R. H. PA RKS, O F COLUMBUS, OHIO.'
Letters Patent No. 89,165, dated April 20, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-SHOES.
The Sehedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concer-a Be it known that I, R. H. Banus, of Columbus, iu.
the county of Franklin, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Horse-Shoes; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification This invention relates to improvements iu horseshoes, designed to promote expansion of the heel.
It consists in bending the ends of the shoe, at the rear, inward, in the form of the frog, and uniting them at a point corresponding to the point of the frog to permit it to rest thereon.
It also consists in bevelling the upper face of the shoe, nea-r the heel, where the walls of the heel rest upon it,'so'as to have a constant tendency to spread thereon.
Figure l represents a plan view of my improved shoe;
Figure 2 represents a rear elevation of the same; and
Figure 3 represents a section ofthe same, taken on the line x x, fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
I propose to bend the two part-s of the shoe, which commonly terminate at A, into the form represented at B B', and unite them at C, to form a support for the frog.
I also propose to bevel the two parts of the shoe from the heel towards the point ou the top thereof, as represented at I), making the outer edge the lowest, so that the pressure of the weight of the animal upon that part of the walls of the heel resting thereon, will tend to expand or spread the heel.
The shoes now commonly used give nosupport to the frog, and the natural effect of the Weight is to cause a contraction or drawing in of the heel.
My improved shoe may be used'benecially in treating horses suffering from lameness due to the contractiou of the heel, and when so used, I employ packing or stuffing of tar and balsam of r, or other similar substance, to be packed in the spaces around the frog,
for the purpose of softening the parts to facilitate the expansion.
I also propose,`instead of employing calks at the toes, as commonly done', to continue the nail-groove.
around and nail the shoes to the toes.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A horse-shoe, extended to form the support B B', for the frog, and bevelledl in the parts D, substantially as specied.
