Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: f g, I Be it known that I, AsiIER LAMBERT, a resident of Newark, Essex county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fall-Rope Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invei'ition relates to conveyers or (able ways for hoisting and conveying.
The object of this invention is to provide a slow speed rope carrier which is simpler, more certain in operation and. less liable to derangement than any heretofore known or used. In conveyers of this character it is desirableaml necessary to support the flexible ropes employed from the main cable or track-way so to prevent sagging and interru )tion to the successful movement of the carrier, and so as to permit the raising and. lowering of the load or bucket, whether filled. or empty at any point between the terminal stations. Each carrier should be automatically movable at a'predetermined. and. characteristic rate so as to maintain the proper space or distance between successive carriers of a series. To attain this object each carrier is provided with a propelling device or element including a grooved wheel, sheave or pulley; this propelling device en gages the under-side of the main track or cable and the upper side of the endless haul rope; the track, the propelling device and. the haul rope arein one and the same vertical plane, and the effort of the haul rope has a tendency to force the propelling device into engagement with the main track; this steadies the carriers and prevents wabbling. 1 provide for forcing the haul rope into engagement with the propelling device by means additional to the haul rope as described. Tliis consists in the employment of an adjustable spring and suitable connecting device.
My improvement herein described and particularly claimed consists of a quarter speedv rope carrier, that is, a rope carrier which moves at one-quarter the speed of the load carriage. Other rope carriers should be provided to travel at one-half speed. and at three-quarter speed.
i" provide a track rope of large diameter and a haul rope of small diameter; the propelling device of the rope carrier consists of a wheel having two flanges. This wheel is located on a support of large diameter and has ball bearings on fixed disks; the propelling wheel has a series of interior gear teeth. A second wheel is provided to be engaged by the haul rope; it is located between the flanges of the first named wheel and it has two hubs which are cogged or toothed and engage the interior teeth of the propelling wheel.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention V Figure 1. is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail view partly in section showing the propelling wheel, its ball bearing support, its interior tooth engaging 'surface and the driving wheel with its cogged hubs.
The track rope is shown at 12, the haul rope at 14, the hoist rope at 16 is supported on a sheave 20 in the frame 19; these ropes all pass between the cheek plates of the frame 19 suitably bolted together and spaced at a fixed distance; wheels or sheaves 21 fixed in the frame 19 travel on the track 12, the propelling device (I engages the under side of the track 12 it is geared with a grooved wheel e which engages the haul rope 14. The sheave 22 is supported in the frame f and there is a toggle jointed adjusting device composed of the links if and a hinged together at 34; link if is pivoted at 36 to the frame f, link a is pivoted at 35 to the frame 19. The screw bolt Q is connected to the bolt 34. The spring 5 on the bolt (1 is between the plate p fixed to the framef an d the washer 1- on the bolt g. The pull exerted. by the spring 3 is controlled by the nutn and the check nut n. The operation of this adjusting device is to force the frame f upward and the frame 19 downward. This causes the wheels 21 in frame 19 to approach the sheave 22 in frame f and forces the haul rope 14 into working engagement with. the sheave e and the propelling device (Z into engagement with track 12.
The propelling device consists of two disks 40 and 41 fast on the bolts 42 and 43; the periphery of the disks 40 and 41 and the adjacent contact surfaces of the flanges and 51 aregrooved as shown at 44 to provide for the ball bearings 45. These flanges 50 and. 51 are suitably spaced, and have arc-shaped. faces to engage with the track 12. These flanges rotate on. the disks 40 and 41 and are provided with ball bearings to decrease the friction in a manner well understood. The adjacent faces of these flanges are provided with interior gear teeth 9. The sheave e is on a shaft fixed in the disks 40 and 41. The sheave 0 has hubs provided with gear teeth meshing with the gear teeth gin flanges 50 and 51. The number of teeth on the hubs it bears such a relation to the gear teeth g on the flanges that when the wheel e is rotated by the advance of the haul rope 14 the progressive movement of the rope carrier is one-quarter the speed of the haul rope. While the shafts 42, 43 and are fixed in the disks 40 and 41, they project through slots in the frames 19 and f and the entire propelling device including the sheave c floats or moves freely up and down between the ropes 12 and 14. The shaft 32 supporting the. wheel 22 is clamped in the frame The apertures 71 in frames f and 19, through which the shaft passes, are elongated to afford means for adjustment up or down.
The operation is as follows: The haul rope 14 advances with the load carriage as it tightens under the strain of the. propelling engine it exerts an upward thrust upon the underside of the sheave e and forces the propelling device cl into engagement with the track 12. In addition to this the adjusting device controlled by the spring 8 operates in the same sense and the grooved wheel 22 presses the rope 14 against the sheave e, and the propelling device cl against the under side of the track 12 as the rope 14 is drawn along it rotates the sheave e which through its gearing properly proportioned as described imparts a movement to the propelling device (Z which travels on the track 12 at one-quarter the speed of the haul rope 14. The hoist rope or fall rope 16 is carried and supported on the pulley 20.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a conveyer system, a rope carrier consisting of a frame or support, a wheel or sheave having two separated flanges to engage the track; a circular row of interior teeth on said wheel, a Wheel or sheave located between the flanges of the first wheel to engage the haul rope toothed hubs for said. wheel engaging the interior teeth of the first wheel and means for independently supporting said wheels in said frame.
2. In a conveyer system a rope carrier con sisting of a frame or support, a wheel or sheave having two deep, separated flanges to engage the track, a circular row of interior teeth for each flange on said wheel, a wheel or sheave located between the flanges of the first wheel to engage the haul rope,
toothed hubs for said wheel meshing with the teeth on the flanged wheel and means for independently supporting the said wheels in said frame.
3. In a conveyer system a rope carrier consisting of a frame or support, a wheel or sheave having two deep, separated flanges, a circular row of interior teeth for each flange, two disks forming fixed bearings for said flanges, a wheel or sheave located between the said flanges having a radius shorter than the radius of said disks and cog gearing for said wheel engaging the rows of interior teeth in the flanges.
4. In a conveyer system a rope carrier having a frame or support combined with. a propelling device consisting of a pair of fixed, separated disks, a rotating flange on each disk, said flanges engaging the track, a grooved wheel engaging the haul rope, said wheel being located between said flanges, and cog gearing connecting said wheel and said flanges.
5. In a conveyer system a rope carrier having a frame or support combined with a propelling device consisting of a pair of fixed, separated disks, a rotating flange on each disk, said flanges en aging the track, a grooved wheel of shorter radius than said disks and cog gearing connecting said wheel and flanges.
6. In a conveyer system a rope carrier having a frame or support combined with a propelling device consisting of a pair of fixed separate disks, a rotating flange on each disk, said flanges-engaging the track, a grooved wheel engaging the haul rope, located between said flanges; gearing connecting said wheel and flanges, and means for positively forcing said device, wheel and ropes into operative engagement.
