JOINT-MAKING PACKING DEVICE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July '7, 1908.
Application filed July 8, 1907. Serial No. 382,764.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH SEEBECK, manufacturer, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Geestemi'lnde, German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Joint-Making Packing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a j oint-makin packing device, more particularly adapted or use with steam drums having a slidin closure, of the'kind described in my Unite States application Ser. No. 355,886, filed on 5th February 1907.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which one form of con struction of the new device is shown a plied to a steam drum furnished with a liding cover.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the inlet-pipe of the device, with adjacent portions of the drum and its cover. Fig. 2 1s a side elevation of the parts, the cover bein omitted.
ractical trials with various packings have provedthat forclosures of the kind in question a simple leaden pipe, without the use of rubber, is the best and cheapest packing medium and the one which can be most readily renewed.
The urpose of my invention is to provide means or maintaining such a tubular leaden packing intact.
In the drawing, 1 is a steam drum, 2 the sliding cover thereof, 3 the grooved rim of the latter, 4 the tubular leaden packing, and .5 the inlet-pipe for admission of the pressureagent into the leaden pipe.
In order that the lead pipewhich is relatively thickmay be sulllciently firmly forced against the faces of the drum and cover to afl'ord a thoroughly ti ht joint, there must, as I have ascertained byexpert ments, be a pressure of some 70 or 80 atmospheres in.the pi e. Such a pressure, however, would infa ibly'burst or break oil the inlet-pi e 5 and drive it out of the stullingbox. 0 obviate this danger, I provide a metal tube 6, and solder or otherwise suitably fix the inlet-pipe 5 therein. The tube 6 is secured to the flange 9 by means of a tubular threaded connection 7 and screws 8. In this manner the inlet-pi )e is firmly held in position and can not be etrimentally affected by the high pressure, which only tends to render the joint more effective.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A packing device for steam drums and other receptacles, oomprisin a leaden pipe for a pressure agent, a metal tube in \v rich is fixed the leaden tubular inlet' for the pressure agent, an externally threaded tubular connectingiece passed overthe tube and adapted to lle screwed on to the receptacle, and means for holding the connecting-piece and the metal tube together.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 24th day of June, 1907, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRIEDRICH SEEB ECK.
