My invention relates to controllers for "electric motors, and especially to arrangements for preventing flashlng at the contacts of railway controllers.

ln one aspect my invention comprises the combination with a motor controller, of a magnetically o erated switch arranged to be opened when t e controller is moved back ward into its first operative position.
In a more specific aspect my invention comprises the combination of a motor controller, a-magnetically operated switch biased toward closed position and normally locked in such position, a magnet which. unlocks said switch when the controller is in its second operative position, and a second magnet which tends to open said switch when the controller is in the first operative position.

- The controller shown in this figure may be of any desired type, but is here shown as a seriesparallel controller for two electric motors A and B. The controller drum 15 has operative positions 1 to 13 inclusive and is provided with contact segments cooperating with stationary contact fingers 16 to 28 in- As the controller is moved between tor circuit is varied with the motors connccted in series. The contact finger 16 is connected to the movable member 29 of a magnetically operated switch S. The stationary member 30 of this switch is connected to the trolley or other collecting device 31 through a blowout coil 32.. The movable member 29 is pivoted at 38, is biased toward engagement'with the stationary member 30 by a spring 33, and is normally locked in such osit1on by a springp'ressed latch 34. The atch 3 l'is moved to unlock the movable member 2% when a mag net 35 is energized, this magnet being con' nected in series between contact finger 18 and the resistance R. There is another magnet 36 of the solenoid type which is connected in series between contact finger 17 and resistance R. The solenoid 36 tends to 0 en the switch S whenever it is energized, ut can only do so if the movable member 29 of said switch is not locked by the latch 34. The switch S is normally closed. Adash- 0t or other time-limit device 37 retards the c osing movement of said switch, but allows a free opening movement thereof.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the controller is moved into its first operative position the motor circuit is completed from trolley 31, through blowout coil 32, switch S, contact finger 16, the proper contacts of the controlling drum, contact finger 17, solenoid 36,-the whole of resistance B, and the motors A and B to' ground. In this position the solenoid 36 tends to open the switch S but is prev eife d from doing so by the latch 34. When the controller is moved into its second operative position, the solenoid 36 and the lowest section of resistance R are shunted by the engagement of contact finger 18 and its co- 0 crating contact segment .on the drum.

Many modifications of the particular system of connections herein. set forth be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and all these obvious modifications aim to cover in the appended claims.
What I claim as new is z in combination, a motor controller, and a magnetically operated switch through which the motor current is always suoplied, said switch being so connected and a nged that it is opened when the controller is moved backward into its first operative position.

In combination, a motor controller, a magnetically operated switch, and connections between the switch and the controller so arranged that the switch opened when the controller is moved backward to its first operative position but is unmoved when the controller reaches such position in its forward movement.

In combination, a motor controller, an electrically operated switch through which the full motor current is supplied when the controller is in a certain o erative-position, and connections whereby tli e motor circuit is always-made at the controller but is broken at the switch when the controller in its backward movement reaches such position.
