Description
nl @time @met sIMEoN BROWN,
OF UTICA, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 89,284, dated April 27, 1869.
IMPROVED ADJUSTABLE GATE FOR GRAIN-ELEVATORS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all fivhom 'it may concern Be it known that I, SIMnoN BROWN, of Utica, in the county of Licking, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain-Elevators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
l 'lhe nature of my invention consists in attaching an adj nstable feed-gate to grain-elevators, in such a inanuer as to effectually prevent choking, and at the same time to regulate the quantity of grain fed to the elevator.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawing- A represents the outside frame, or casing, of an elevator, With the top removed, s'o as to show the upper drum.D, endless 'band B, andfbuckets b, which form the elevating device.
C is a lever, pivoted at one lend, to a bracket, c, and Working easily in a forked guide, c', which prevents lateral motion of the lever.
S is a spiral spring, the tendency of which is to draw the lever'O downward.
The free end of the lever O is connected by a rod, It, to another lever, E, one end of which is pivoted at eto the casing A, and at the other end is attached the regulating feed-gate G, which slides in a groove formed in thepartition between the casing A and the hopper H, at the bottom of which is an aperture, F, through which the grain passes to the inside of the casing, where it is elevated by the buckets b, which aperture Fis closed, or partially closed, by the gate G, when not in motion.
The operation is as follows:
B and buckets b, a crank-pin, p, on the drum-shaft ll, raises the free end of the lever.C,vwhich motion, by means of rod R and lever E, raises the gate G, and keeps it upuntil tliepin p has passed the end of the lever G, when the action of the spring S upon the lever C, rod-R, and lever E, will lower the gate Gr, and close, or partially close the aperture F.
The quantity of grain passing through the aperture F may be regulated by adjusting the rod R to the different holes in the lever E.
The reciprocating motion of the gate G, and the consequent alternate opening and closing of the aperture F, eiectually prevent all choking and clogging ofthe material passing to the elevator.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by 'L ent, is-
The lever O, spring S, and crank-pin p, or its equivaient, in combination with the rod It, lever E, gate G, hopper H, and elevator B, substantially as shown and described.
