JOHN BROWN, OF PITTSGROVE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JOI-IN B. HARRIS, OF SAME PLACE. l
Letters Patent No. 89,020, datedApw'l 20, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMP-VALVE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
.Be it known that I, JOHN H. BROWN, of Pittsgrove, in the county of Salem, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Attachment for Well-Water Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification,.and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The exposed pumps, for raising water from wells, are subject to freezing in winter weather, and therefore often require to be thawed by the application of hot water, or otherwise,at the expense of more or less time and trouble; and
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means, or device, for preventing said objectionableresults.
My invention consists in the application to the pump and platform ofthe well, of a lever flattened at its lower end, so as to fit over and close a drain-hole made for the purpose, in the pump, below the platform, when required; and with a pawl-catch at its upper end, whereby the iiattened lower end of the said lever can be readily caused to either close or open the said drainhole, as the temperature of the weather' may require.
Referring to the drawing, (which is a central vertical section of the attachment applied,) A B is the pump; C D, the platform, over a well, indicated by the faint lines e c', and E, the valve.
Through one side of the pump A B, at about a foot, more or less, below the platform C D, a drain-hole, a, is bored to the interior, and over the outside of the hole, the disk of the Valve E, which forms also the lower end of the lever e', is fitted, so that when pressed directly against the pump-stock, it will prevent the passage of water from the pump out through the hole a.
The lever e passes up through a slot in the platform O D, and turns upon a fulcrum-pin secured in a bearing, e", which is fixed to the pump-stock at a short distance above the platform C D, the power-end of the lever e extending upward one and a half, or two feet,
more or less, and having articulated to its extreme end, a pointed pawl-catch, e, whereby the valve-disk E, at the lower end of the lever e', can be held water-tight over the hole which it covers, as shown in the drawing, or released therefrom, as indicated by the dotted lines, by the operator of the pump, as occasion may, from time to time require;
It will be seen, that when the valve-disk E is kept closed over .the drain-hole c', by the pressure of the pawl-catch e, between the pump-stock A B and the upper end of the lever e', the water in the pump will be retained at the height of the usual spout, b; but when the operator disconnects the upper end of the lever e from the pump-stock, by dropping the point end of the pawl-catch c', that the water in the pump, above the drain-hole a', will force open the valve, and run out into the well; and that, as the said drain-hole is within the well,or below the covering platform 0 1),
the freezing up of the pump in winter weather, as heretofme, can be effectually avoided.
I am aware that a spring, slide-valve, and seat, have been constructed and applied to a pump, for the same purpose, and described in the patent of Edward A. Floyd, July 4, 1865; but my device has advantages, and can be made with facility' by any ordinary blacksmith, and at a trilling cost, and can be easily repaired and kept in order by almost any laborer about a farm or country place, the places where well-pumps are almost invariably used.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is conned to the following, viz
In combination with a well-pump, A B, and the platform, O D, of the well, I claim the lever e', together with its pawl-catch e, the same being applied, arranged, and operated as and for the purpose shown and described.
JOHN H. BROWN.
