeve embracing said rod and projection interacting with the teeth of said pinion to lock the same during such resetting operation, and means whereby said slide is kept from swinging on said rod.
A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for actuating the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting motion from said, units wheel to the tens wheel, including a transfer lug carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to interact with said transfer lug and a spur gear in constant mesh with said pinion attached to the right-hand side of said units wheel, said transfer lug being adapted to contact with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning back ward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, a slide movable parallel to the axis of said pinion and having a projection interacting with the teeth of said pinion to lock the same during such resetting operation, and a tensile spring interacting with said slide stretched parallel therewith and serving to keep said projection out of contact with said pinion during the registering operation.
A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for turning the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting such motion from wheel to wheel including a suitably spaced pair of spur teeth carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to mesh by its star-wheel teeth with the interdental space of said pair of teeth and a spur gear in constant mesh with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion carried by the right-hand side of the tens wheel, said pair of teeth being adapted to contact with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a locking device normally out of contact with said pinion movable into engagement therewith to lock the same during such resetting operation.

A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for turning the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting such motion from wheel to wheel including a suitably spaced pair of spur teeth carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to mesh by its star-wheel teeth with the interdental space of said pair of teeth and a spur gear in constant mesh with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion carried by the right-hand side of the tens wheel, said pair of teeth being adapted to contact with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a slide adapted to interlock with said pinion during such resetting operation.

A register having a series of decimal numeral wheels arranged side by side, means for turning the units wheel step by step in the registering operation, means for transmitting such motion from wheel. to wheel including a suitably spaced pair of spur teeth carried by the left-hand side of said units wheel, a transfer pinion in the form of a small spur wheel and a star wheel of the same diameter side by side adapted to mesh by its star-wheel. teeth with the interdental space of said pair of teeth and a spur gear in constant mesh with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion carried by the right hand side of the tens wheel, said pair of teeth being adapted to contact with the spur-wheel teeth of said pinion when the numeral wheel carrying the same is turned in either direction, means for turning backward the numeral wheels or such of them as have been moved in the registering operation to reset them, and a slide movable in a path parallel to the axis of said pinion and having a projection interacting with said pinion to lock the same during such resetting operation.
