Description
C. SCHARFFE.
Sewing-Machine Attachment. No. 89,085. Patented April 20, 1869.
Witnesses: 'I-nvent'or:
UNITED STATES CARL SCHARFFE, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM G. WILSON,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATHERING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 89,085, dated April 20, 1869.
' for gathering or plaitin g for sewing-machines,
to be operated by the motion of the machine through the needle-bar or other suitable means;
and consists of a plate, A, having a hole, a, by which it may be secured to the machine with a thumb-screw.
The said plate A is provided with ears I) I), through which a rod, B, passes. One end of said rod is provided with a foot or guide, 0, which lays the work in plaits or gathers, as desired, the opposite end of said rod being provided with a screw, D, by means of which the size of the plait or gathering is regulated, a spring, D, being coiled round the said rod, as shown.
E is a bent lever, pivoted to an ear at w, and is attached to the rod B by the connecting-arm F, the opposite end of said arm being secured to the rod B by a pin passing through said rod and connected to the arm. The end of the lever E is curved round, form ing an opening, through which the needle passes. Thus, in operating the machine, the needle bar strikes on the lever, giving to it the motion of the machine; and said lever being connected to the rod B by the connectingarm F, the rod is caused to operate by the motion of the machine through the needle-bar, thus operating the foot or feeder, which takes up the cloth in larger or smaller plaits or gathers, as the case may require, which can be regulated by the spring and screw referred to.
This device or attachment may be placed 011 and fastened to the cloth-plate of any sewingmachine by the thumb-screw used for holding the gage and other similar attachments, placing it in such a position that the lever E shall be pressed upon by the needle-bar of the machine, the needle playing through the end of said lever E. This is very effectual and certain in its work, will gather into fine gathers or broad plaits muslins and other fabrics commonly used in family sewing.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the rod B, adjustingscrew D, feeder C, lever E, connecting rod or arm F, and plate A, the same being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
CARL SCHARFFE.
