f To all-whim it comem:
Be itknown that-I, WILLIAM; M. RYAN, a citizen -of the United States, and a res-ident of `Chicago, county of Cook, andState of-Illi- 'nois, have invented certain new and -useful Improvements in Railway-Cars, of which I do declare the-following to' beafull, clear', and exact description, 'reference being had to the V'accompanying drawings, for'ming part This vention has for its object to provide. improved mean's for strengthe the 'underframe Of'wooden railway cars an the invenf ftion consists in the .features `of novelty hereinafter described, illustrated "inf the accompan drawings. and particularly pointed .out in t e claims at-:the end of .this specification.'v
g lligurel isa lan view of the under-'frame zo 'of a railway car avlngmy invention appliedv etter thereto, .parts being broken away for Fig. 2 is a view in vertical secr illustration.
tion on line '2+2 of Fig. 1. "'Fig. 3 vis a viewi in section on line 3-3 of. Fig. 2. Fig. 4 a 2 5-view in 'sectionl on line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 isa view in section .on line-5 5. of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail planview of my improved ldraft sill, with thrust beamsl connectedy thereto iat its inner end. Fig. 7 is a view in sideelevation of theparts shown in Fig.` 6.
Fig. 1-is shown as provided with the endcross sill 2, with outside longitudinal sills 3 With the-intermediate sills 4 an'd with the innercross sill 5, and, as shown, there are tie rods 6 and 7 connectingthe end sill 2 and the cross sill 5,` The outer ends ofthe tie rods 7 areshown as rejecting beyond the cross sill 2 and throug a plate 8 on the outery face thereof and as carryinlg the buffer heads 9.
' Beneath the end si 2 is set my improved draft s ill that consists of a single metal casting, and -this draft sill is formed Au. on its vupper surface with a rib: or shou der 10 against which will bearl the rear face ofthe cross-sill 2.
.that project laterally from the front end of the draft sill at its top. draft sill terminates preferabl in line with the outer face of the cross s' l2. My 1mproved draft sill is provided With the depend- Ing side walls v12 and with the top plate 13 forming a chamber to receive the stemor shank of the coupling that will rest upon the Specification of Letters Patent.
. upon the top ofthe draft sill.
' also extends.
vunder frame of the car.
The cross-sill 2 is shown-as at# tached, by through bolts 11 to lthe flangesl The front end o f the Patented June 23, 1190s.
'plate 14 that extends between the side walls 1 2 at their .front end.
. Fromthe top of my improved draft sill, Aadjacent its front end, rise the ribs or flanges 15 (see Figs. -and 7) that connect with the raised 'shoulder or'iiange 10, these 'parts form- Ing a pocket to receive the forward end Of a Wooden beam 16 that extends'over and rests t From the rear portion of tne top plate of the draft sill rise the iianges iS-between'which thebeam 16 As shown, there are side beams 20 extending alongside the beam 16, thesefside beams resting u Onthe top'of the draft sill outside the raisednribsor flanges 15 and 18, and these beams 20-are held in place by through bolts 21 that passthrough the beams 20 and throughlaterally projecting flanges 22 thatextend from the top of the draft sill;
The rear'end ofmy improved draft `sillis shown as rovided with rear extensions 24 lbetween W 'cli-are set the channel shaped thrustbeams' 25, these thrust'beams-25 being securely riveted as at 26- to the side wallsof therear extensions 24. It will be understood, of course, that the thrust' beams 25 and, aswell, also, the vbeams '16 and 20, will they will be connected to a draft sill similar The. under-'frame of the car illustrated inl to that abovel described and illustrated -in -the drawings.
The rear portion of improved 'draft sill is provided with a transverse opening'SO to receive abolster 31 that is connected to the bolster 31 is com os'ed of a plurality of Wooden and meta beams securely vb'olted together, the center beam of the bolster, as' we.
l asthe beam 16; being rovided Witha hole 32 to receivethe usualv ng-bolt 'ofthe car. The bottom, to 'and'end walls,1formv -ing the -opening 30- o `the draft sill, are in.-
tegral with the-body 'of the sill, and the bottom plate 33 ofthe opening 30 is formed with a circular dependinglportion 34 'that 1s perforated to emnit'l the assage,4 lthere'- through of the lng-bolt. `T 's vcircular depending ortion 34 ofthe draftsill serves as a center p ate which sets within the raised circular portion of a center plate bearing 40 that is secured upon the truck beam 41. As shown, the center `plate bearing v 4 0 and truck beam 41 are perforated fto recelve the kina'fbo'lt. The undersidelofmyinnproved dr'a-ft sill is formed with depending flan es 43 which extend at each side of the circu arl By forming the draft sill witlra transverse opening to receive the bolster, said 'transverse' opening having a bottom plate formed integra` therewith and adapted to serve as a center plate, a -niuch more effective and durable construction of draft sill is provided, as the strains and thrusts upon the draft sill are transmitted directly to the center plate bearing 40 on top of the truc; beam 4l.
.Having thus described my i vention, what I claim as new, `and desire to i iclure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination With the under-frame of a car, of a metallic draft sill having its rear end provided vvith a transverse opening to receive a bolster, said opening having a bottom plate formed integral with the bodyof thedraft sill and serving as a center plate.
2. The combination With the under-frame of a car, of a metallic draft sill having its rear end provided with a transverse opening to receive a bolster, said opening having a bottom plate formed with a circular depending .and perforated portion. integral with the body of the sill and servingr as a center plate. 3. `The comb' ation with the under-fram@ lof a car, of a me allie draft sill having its rear endfprovide'd with atransverse opening to receive abolster, said opening having a bottomiplate formed With a circular depending and/perforated 'portion integral With 'the v body of the 'sill and serving as a center plate,
said bottom plate being also formed with flanges 'depending at the sidesv of said circu lar portion, and a center plate bearing having'a Araised'annular flange extending between said circular portionof the draft sill andV the` flanges at the sides thereof.
4. Thefcombination with the under-frame of a car, of a metallic draftsill having its rear end providedwith a transverse opening to receive a bolster, said opening havlng a. bot-v toni plate formed integral with the body of the draft sill, saidv draft sill having rearwardly projecting flanges to which thrust beams may be secured.
