ORRIN B. READ, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
HORSE-TAIL HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 30, 1908.
Application filed September 11, 1907. Serial No. 392,374.
1 York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ho rse-Ta1l Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to such improvements and consists of the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompany ing drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures therein.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan View of the inner side of my improved horse-tail holder laid out Flat. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of the same bent to circular form as in use. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the same taken on the broken'line 44 in Fig. 3.
The invention relates more particularly to horse-tail holders made entirely of metal: and the particular object of the invention is to more effectively support the holder upon the tail of the horse.
Referring to the drawings wherein the invention is shown in preferred form, 1, repre sents a strip of resilient sheet-metal of suitable width and length for use as a tail-holder, in the body of which strip are formed a plurality of diamond-shaped apertures, 2, and a plurality of half-diamondshaped apertures, 3, all of which apertures are arranged longi tudinally of the middle portion of the strip, the half-diamondshaped apertures being located, near one end thereof with their dia- ILlOlHhSllfiPQCi ends pointing toward the cen ter of the strip.
The opposite end of the strip is provided with an introverted hook, 4, formed by cuttings-11d inwardly displacing a-portion of the fody of the strip, said hook being adapted to enter the several half-diamond-shaped apertures and to engage with the square outer end-wall of one aperture within which it is inserted, and thereby to serve as a lock for securing the holder in circular form, as suown in Figs. 3 and 4, to which form the holder is bent in use so as to embrace the tail of the horse.
Albrnctal tail-lmlders tend to slip and become displaced on the horses tail, unless in theproper position.
As a novel means for retaining the tailholder in position upon the tail of the horse, in use, I provide the holder with a plurality of introverted tongues formed by bending inwardly portions of the body of the strip along certain sides of the apertures 2 and 3.
Certain of these tongues, 5, are bent inwardly from such sides of the respective apertures that they incline in one direction while certain other of said tongues, 6, are
provided with special means to retain them bent inwardly from such diflerently located sides of other apertures that they incline in the opposite direction, and the tongues, 5 and 6, are preferably arranged in alternation, as shown, so that they form V-shaped spaces between them and will not pass readily along the hairs of the horses tail, but will tend to wedge the hairs of the tail between the neighboring tongues, and thereby support the holder in proper position upon the tail.
For certain purposes of the invention the shape of the openmgs is immaterial so long as the tongues are obliquely arranged and inclined some in one direction, and some in another direction.
When the holder is applied to the tail of the horse, the strip, 1, is bent to circular form, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and clamped around the tail by entering the hook, l, in the proper aperture, 3; the operation of applying the holder to the tail serving to embed the oppositely inclined tongues, 5 and 6, in the hairs of the tail, the tongues readily entering between the hairs without injury to the same.
For certain purposes of the invention it is immaterial whether the inwardly projecting tongues are integral with the body of the holder or not, and for such purposes the holder may be provided in any known manner with with inwardly pro'ecting tongues occupying ilanes inclined obliquely to the plane of the body of the holder.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A horse-tail holder comprising a strip of resilient material having means for securing together the ends of the strip when bent to circular form, and having introverted tongues severally occupying planes oblique to the longitudinal axis of the holder.
2. A horse-tail holder comprising a strip of resilient material having means for securing together the ends of the strip when bent to circular form, and having introverted tongues, certain of which are inclined in one direction, and certain others in the opposit inclined tongues forme direction.
3. A horse-tail holder comprising a strip of resilient material provided with a lon 1- tudinal row of a ertures, certain'of the we is of which are ob iquely inclined, and having means for securing together the ends of the strip when bent to circular form, and obliquely inclined introverted tongues formed by portions of the body of the strip bent inwardly alon certain of the obliquely inclined walls of sai apertures.
4. A horse-tail holder comprising a strip of resilient material provided with a longitudinal row of apertures, certain of the walls of some of which are inclined in one direction, and certain of the walls of others of which are inclined in the opposite direction, and having means for securing together the ends of the stri when bent to circular form, and
introverte tongues formed by portions of each with a s uare outer end adapted to engage said hoo r, and with inclined walls at its inner end, said striip having-introverted by ben ginwardly portions of the strip along certain. of the inclined walls of said a ertures.
'6. A horse-tail-ho der having inwardly at one end an intro-.
projectin tongues severally occupying planes obi i ue to the longitudinal axis or the o der.
7. A horse-tail-holder having inwardly projecting tongues, certain of which are inclined in one direction, and certain others in the opposite direction.
8. A horse-tailholder having an apertured metal body, and inwardly projecting t ngues formed by introverted portions of said metal body, adjacent to the respective apertures severally occupying planes oblique to the longitudinal axis of the holder.
9. A horse-tailholder having a metal body provided with a longitudinal row of apertures, certain of the walls of which are ob: li uely inclined, and having obliquely inclined inwardly projectin tongues formed byintroverted ortions of said metal body bent inwardly a ong certain of the obliquely inclined walls of said a ertures.
10. A horse-tail-hol er having a metal body provided with a longitudinal row of apertures, certain of the walls of which are inclined in one direction, walls of others of which are inclined. in the opposite direction, and having inwardly projecting ton ues formed by introverted portions of sai metal body bent inwardly a ong the respective oppositely inclined walls of said apertures. v
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of September, 1907.
