"TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM PERSON, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGN OR TO ROCKFORD CABINET COMPANY,
OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
FURNITURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1908.
Application filed December 18, 1905. Serial No. 292,230.
To all whom "it may concern:
;,- Be it known that I, WVILLIAM PERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct an article of furniture provided with a series of drawers in which the meeting rail located between the drawers is placed some distance back from the face of the drawers which will present only the division between the drawers.
The further object of this invention is to locate the guides for the drawersagainst the inner face of the depending sides of the drawer, thereby insuring a close lit.
The further object of this invention is to look some of the drawers to the meeting rails by the employment of a metallic plate connected to each meeting rail and having an opening within which the bolt of the lock is inserted.
The further object of this invention is to lock the upper large drawer to the vertical division piece separating the two smaller drawers.
In the accompanying drawings. Figure 1 is a perspective View of an'article of furniture containing my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section showing the guides for the drawers.
The article of furniture herein shown comprises the base 1, ends 2, back 3 and top 4 joined together in the usual manner.
In the article of furniture shown, two drawers (only one of which is shown) are located in the upper portion above the meeting rail 6 and are held separated by the vertical division piece 7. The balance of the space below the two drawers, in this instance is divided for the reception of four drawers 8 only two however being shown, the others being removed to show the inner construction.
The meeting rails 9 are located between the drawers 8 and some distance back from the front of the drawers. The fronts of the drawers extend down over the meeting rails close to the upper edge of the front of the drawer beneath them, so that the meeting rails are held from View when the drawers are closed.
Heretofore it has been very dihicult to so secure the guides for the drawers as to closely fit the sides of the drawers. I overcome this difiiculty by placing the guides 10 for the drawers against the inner faces of the depending sides of the drawers. This is easily accomplished by first locating the drawer so that a clearance will be had between its sides and the case proper, the guides are then glued to their supports 11 while the drawer is still in position in the case, this can be done by reaching under the drawer. The guides are also located so that their outer ends will come in contact with the drawer and form stops to the inward movement of the drawer.
The upper large drawer 8 is provided with a lock and its bolt 12 enters a recess 13 in the under edge of the outer end of the vertical division piece 7 separating the two smaller drawers. The other larger drawers are locked to the meeting rails by the bolts 14 of the locks passing through openings 15 in the metallic plates 16 secured to the meeting rails. As .the meeting rails are above the drawers the metallic plates are turned down to reach the drawer.
I claim as my invention.
An article of furniture com )osed of drawers having their meeting rail s between the drawers located back of the front face of the drawers, a lock carried by each drawer and a plate secured to and projecting forward from each meeting rail, said plate having an opening at or near its free end, with whichthe lock-bolt engages.
WILLIAM PERSON.
