Description

No. 888,909. PATENTED MAY 26, 1908. A. KNOX.
APPARATUS FOR COOLING CYLINDERS 0F GAS ENGINES.
APPLICATION FILED SBPTJI. 1906.
Al'lfizmej ARTHUR KNOX, OF ALPENA, SOUTH DAKOTA.
APPARATUS FOR COOLING CYLINDERS OF GAS-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26,
Application file d. September 11, 1906. Serial No. 334,162.
I -To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that-I, ARTHUR Knox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alpena,
- in the county of Jerauld and-State" of South Dakota, have invented certain new and usefullimprovements in Apparatus for Cooling Cylinders of Gas-Engines; and I do'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters and figuresof reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cooling apparatus for engines, and comprises series of disks which are adapted to be mounted to rotate with a tank and in the water of circulation about a cylinder of an engine, thereby causing the water as it circulates through the tank to present a large area of cooling surface.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arran ements of parts which will be hereinafter fu ly described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompa nying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical section through a cylinder, illustrating my invention; and Fig. 2 is a topplan view. I
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the cylinder of an engine about which a water jacket B is formed, through which water is caused to circulate in any suitable manner.
C designates a dr ving wheel which 1s mounted upon gas engine crank shaft D, and- D' desi nates a crank arm to said shaft and to whic one end of pitman rod- E is pivotally attached, the other end of said-rod being pivoted to the piston of the engine.
F desi nates a tank which is open at its top and. as anexhaust pi e'G leading into the exit passageway H. aid exhaust pipe G leads from one end of the cylinder to said exhaust passage. N designates a shaft mounted in suitable bearings, and O, O dcsi ate a series of disks which are fixed to the siaft N and adapted to be rotated within said tank F. --A band wheel Q. is fixed to the end of the shaft N, and a second band wheel Q is fixed to rotate with the shaft D. A band B travels about said band wheels and is adapted to impart a rotary movement to the shaft N with which said disks rotate.
The operation of my apparatus is simple and is as follows: As the water circulates about'the engine in any suitable manner and flows through the tank F, the rotary movement of the disk is caused to bring the Water about the oppositefaces of the disk, thus serving to cool the same, whil'e air is drawn into the tank by the suction caused by the exhaust and coming in contact with the" water will further cause the same to cool After the Water has been cooled by means of u the disks, it continues on its circulating course about the cylinder.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that by the provision of the apparatus shown and described, a simpler and eflicient meansjis afforded for causing the ihater which circulates about the. cylinder to ing up the heatwhich is absorbed from the cylinder and causing the same to be carried off by the draft of air which is drawn through the tank by the action of the exe broughtfinto contact with large radiating surfaces, thus takhaust, thereby keeping the water at a corn- Iv flue and through. said duct from the interior of/the cylinder through the water jacket, a
shaft j ournaled in said tank, a series of disks spaced apart and fixed to said shaft, and means for rotating the shaft, as set forth.
In. testimonywhereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR KNOX. iVitncsses: RAY BARBER,
MASON SMlTH.
