Specification of Letters Patent.

To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND PHILIPS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sheet- Metal Pulley Construction, of which the following is a true and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which forni a part thereof.
My invention relates to sheet metal pulleys and has for its object to provide for stiffening and strengthening the union between the rim and the spokes which in ulleys of this class has been found very like y to be weak.
Generally speaking, my invention consists in inserting between the inwardly extending flanges of sheet metal to which the spokes are secured a ring of metal which not only adds its own strength to that of the sheet metal fianges, but also stifliens and strengthens the flange as a whole owing to the separation of the sheet metal flanges. By preference the outer edge of this inserted ring, of metal is enlarged and formed with fillets which serve to support and give proper form to the fillets formed between the sheet metal forming a part of the rim proper and that portion of the metal which is turned inward to form the flange.
Reference is now had to the drawings which illustrate my invention and in which Figure l, is a side view of a pulley of the general character to which my invention is adapted to be applied. Fig. 2, is a crosssectlon taken as on the line 2-2, of Fig. l, and Figs. 3, 4 and 5, similar cross-sections showing modifications in the form and character of the inserted metal ring.
A indicates the outer surface of the sheet metal pulley which, as shown, is a two-ply pulley, the under thickness of the sheet metal being indicated at B, and the flange edges of the pulley at O O. At E, E, the under plies B, of the pulley rim are bent in to form the flanges D, D, these flanges not being brought together but contacting with a central metallic ring F the periphery of which bears against the outer ply of the rim, and which, by preference, is formed with an enlarged head F', lilleted at F2, F2, the fillets or curves E, E, contacting with the fillets of the ring as shown.
G, G, etc.,are inserted metal pieces'abutted against the flange of the rim and to which as Well as to the flange the spokes H, H, of the pulley are secured as by rivets I, I and I2.
J indicates the hub of the pulley to which the inner end of the spokes are secured.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, the inserted ring of metal indicated at F3, is shown as being made by folding sheet metal into the general form of the inserted ring F, of Fig. 2.
In Fig. 4, the inserted ring, here indicated at F4 is made of two sections F5, F5, of metal abutted against each other and with their upper ends curved ,outward to form the fillets F2, while in Fig. 5, the inserted ring, here indicated at F6, is a plain rectangular bar of metal without enlarged head or fillets.
By preference the sheet metal of the rim while still straight is brought to the crosssectional form shown in Fig. 2, and a straight bar of the cross section of the bar F inserted between the inwardly bent flanges, and then the rim and inserted bar bent or curved to semi-circular shape so as to form one-half of a pulley rim, the bending being preferably accomplished by mechanism such as is described in my prior patent No. 651,053 of June 5th, 1900.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. A sheet metal pulley rim having a sheet metal rim portion pro er consisting of an outer ply of sheet meta and an inner ply of sheet metal bearing against the inner surface of the outer ly, and a fiange portion consisting of radially in-turned portions of the inner ply, and a metal ring interposed between and in close contact with said inturned ortions, and bearing against the inner surface of the outer ply.
2. A sheet metal pulley rim having an outer rim ply of sheet metal, an inner rim ply bearing against the outer ply and consisting of portions of the outer ply material doubled back, and an internal flange or web consisting of inturned portions of the inner ply and made and in close Contact therewith an ina reinforcing ring interposed between and in ter-posed ring of metal having its outer edge close Contact With said inturned portions and enlarged and formed with i'illets F2, F2.
