Description

N. PEIERS, PnoTmuTnoamPHEn. WASHINGTON. u. c.
dimmi tate @anni idtire,
SENECA M. RTCHARDSON, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
` Leners Patent No. 89,245, camz April 2o, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN TENONING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to n -these Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
county of Worcester, and Commonwealth ofMassaJ ehusetts, have invented certain new and`useful Improvements in Tenoning-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a front view of my improved tenoning-machine;
Figure 2 represents a plan view of said machine; and
Figure 3 represents a view of the left-hand end of the same.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
The nature of my invention consists- First, in the combination, with the elevating-frame of an adjustable frame for supporting the arbor or journal, ofthe upper cutter-head, as and for the purposes hereinafter explained.
Second, in the combination, with the main frame of a tenoning-maehine, of a peculiarly constructed elevating-trame, for supporting the upper cutter-head, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, the part marked A is the main frame;
B, the driving-shaft; and
C, the driving-pulley.
1) is the lower cutter-head, and
E, the upper cutter-head, both of which are provided with knives and mounted on arbors a and b in the usual manner.
The arbor a, of the lower cutter-headpD is snppolted by adjustable bearings, c,upon the main frame A, while the arbor b of the upper cutter-head E is supported by socket or other bearings, f f, arranged in the hangers d cl, that project downward from the adjustable frame F, as indicated in the drawings.
The adjustable frame F is tted in recesses at the under side of the elevating frame G, and is provided with slot e, through 'which pass screws or bolts, g g, by means of which it is secured to the elevatingframe G.
The frame F is turned up at one end, h, to form a bearing to receive the neck or smooth part of the regulating-screw H, the end of said screw working in the side of the elevating-frame G.
Screw H is for the purpose of adjusting the frame y F longitudinally, which can be effected in a very convenient manner by simply loosening the screws or bolts g g, and then turning' the adjusting-screw H to move the frame F in or out, as the case may be, to bring the cutter-head E into the proper relativeposition as respects the lower cutter l). v
Screw H is provided with a collar, m, which bears against the projection h and insures the movement of the frame F.
The ordinaly mode of supporting the arbor l) of the cutter-head E has been by securing its bearings independent of each other tothe under side of the elevating-frame G, and with such an arrangement it is very diiicult to adjust the cutter-head E to the proper position, each of the bearings requiring separate adjustment.
There is great liability of throwing the first adjusted out of place while adjusting the other. Besides, it is difieult with such an arrangement to secure the exact adjustment without great inconvenienee, the vbearings requiring to be hammered or' rapped back and forth several times before any degrec of accuracy can be obtained, whereas, by my improvement, frame F can be adjusted back and forth with precision, as before explained.
It will thus be seen that my improved machine is capable of producing more accurate and perfect Work than the machines constructed in the ordinary manner.
The elevating-frame G, as heretofore constructed, has been of the same width at the front as; at the back, which, in practice, has been found to interfere. very much with the proper operation of the machine by the attendant, since the front right-hand corner of the frame interfered with him while adjusting the homing-lever 1,by which the work is held upon the sliding-table K, and also obstructed a direct view of the cutter-heads.
The left-hand corner of the frame also, interfered with the ready and convenient adj ustment of the binder of the driving-belt M.
All of the foregoing objections are overcome and obviated by my improved elevating-frame, the front of which is made in the form shown in fig. 2.
The sides N N are curved .in-in front of the frame F, and then project forward vparallel to each other.
In addition to the advantages above enumerated, the frame is rendered `stronger and less liable to spring or tremblein the centre, where frame F is supported.
A detailed description of the entire machine is not deemed necessary, as most of the parts, and the operation of the same, do not differ materially from machines in common use. a
Having described my improved tenoning-machine,
What I claim therein as new, and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of frame F with frame G, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with frames F and G, of the adjusting-screw H, said parts being constructed and arranged in relation to eachother, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The elevating-frame G, constructed as described,
and as shown in the accompanying drawings,for the purposes stated.
