To all wz om it may concern:

Be it known that I, TOLBERT J. RoBisoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Curwensville, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Stamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of this invention is to provide novel details of construction for a hand stamp, which adapt it for special service for stamping dates or other printed matter in books used by beneficial societies, wherein weekly accounts are kept, and that is also available for general use as a dating stamp.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as is hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure l is a partly sectional side view of the hand stamp, seen in direction of the arrow :t in Fig. 2, parts thereof being broken away Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view, substantially on the line 2`2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the application of the improved stamp for marking a record in a book.

The body of the stamp comprises a handle piece 5, and a type holder 6. As shown, the handle piece 5 is preferably formed of plate metal, having parallel sides and a suitable width and thickness, one edge thereof being concaved as at a, for a purpose that will hereinafter be explained. Upon the normally upper transverse edge of the part 5, a cylindrical grip piece 5EL is mounted and secured, preferably by insertion of said edge into a longitudinal groove a formed in the grip piece, or the handle may be of other convenient form. The type holder 6 is in the form of a plate metal box having parallel sides 6a, and sloped ends 6b, the space between the sides being so proportioned that the lower end of the handle piece 5 will fit neatly within the upper end of said holder box, wherein it is secured by rivets b, or other means. The lower edges c of the side walls of the holder box 6 are convexed a suitable degree, and the upper edges thereof are correspondingly concaved, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

In one end of the type holding box 6, a `wedge block 7 is slidably fitted, the smaller end thereof being uppermost, and 'from said end extends an adjusting screw 7, that is passed upward through a perforation in the handle piece 5 at the end wherein the scalloped concavity a, is formed, and upon the screw 7a a thumb nut 7b is mounted, that is seated upon the level portion on the handle piece produced by the scallop a.

In the holder box a plurality of dating type 8 are placed, of a character to make a proper imprint upon a page in a book A, these type being assembled in the box, as indicated in Fig. l. The type 8 may be of any preferred character taken from a font used in commercial or other printing, and of course, have parallel sides and edges.

To compensate for the curvature given to the lower edge of the type holder box 6, and arrange the type 8 so as to have a printing surface of the same convexity as is given to said lower edges, spacing blocks d are employed, which are wedge-shaped and when introduced between the type where they are needed, serve to take up gaps that would be left between the type if this form of the spacing `blocks was not given thereto.

It will be seen that if the wedge block 7 is slackened in adjustment at the time type S are introduced in the holder box, and blocks d' of proper thickness are placed between the printing type so as to neatly fill the holder box considered longitudinally, a proper adjustment of the nut 7b on the adjusting screw 7L will pull upward upon the wedge block and cause it to bear upon the type, thus clamping them firmly within the holder.

To give lateral support to the hand stamp, a rocker arm 9 is provided, consisting of a metal rod bent into form, as indicated in the drawings, said arm being shaped as follows: At an equal distance from the ends of the wire rod, two nearly right angular bends c are formed thereon, and the material e between said bends, is given arcuate form, the degree of curvature had by this portion of the rocker arm being similar to that given to the edges c of the holder box 6. The bends c produce upright limbs g, and at 7L, 7L, bends are formed that are equally distant from said bends e, and the end portions i, i, that extend laterally from the bends 71, preferably are arched somewhat, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Their free end portions having threads thereon, are neatly fitted into lateral perforations in the walls 6'LL near the end walls of the holder box 6, and are held therein by thumb nuts m. The rocker arm 9, by its form andV relative position, affords a lateral support for the type holder 6, the arcuate member e of said arm that rests upon the same base as the stamp in use, serving to hold said type box upright.

lt will be seen that by grasping` the grip piece 5a, the convexed surface of the type in the box 6 may be rocked over an ordinary inking pad, and then applied upon a selected page of a book A at a proper point for imprinting a date thereon, or any other matter set up in the holder box 6. Furthermore, the preferred use of the hand stamp for the dating of attendance and dues paid by meinbers of a benevolent association, is greatly facilitated by the specific construction of the device, as it enables the position of the stamp on a page of a ledger or similar book used by the society, to be quickly and exactly determined by initially resting the member e of the rocker arm alone upon the opened leaf of the book, then moving the stamp to the exact point on the leaf, then causing the type to impinge upon the paper sheets and complete the operation by rocking the stamp 5 and it will be noted that the arched form given to the printing surface insures a perfect impression, as equal pressure may be given to every portion of the type matter held in the box 6.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A hand stamp, embodying a handle, a type holding box on one end of said handle and having its lower edge convexed, printing type having parallel sides, spacing blocks that are between the type and have wedge form, and a wedge-shaped clamping block adjustably held in the box at one end thereof, said block having a screw stein extended from the small end thereof, andv a nut on said screw adapted for drawing on the block and clamping the type in the box.

2. A hand stamp, embodying a type holding box having convexed lower edges on its side walls, a handle on the upper portion thereof, means for securing type in the box so that their printing faces assume arched form, and a rocker arm projected laterally and downwardly from the side of the box and spaced therefrom, the lower edge of said arm being` eonvexed similarly to the arched face of the type in the holder box, whereby the y arm affordslateral rockable support to the stamp when used.

3. A hand stamp, comprising a type holding box, a handle thereon, said box having curved lower edges on its side walls and upwardly converged end. walls, type having parallel sides and 'fitted into the box, wedgeshaped spacing blocks inserted between the type for giving the workii'ig face of the assembled type arched form, a wedge bloekin the box at one end thereof and having a screw on one end, means for drawing on the screw so as to press the wedge block against the type, and a rocking arm projected at one side of the type holding box, said arm having an arched member that rests on the paper when the type surface is rocked for printing n'iatter thereon.
