Be it known that I, CARL E. R. CnaIs'rEN- SEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle and Jar Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bottle and jar stoppers having particular reference to a device that may be readily placed in the mouth of a bottle or other eontainer, and means whereby said stopper may be extracted from same without the necessity of using a mechanical extractor.
In the following is described in connection with the accompanying drawings one em bodiment of the invention the features there of being more particularly pointed out hereinafter in the claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the neck of a bottle illustrating the invention as applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the metallic part ofthe stopper illustrating the invention before it is compressed; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the stopper illustrating in connection therewith the extracting means, and Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional view thereof illustrating the position the extracting means will assume when said stopper is in a position ready to be withdrawn from the neck of a bottle or other container.
Similar numerals of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates the neck of a bottle provided at its upper end with a circumferential bead 2 having formed in the enlarged portion 3 thereof a rece )tion groove 4. Said reception groove 4 as formed at its upper end a bearing surface or cavity 5 adapted to receive the top of the stopper 6, and at its lower end a seat 7 adapted to receive the cushion or packing 8 of said stopper 6.
The body portion 11 of stopper 6 when compressed into a completed form cornprises an inverted circumferential reception hood 12 adapted to receive packing 8 which is in turn mounted on the seat or reception surface 7 formed in the neck of the bottle 1. Grippers 9 are bent upwardly forming a hook adapted to receive wire 14 of the stopper extracting means.
l Vire 14 is wound around the outer part of stopper 6 and is held in place by means of hooks 13 formed thereon by the turning down of the ends of grippers 9, and is then brought through between the enlarged grippers 10 and wound about the inner part of said stopper 6 forming at that point a loop 15, the respective ends of said wire 14 being fastened together in the form of a knot 16 adjacent to said enlarged grippers 10. Grippers 9, described above as being bent downwardly around said wire 14, are of such length that every fourth gripper, for exam ple, entirely surrounds said wire 14, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings at 17, whereas the other grippers partially surround said wire 14 as at 18. The object of the grippers 17, which entirely surround wire 14, is to provide means that will permit wire 14 to be so held that it will facilitate the extracting of the stopper from a bottle or any other container, whereas the grippers 9, described as partially surrounding said wire 14, as at 18, provide means whereby wire 14 is easily held in position under the hooks formed by the turned over grippers, but can be easily ripped out when stopper is removed.
In applying a stopper of the character described to a bottle, or like container, it is essential that the same be put under a high pressure which causes the flexible parts, including packing 8 and grippers 9, to engage the holding surfaces 5 and 7 in the reception groove 4 and compress packing 8 between the stopper and surface 7. -l/Vhen in this position it will be seen that the stopper will become an air tight closing means for any kind of container.
In withdrawing or extracting the stopper 6 from a container mouth loop is adjusted to the position illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings and gradually drawn in a diagonal direction against the resistance of grippers 9, bearing against cavity 5 in the beading 2 of bottle 1. The pressure on grippers 9 caused by the continued pulling of loop 15 will cause enlarged grippers 10, which entirely surround wire 14, to be drawn inwardly and u )wardly, and as soon as said grippers 10 are displaced or Withdrawn from their contacting position With cavity 5, the remainder of the grippers 9, including the ones partially surroundin and those entirely surrounding wire 14, wil immediately become disengaged and permit the stopper to be lifted from its seat in the container.
It is obvious that the device as herein disclosed may be readily applied to a container of any description and in extracting the same obviate all necessity of using a mechanical extractor.
It is further obvious that the device may be Widely varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A container provided with a mouth having a reception groove forming an upper shoulder and a lower receptionseat, in combination with a stopper having formed thereon a plurality of grippers adapted to engage said shoulder, a packing, an annular seat on said stopper adapted to receive said packing and engage the reception seat in said container mouth, a wire carried by said grippers, and a loop formed in said wire adapted to rest within said stopper.
2. A container provided with a mouthhaving a reception groove forming an upper shoulder and a lower receptlon seat, 1n combination with a stopper having formed on 1ts under body portion an annular seat, a packmg mounted in said seat, a plurality of grippers on the sides of said stopper, a wire carried by said grippers, and aloop in said wire adapted to rest within the sides of said stopper.
3. A container provided with amouthhaving a reception groove forming an upper shoulder and a lower reception seat, in combination with a stopper having formed on its sides thereof a plurality of resilient grippers adapted to engage said shoulder, a packing, an annular seat on said stopper adapted to receive said packing and engage said reception seat, a wire carried by said grippers, and means formed in said wire adapted to facilitate the extraction of said stopper from said container mouth.
