To all whom 1' 2 may concern:
Be it known-that 1, GlUsEPPE Rocco, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Trieste, Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Acetylene-Generators; and I do hereby declare t-he'following to be a full, clear. and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to acetylene lighting apparatus and more particularly to intermittent light apparatus for sea lights.
in the apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention calcium carbid is automatically introduced in predetermined quantities'into water whenever the quantity of acetylene in the gasholder is reduced to a predetermined *minimum. The gas flows from the gasholder through a wet gas meter into two tubes, one of which is provided with an adjustable throttling device and the other witlr a valve or equivalent device opening and closing alternately at and for predetermined intervals, the two tubes lead to a pipe supplying the burners of the intermittent sea light. The throttling device in one of the tubes permits to flow to the burners a quantity of gas which is just sufficient to kee burning small flames which are not visiile at a greater distance, whereas the valve or equivalent closing device in the other tube. when 0 en, permitsso large a quantity of gas to ow'to the burners that the flames are greatly increased and thereforethe light becomes very intense and visible at great distances. In this way an intermittent light is obtained. When owing to an abundant-production of gas the gas holder bell is raised beyond a predetermined limit it opens an escape device, for instance a cock 20 in a pipe 21 communicating with the gas chamber 6, whereupon the excess of gas escapes into the atmosphere. When, however, owing to the consumption of gas the gas holder bell sinks below a predetermined limit and consequently the outer end of the lever 17 connected to the cord or chain 15 is raised and thereby the rod 29' is lowered and the slide 22 is brought into the position shown in Fig. 3, the upper full portion 34 of the slide 22 comes opposite the open end of the' funnel 28 thus stopping the flow of carbid from the said funnel to theinteriorof the slide. At the same time the lugs 31 comev into the enlarged or curved portion 35 of the slots 32-thereby ermitting the gate or valve 30 to be opened by the combined action of the carbid Within The carbid is then discharged into the water contained in the generator and acetylene is evolved and flows to the gas holder. The gas holder bell is raised, the lever l7 being weighted raises the slide 22 into the position shown in Fi 2 and the lugs 31 slide along the curved left hand edge 35 of the slots 32 whereby the gate or valve 30 is closed-against the action of the spring 33. The slide is then again charged with carbid as above described and is ready for the next discharge. I,
If it 'is desired to altogether stop the production of gas it is only necessary to lock the rod 29 in its uppermost position by a suitable dog 36 as shown in Fig. 1, the said dog 36 being pivoted on a vertical axis in the frame of the apparatus and adapted to engage below a shoulder on the rod 29.
In order that the gate or valve 30 may be tightly held to the rear wall of the slide when the latter is in its upermost osition weighted arms 36 may be provide which are pivoted to the casing 23 and whichin the.
' uppermost position of the slide bears against the lugs 31 thereby holding them against the rear Wall of the slide.
i As already described the gas passes from the gas holder through the purifier Sand pipe 9 and gas meter 10 to two tubes-11, 12, both of which lead to the tube 13 going-to the burners 14. On'of these tubes 11 contains a throttling device indicated at 11 and of any known or preferred construction which permits only so small a quantity of gas to pass through the tube 11 as is sufficient for kee ing burning small flames that are not visib e at larger distances. The other tube 12 contains an alternately opening and shutting organ such as a valve, which'when open permits to pass through the tube 12 a quantity of gas sufficient for maintaining large flames vislble at great distances.
By properly adjusting the intervals between the opening and shutting periods of the -'said closing organ and by properly adj usting the duration of the opening and shut-- ting periods themselves an intermittent light of-any desired character may be obtained.

In acetylene lighting apparatus the combination of an acetylene generator a casing fixed to such generator, a carbid funnel, a port leading from such carbid funnel to the said casing, a hollow slide ada ted to recip-- rocate in such casing, a gas ho der having a reciprocating bell, means operated by such bell and ada' ted to o erate the said slide, an opening in t e side 0 the slide, such 0 ening being adapted to coincide with the said port in one extreme position of. the slide, an opening at the bottom of the slide, a cover adapted to close such opening in the bottom, of the slide, a spring secured to the slide and adapt ed to open the cover, curved slots in the said casing and lateral lugs on said cover adapted LOO 2.
