To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. CRANE, citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electromagnetic Signal-( ontrolling Devices, of which the fol-- lowing is a full, clear, concise, and. exact description.
My invention relates to an electromagnetic signal controlling device, and has for its object to provide an improved, simplified and eilicicnt magnetic controller adapted to eil'cct the sequential operation of electrical devices or mechanisms.
The device of my invention is capable of specially advantageous use in connection with telephone exchange service, being adapted for use as a combined line and cutoil relay.
Generally speaking, iny invention. contemplates a magnetic controlling device comprising an electromagnct provided with two armatures, one of which is adapted when attracted to'opcratc a contact device and close a gap iii the magnetic circuit of said magnet, said armature being responsive to current in said magnet. ed to respond upon the closure of said magnetic gap by said first-mentioned armature to an increase of current through said magnet, and is arranged when attracted, to operate contact devices associated therewith. With my device, therefore,employing but a single magnet, a sequential operation of circuit controlling devices may be obtained.
I will describe my invention by reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein,

The armature (Z is thus primarily under the control of armature a, and after the armature b has acted to close the gap, the control of armature (Z is transferred to its magnet winding, which upon receiving current, increases the magnetic iluX to eliect the operation of said armature. It will be noted that the arma tures l) d are serially included in the magnetic circuit of the electroinagnet, each of said armaturcs forming a return pole piece or the other.
The armature d is adapted in its movement to operate contact devices which in the present instance conrprisc three contact springs and. their anvils, mounted upon but insulated from the corccxtcnsion c, the armature preferably carrying pins g adapted upon the movement of said armature to engage sand separate said springs from their anvils These contact springs in telephone service might control the line and line signal circuits, in the manner of the well known cut-cit relay.
I claim: v
' 1. The combination with a magnet having two ga sin its magnetic circuit, of an armature for sai magnet responsive to current therein while both gaps are open, said armature being adapted in its attractive movement to close one of said gaps, and a second armature for said magnet unresponsive while both gaps are open to the current operatip said other armature, said second-armature bein adapted to respond, upon the closure of said gap by said first mentioned armature to an increase of current in said magnet and to close said other gap.
2. The combination with a magnet having two gaps in its magnetic circuit, of an armature for said magnet responsive 'to current therein adapted to close one of said gaps, and a second armature for said magnet, responsive upon the closure of said gap, to an increase of current in said magnet, the closure of said second gap being efi'eeted jointly by said armatures.
3. The combination with an electromagnet having two windings, of two armatures included in the magnetic circuit of the mag net, said circuit having an air gap between the core of the magnet and one of saidarmatures, and a second air gap between said armatures, one of said armatures beingarranged to respond While both of said gaps are open to a current in one of the windings of said magnetto close said first mentioned gap, and
said other armature being arranged to respond to an increase in the magnetic flux in said circuit produced by the closure of said first'mentioned gap and the current in. both said windings. I 4. The combination with an electromagnet having two windin s, of two armatures pivoted to swing in planes perpendicular to each other and included in the magnetic circuit of said magnet, said circuit havin two air gaps therein, one of said armatures being responsive to current in one of said windings to close one of said gaps, and said other armaturebeing responsiveto the increased magnetic'flux due to the closure of said gap and to current in both of said windings to close said other gaIp.
5. In an e ectric signal controlling device, the combination with an-electromagnet, of an armature for said magnet responsive to current therein, said armature when attracted closing a gap in the magnetic circuit of; said magnet, a second armature for said magnet also controlling a ga in the magnetic circuit, the'free end of sai armature lyingadjacent said first mentioned armature, said second armature being adapted to respond upon the closure of sai first mentioned magnetic gap to an increase of current in said magnet,- thereupon engaging said first mentioned armature to close the second magnetic gap and complete the magnetic circuit of the magnet, and mechanism controlled by said arinatures.
6. In an electric signal-controlling device,
the combination with an electromagnet, of
an L-shaPed' armature for said magnet responsive to current therein, one arm of said armature lying parallelto the magnet spool, said armature when attracted closing a gap in the magnetic circuit of said magnet, a second armature lying parallel to the magnet spool and controlling a gap in said magnetic circuit, the free end of said armature lying close to said arm of the L-shaped armature,
said second armature being adapted to respond upon the closure of the gap controlled by the first mentioned armature, to an increase of current in said magnet, thereupon engaging said arm of the L-shaped armature to close the, second magnetic gap and com plete the magnetic circuit of said magnet, and mechanism controlled by said armatures.
7. The combination with a magnet having two gaps in its magnetic circuit, of an armature for said magnet ada ted to close one of said gaps and partially c ose the other gap, and a second armature for said magnet responsive upon the closure of said first mentioned ga to current in said magnet to cil'ect the comp ete closure of said other gap.
8. The combination with the magnet core,
of two armatures movably mounted to form,
with each other and with said core, a com= plete magnetic circuit, said circuit being closed bysaid armatures in their attracted positions. 9. The combination with a single spool electromagnet, of a core for said magnet, and
two armatures adapted to jointly complete a -magnetic circuit for said core, said armatures bemg serially included 1n said magnetic circuit.
10. The combination with a single spool magnet, each of said armatures forming the return pole piece for the other.
11. The combination with an electromagnet, of two armatures therefor adapted when attracted to engage each other to com plete the magnetic circuit of said magnet.
12. The combination with an electroma net, of two armat'ures therefor adapted to iorm magnetic extensions from opposite eiectromagnet, of two armatures for saidends of the magnet core, the free ends of said armatures being adapted to engage to complete the magnetic circuit of said magnet.
