' that is, withno appreciable play but with asmooth and relatively snug fit, but in no sense a driving engagement.
As a result of the above construction the butt of the bobbin hasno lateral movement relatively to the spindle and runs perfectly true with relation thereto, while the driving effected by the clutching Ineans,'- as will be obvious.
. When the bobbin isapplied to hes indle the expanded upper portions oft e-c utching members are somewhat compres'se'd or pushed inward as they enter the smaller {part or chamber bf of the bore, to insure a firm driving engagement therewith."
By reference to Figs. land 3-, it will be seen that the barrel of the bobbin adjacent the butt is of relatively small diameter, such form-of bobbin having been devised more articularly for 'use in so-called -.feeler ooms, it being desirable to make of small diameter, the part of the-barrel on which the bobbin when used with centrifuga yarn iswound'with which the ieeler cooperates. Such bobbins at-best have a thin Wallat the junction of the barrel with the butt, and in order to maintain the 'stren th 'ofthe ly-acting clutching means, it is absolutely necessary that such means operate within a chamber or opening of the smallest possible diameter. For that reason the part b of thebore is ,made of considerably smaller diameter than the part b, for if the diameter of such part b j should be continued up the full length of the bore in the bobbin-butt it would so weaken the bobbin at the 'unction of the barrel with the butt that'a re atively sli ht blow would break the bobbin. This wil be clear from an inspection ofeither' Fig; 1 or Fig. 3 of the drawing. Such a uniformly large herein the butt has been found in practlce impracticable and has been given up for the reasons above set forth. It is of great importance, therefore, that the lower chamberin the bobbin butt, i. a, the one adjacent its outer end, shallbe ofrelatively large diameter and it is of. equal importance that the upper chamber-be of as small diameter as will receive the clutching means, on account of the necessity to maintain as much material as possible in the bobbin at the junction of the barrel with the butt. i The counterboringof the bobbin to provide the two adjacent portions of different .diameters'is very easily'effected, and the steadyingv device on the spindle at the same time aflords a. convenient means for vertically sup orting and laterally confining-the lower end of the clutch members. f
Havingdescribed my invention, what I :claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is r 1.
