FIRE-DOOR CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 19087 T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. OALEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, Hartford county, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Door Construction, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates particularly to improvements in fire doors, the object being to provide a construction whereby the passage for the lock will be effectively protected from flame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a portion of a door stile, showing my invention as applied; Fig. 2 is a view of the inside of the clenching memher, in this instance being in the form of an escutcheon plate Fig. 3 is an edge view of the mortise lining; Fig. 4 is a detail view.
A represents the door stile, through which a passage is cut from one face to the other. This door A is provided with a fire resistant lining A on one or both faces, save where said passage is.
B represents one of the clamping members, in this instance a lock, arranged to be applied to one side of the door. (3 represents another clamping member, in this instance an escutcheon plate, arranged to be applied to the opposite side of the door.
D represents a metal plate lining arranged to cover and protect the wood wall of the said passage between the two fire resistant face coverings A A. The lining D is made up of an outline to correspond with the passage through the door, and so as to snugly 'lit the wall of the same. The lining piece D, before application, should preferably have the roll or shoulder D at one edge only. Be fore the clamping members B and O are applied to the door, this lining D is slid through the passage therein until the shoulder or roll .D abuts against the door stile, as shown in Fig. 1. The clamping members are provided with any suitable take-up couplings, for example, the couplings E E are each con structed to engage both clamping members. The engagement of one end of each coupling E with one of said members (for example B) is screw-threaded so that by means of a suitable tool said parts E E may be screwed up tightly so as to draw the parts B-C into tight clamping engagement with the door stile. In the back of one of the members (for example C) a suitable die-shaped recess is formed, which is of an outline corresponding to the outline of the lining 1). When the die portion engages the unrolled edge of the lining, a further drawing up of the clamping members will cause the edge of said lining to become upset or rolled over so as to provide a second retaining shoulder, as at I) (Fig. l). The member (I thus coacts with the lining l) in providing, in connection with the lining A of the door, an absolute protection for the wood of the door against llame. Of course, the same die recess may be formed in the member B, so that the lining D would be rolled at both edges during the process of applying the lock and cscutehcon. For simplicitys sake, however, the lining 1) may be made up with one roll, as above indicated, the other roll being formed when the lock is applied, and furnishing thereby a permanent effective connection. If, for any reason, flame or great heat should get within the passage or through the door, it cannot dangerously. attack and char the wood of the stile A between the plates A A.
The members I3 and C may be made of any desired construction and may be designed to perform any suitable function, so long as they perform the main function in this case, of serving to overstand the edge of the passage entirely around the same, and at the same time constitute a means to cooperate with the lining D when the parts are assembled.
In practice it will be seen that the die recess, which receives the edge of the lining, together with the edge of said lining which stands therein, forms a tongueandgroove connection which will more effectively prevent the entrance of lire. This tongue-andgroove connection also aids as a means to prevent the lateral displacement of the clamping member relatively to the interior lining member, and hence holds the same properly centered relatively to the passage. The construction, therefore, has distinct advantages not only as a means for resisting lire, but also as a mechanical construction useful at all times and for all purposes. This would be conspicuously true in the event when one of the clamping members is a lock and the other an eschutcheon plate, as shown, for in such case the importance of having such parts properly alined is very essential.

1. In a device of the character described, a door having a passage therethrough, a fire protecting plate on one surface of said door,
fitting the passage through the door, and cooperating clamping members arranged to overstand the edge of said plate and lining entirely around the opening to protect the wood work around said passage.
2. In a device of the character described, a protecting device for the wood work of a passage through a door, comprising a lining member fitted within said passage, two clamping members arranged to stand on opposite sides of the door, one of said clamping members over-standing and engaging the edge of said lining.
3. In a device of the character described, a protecting device for the wood. work of a passage through a door, comprising a lining member fitted within said passage, two clamping members arranged to stand on opposite sides of the door, both of said clamping members overstanding and engaging the edge of said lining.
4. In a device of the character described, a protecting device for the wood of a passage through a door, including a lining fitted to said passage, a shoulder at one edge of said lining, clamping members arranged to engage on opposite sides of the door, one of said clamping members forming a die to receive and turn the other edge of said lining, and means for drawing said clamping members toward each other.
5. In a device of the character described, a lining member and plates arranged to coact therewith at opposite edges thereof, a
l I l l I l l clamping member having a groove therein corresponding in outline to the adjacent edge of the lining member.
6. In a device of the character described, a lining lneinber, plates arranged to coact therewith at opposite edges thereof, a clamping member having a groove therein corresponding in outline to the adjacent edge of the lining member, the cross-sectional outline of said groove being rounded.
7. In a door protecting device, two clamping members, means for drawing the same toward each other, a lining member arranged edge-wise between said clamping members, one of said clamping members cooperating with the adjacent edge of the lining member to roll the edge thereof.
8. In a door protecting device, two clamping members, means for drawing the same toward each other, a lining member arranged edge-wise between said clamping members,
one of said clamping members cooperating with the adjacent edge of the lining member to roll the edge thereof, both of said clamping members projecting laterally from said lining member at all points around the same.
9. In a device of the characterdescribed, a lining arranged to stand between two clamping members and edgewise relatively thereto, two clamping members, said lining making a tongueand-groove connection with one of said clamping members, and means for drawing said clamping members toward each other.
