WEATHER-STRIP.
No. 891,662. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 23, 1908.
Application filed Decexiiber 13, 1906. Serial No. 347,708.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ODD T. AKRE, citizen of the United States, residing at Wallin ford, in the county of Emmet and State of owa, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Weather-Strips, of which the ollowing is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide novel means for excluding wind, dust, and dampness, and has for its object toprovide an improved construction of weather strip which may be attached to the frame of-a door, or window, or secured to the part to be rendered tight, said strip being devised with the special View of cooperating with the stop of a door, or window, and com risin angularly disposed portions, one 0 which is confined by the stop, and the other extending in front of the stop so as to come between it and the closure, whether the latter be a door, sash, or other like art. i
For a fu description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in' which Fi ure 1' is a detail perspective view of a weat er strip embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a slmilar view of a modification. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of a door frame and door rovided with a weather strip embodying t einvention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin descriptlon and indicated in all the views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.
The weather stri comprises angularly disposed wings 1 and 2, the wing 1 being exceedingly thin and tapered to an edge away from the wing 2.
The wing 2 is comparatively thick so as to maintain its proper shape and position, sustaining the wear of the moving part rubbing thereover. The wings 1 and 2 are applied approximately at a right angle to each other so as to fit about the corner of a stop, or like striplas indicated most clearly in Fig. 3.
e tapered wing 1 is ada ted to be confined between the sto 3 an the frame 4 of the door, window, or 'ke part. By having the wing 1 tapered to an edge, and of less width than the top it is not exposed when the Fig. 1 to the up er and ower stops and to the stop against w ich the movable edge oftlie door closes. The form shown in Fig. 2 is applied to the stop adjacent to thehinged edge of the door, thereby admitting of the door working upon the convex side when closing.
By having the form shown in Fig. 1 applied to the stop a ainst which the free ed e of the door closes, slamming of the door is o viated and a tight joint assured, since the projecting edge of the win 2 is adapted to e slightly compressed and of the door being closed and latched.
The Weatherstrip may be constructed of any material best adapted for the urpose but it is preferred to form the same 0 pliable material, thereby admitting of'rolling the strip and of the same conforming to the irregularities in the surface so as to insure a tight joint between the frame 4 and the stop 3 when in position.
The preferred material is rubber which is elastic and not affected by dampness. The strip is provided in any length and is adapted to be cut to fit a door, window, or other part to be protected against the weather in the manner herein stated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claime as new is:
The combination of a frame, a swinging closure for the frame, a stop applied to the frame for limiting the movement of the swinging closure, and a weather strip cooperating with the stop, the said weather strip being formed of elastic material and comprising two wings disposed at right angles to each other, one of the wings being clamped between the stop and the frame and being of less width than the stop, the said wing also graduall tapering in thickness toward its outere go to obviate the necesthereby admits sity fcr recessing the stop, While the opposite In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 7 wing bears against the edge of the stop and in presence of two witnesses.
corresponds in Width to the thickness of the ODD T AKRE [L S 1 same, the said opposite Wing having a thickened formation and being ada ted to be Witnesses: compressed against the stop by t e swinging S. CERUTAPHEN,
. closure. H. E. Fls'rnn.
