I REINFORCING-33AR FGR GEEvEEZN'IITI-OUS BQTA'IEB.
To all whom it rim/y concern:
Be it known that I, 'l lnwiinn F. CRANE, citizen of the United St ates, and resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new v and useful Improvements in Reinforcing Bars for Cementitious Bodies, of which the following is u specification. y
In the use of cementitious substances, such as concrete, for building and other-purposes, it is customary to reinforce and import a (lesircd tensile strength to the semeby embed; ding therein suit-able metallic members,
such combine-lion of metallic reinforcing mem bers with the cementitious body resulting in the formation of a composite structure capeble of resisting both compressive and tensile strains to a. very great degree; When no. tallie members are embedded in e cementitious body, it is (le sirable that a, complete adhesion and union of .the two elements should be obtained to prevent movement of one relatively to the other, and this is usually accomplished by providing the metallic reinforcing members with e series or transversely-urronged shoulders for interlocking engagement with the comentitious body. These interlocking shoulders are usually formed by e distortion oi some character of the bar constituting the reinlorcmg memberfund such distortion in someinstnnces is ol such character as to re sult in u lessening of the the bar. It is obviously desirable, however,
that all the motel entering into or lornnng port of the our, including that providing its interlocking shoulders, should be so disposed us to develop its full tensile strength. This is nccomplisl'ied in the reinl'orcingber disclosed in Letters Patent No. 820,704, issued ,to nc Mary 15, 1906, by forming the her with .a plurality of parallel spirals ol dill'erent depths having more or lessnbruptly-lormerl shoulders between the some pr interlocking engagement with the cementitious body, the said spirals being so arranged that the bar will be -ol' uniform crosssectional area. throughout its length and therefore of uniform tensile strength. I have found, however, that miler results may be obtained by it somewhat diii'erent formation of bar, which, in accord once with my present invention in a. preferred form thereof, consists in forming the bar with a plurality of longitudinal sinu- Speeifi'cation of Letters l'atent. Application filed February 11 1907.

! ously-extending ribs, the sides of. which, by reason of the sinuous form of the ribs, will l present oseries oi shoulders extending trens l versely of the length of the her for interlockl ing engagement with the cementitious body 1 in which it may be embedded, and which form and arrangement of'rihs provide a. bar of uniform cross-sectional area throughout 'its length, and therefore of uniform tensile strength. l l
Referring now to the eccompenyin%drawlog forming port of this specification igures 1, 2, 3 end 4 are perspective views of reinforcing hers embodying different forms of my invention, end Fig. 5 is' a plan view of the bar shown in Fig. 1, combined with e cementil tious body, which letter is partially removed l from the brr to disclose the letter.
1 Similar reference eherecters designate like parts in the severslfigures of the drawings.
in the drawings; 6 designates generally a metallic reinforcingbar formed in uccordonce with my IHVEIUJIQIL', and c designat the concrete or other cementitious body in which, l as shown in Fig. 5, the said reinforcing-beiis adopted to be embedded. l The reinforcing-her b, in accordance 'with my invention as hereinloelore referred. to, is preferably formed with a plurality of lon itudinal sinuously-extending ribs 2, the si es of which presents series of shoulders 3-3 extendin more or less transversely of the length or the her for interlocking engagernent with the eementitious body 0, the said shoulders being preferably mude quite abrupt between the adjacent surl'uces 4--4 of the bar I) in. order to rovide u more positive interlock between t re bur end the comentitious body. A bur thus formed will be of uniform cross-'sectionnl.eren throughout its length, and therefore of uniform tensile strength, and the transversely-urrunged shoulders iorined by the sides of the sinuossibilityol' movement of one transverse shoulder surface for interlocking engzigonici'itwith .tho coii'mntitious ho ly siillioioni. to, prevent; possibility of nicn'eniont of one relative to tho other. Figs. 1 and 2, the ribs 1,. oxto d in a general! straight iino iongitinlinally of tho so desired, the hair may be twhod subse quent llO ills rolling for the purpose hot of causing the sinuous ribs to extend spirnliy of transverse shouldor surl'ace, as shown in Fig. 4, well as causing an inorrziso in 'Lho tensile strength of the bar.
An important feature of tho sinuous form of the ribs -12 is the fact that opposing shonl ders are provided, such as 5--5 or 6---G, which operate, not only to lool the bar against longitudinal movement in the cen1- ont-itious body in a straight line, but also to look the bar against any turning niov incnt in the cementitious body in a spiral or other direction.
As shown in Ifig. 3, tho ribs 2 are broken (ii-interrupted in a. manner to provide a phirnlity of rib sctions mfrnngod in staggered relation to each other, tho ends 7 of whirh engagementwii-li the comoniirfious body, iLli- As shown in i l i 5 'iion and liming uiiinirrri ohc it Lhe bar and thereby incruaso ll ziron tions liodii-s, conin hair, on; n
dicionai to tho shoulders provided by the sides of the ribs.
