AROHIBALD GRANT SNOWDON, OF WESTMOUNT, QUEBEC, CANADA.
CAN-OPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD GRANT SNownoN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, resident of 133 Irvine avenue, in the town of Westmount, in the district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The invention relates to im rovements in can openers, and the objects 0 the invention are to facilitate the production of parts in quantities and the assembling thereof, to devise a durable form of construction and to provide a can opener in which many of the parts may be readily replaced and particularly those parts most seriously affected in the operation of the device, and it consists essentially of a member adapted to form a common holder for the lever portions of the device and the knife, the preferable arrangement and construction being described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the can opener complete, showing the pivot lever partially withdrawn. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the underside of the device closed. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional perspective view through the common holder. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the common holder. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail of another form of handle.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In articles, such as can'openers, for which there is almost a universal demand, the chief feature of interest to the public and to the manufacturer is the cost of production and while many of such utensils may be very efficient in operation, the production of such in quantities with good material employed is often a bar to the articles reaching the public, and in the present invention, these difficulties have been overcome and the very best material may be used in the parts most affected by operation without materially in creasing the cost.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the handle here shown as open on the underside and having the channels 2 along each of its longitudinal under sides, though it must be understood that this handle may be formed different, that is, completely closed on its under Specification of Letters Patent.

side and closed at one end instead of open at both ends as shown without affecting the purpose of this invention, this form of handle being particularly illustrated in Fig. 5.
3 is a pivot lever formed correspondingly with the inner dimensions of the handle 1 and sliding therein in the channels 2 and having the longitudinal slot 4 therethrough for the greater part of its length and the piercing point 5 formed by the off-set 6' from its front end. The construction of the said pivot lever 3 may be modified to suit any changes of construction in the other parts.
7 is the bracket or common holder here shown as substantially U-shape though this particular shape is not essential to the proper working out of the invention, but for sunplicity of construction it is the preferable form.
8 are slots in the bracket 7 towards the side edges thereof and in alinement one with the other and in size corresponding to the outside measurements of the said handle 1, said handle being inserted through said slots at its front end. 9 are slots towards the other side edges of the bracket 7 and of smaller dimensions than the said slots 8 and preferably in alinement one with the other. The arrangement of said slots in the said bracket or common holder may be changed or said slots may be omitted and other means adopted to suit the particular style of can opener, though the form shown is the preferable construction.
10 is a knife having a centrally threaded orifice 11 through the body portion 12 thereof, the said body portion 12 being inserted in the slots 9. The blade ortion 13 converges to a point and extends forward and beyond the bracket or common holder 7.
14 is a screw inserted through the orifice 15 at the front end of the handle 1 and through the slot 4 in the pivoted lever 3 and reaching downwardly into the threaded orifice 11 and forming with said bracket or common holder 7, the means for securing said knife to said handle.
In order to open a can with this opener, the top wall of the can is pierced in the center by forcing the piercing point 5 therethrough. The handle is then drawn along said lever beyond the side walls of the can, until the knife blade 13 is clear of said side wall, then the handle is depressed and pushed inwardly until the point of said blade pierces the side wall of the can. The blade is then forced inwardly, until it has entered the said side wall and/the handle drawn around the can always pushing inwardly to retain the engagemerit of said knife blade with said wall; In
this manner the top of the can is completelyv j cutoff flQLVlIlgit clean top edge asthe knife .blade in sharpening is beveled from the upper side and therefore rolls the tin of the side wall inwardly,
What I'olaim as my invention is: 1. A can opener, comprising a handle, a bar sliding therein and having a piercing 1 point at its front end, a suitable cutting edge,
a member forming a common holder having said handle rigldly secured thereto and extendlng rearwardly therefrom and said cutting .edge extending therefrom below said handl'e and rigidly secured and means for se curing the aforesaid parts in said holder, substantially as described.
2. A can opener, comprising a handle, a bar having a piercing point at its front end i: andfsliding in said handle, a slotted bracket 3 a knife blade having a suitable cutting edge,
a bracket supporting said handle, bar and knife blade, and a pin extending through said handle and through said longitudinal slot and securing said knife and handle together, substantially as described.
4. A can opener, comprising a handle having a closed top, an open underside, longitudinal channels formed at each side thereof and an orifice therethrough adjacent to its front end, a bar having a suitable piercing point at its front end and longitudinal slot 'therethrough for the greater portion of its.
length and sliding in said channels, aknife blade having a centrally threaded orifice in its body portion and a blade portion converging to a point, a bracket substantially U-shaped and having slots in alinementin the sides corresponding in dimensions to the outside measurements of said handle and receiving the front end of said handle, and slots in alinement in the sides corresponding in dimensions to the measurements of the body portion of said knife and receiving said body portion, and a screw inserted through said orifice in the handle between the sides of said bracket and reaching into said threaded orifice in said knife and holding said knife securely to said handle, substantially as described.
Signed at the city of Montreal, in the district of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, this 13th day of August 1907.
