6 Mom NELSON D. WELLS, OF OOPEMISH, MICHIGAN.
DOOR-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1908.
Application filed June 4, 1907. Serial No. 377,216.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NELSON D. WELLs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Copemish, in the county of Manistee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-H angers, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved hanger for barn doors and other sliding doors and comprises in connection with a housing having a Wheel for traveling on a supporting track, a member for attachment to a door, and a U- shaped connecting bolt or member pivotally connected to such door member and connected to such housing for vertical adjustment, to enable the door to be swung laterally and to also enable the door to be adjusted vertically as may be required to cause the same to hang level, as hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing,Figure 1 is an elevation showing the inner side of a door hanger embodying my invention, a portion of the supporting track and a portion of a door being also indicated. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
The housing 1 has a hood 2 formed at its upper end which overhangs and incloses the upper portion of the peripherally grooved wheel or pulley 3 which travels on the usual supporting track 4 and has its bearing in the outer and inner sides of said housing, as at 5. The said housing serves to protect the said wheel or pulley from rain and hence serves to prevent the same from corroding. The housing is formed at its lower end with an arm 6 which is parallel with the track rail and below the same and extends beyond opposite sides of the vertical intermediate portion 7 of the housing. On the inner side of the said arm at the center of the same is an upwardly extending tongue 8, the upper portion of which extends above the plane of the lower edge of the track rail and serves to form a guard to prevent the grooved wheel from jumping the track, as will be understood.
The door member 9 is an inverted U- shaped strap adapted to be placed astride the upper edge of the door and to be secured to the door by belts or other suitable devices which pass through openings in the arms of the said strap and in the door. The upper, arched, central portion 11 of the door member is contracted in width to form an opening, open on its lower side, for the reception of the horizontal central portion 12 of a U- shaped connecting bolt 13, the vertical arms 14 of which pass through openings in the ends of the arm 6 of the housing or wheel member and are provided with adjusting and supporting nuts 15 which bear on the upper side of such arm, near the ends thereof. Such vertical arms of the connecting bolt are screw threaded for engagement by the threads of the openings in the nuts, and by turning such nuts the said connecting bolt may be adjusted vertically with respect to the housing or wheel member to correspondingly adjust the door member and hence also that portion of the door to which such member is secured.
It will be understood that by thus adjusting the connecting bolt the door may be so adjusted as to cause the same to hang with its side edges perfectly plumb under all conditions regardless of whether the track is absolutely level or not. Furthermore, it will be understood that the said adjustable connecting bolt forms with the door member a hinge which enables the door to be swung laterally.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A door hanger of the class described comprising a member having a wheel mounted in the upper portion thereof for engagement with a supporting track and further provided at its lower end with an integral cross arm said cross arm having an upwardly extending tongue to bear against one side of the track,
a U-shaped connecting bolt having its vertical arms screw-threaded andpassed through openings in the ends of the cross arm, adusting nuts on said arms and adapted to bear on said cross arms, and a door member pivotally engaged with the horizontal central portion of such connecting bolt.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
