To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUY H. CRAWFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Darning Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in darning devices or machines and more par ticularly to a work holder which may be conveniently operated by hand under the needle of an ordinary sewing machine.

Theobject of the invention is to provide a work holder or darning last. of this character which will be simple, strong and durable, which may be readily inserted beneath the needle and presser foot of any two thread sewing machine and manipulated by hand to adjust the work held by it, which will enable the work to be easily adjusted upon it and readily applied to or removed from it and which will allow a clear and unobstructed view of the article or work being darned and at the same time effectively hold the same with an even tension at all points.

\Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the darning device; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view; Fig. 3 is a top plan view; and Fig. 4 is a detail section taken on the plane indicated by the line A-B in Fig. 3.

My improved darning device or work holder comprises a plurality of upwardly and outwardly projecting arms a arranged at intervals around the upper edge and open body I) from the bottom edge of which latter projects outwardly a horizontal flange 0 having its edge notched or serrated to provide teeth (Z. The open body I) may be of any suitable size and shape but I preferably make it elliptical or egg shaped as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. It may also be of any thickness or height but I preferably make it comparatively narrow so that it may be readily inserted beneath the needle and presser foot of an ordinary two thread sewing machine. The arms a are preferably, but not necessarily, curved upwardly and outwardly as shown and serve to support the work or article held by the darner and also as a means whereby it may be readily manipulated upon the bed-plate of a sewing machine. ld hile any suitable means may be provided upon the bottom edge of the body I) for engaging and holding the work or article that is stretched over its bottom, I preferably provide a continuous series of teeth d by notohing or serrating the outer edge of the continuous horizontal flange 0 as shown. By providing a continuous series of teeth it will be seen that the work will be engaged and held at all points around the bottom of the body and therefore be held with an even tension and may be quickly and easily adjusted at any point; and the work may also be readily applied to and removed from the darner without danger of tearing the same.

In practice, I prefer to make the darner from a single piece of sheet metal and I do so by bending a strip upon itself and uniting its overlapping ends by rivets or similar fastenings e and by forming the arms a integral with the upper edge of the strip or body and the flange 0 integral with the lower or bottom edge of the same as clearly shown in the drawings. By constructing the darner in this manner it will be seen that it will be comparatively inexpensive to produce, that it will be exceedingly strong and durable, and that it has no movable parts which call for adjustment and which are liable to get out of order.

In use, the work or article to be darned is stretched over the horizontal flange 0 or bottom of the body I) and engaged with the teeth at so that it will be firmly held with an equal tension at all points, and its free portions are then caught upon the arms a which latter are slightly resilient. The darner with the work thereon is then inserted beneath the needle and presser foot of a sewing machine and may be readily manipulated upon the bed-plate of the machine in the operation of darning the hole in the work or otherwise operating upon the work. Owing to the peculiar construction of the darner it will be seen that the work may be quickly and easily applied to or removed from it and as readily adjusted upon it; that it permits of a plain and unobstructed view of the work or article being darned and also permits of the darning of a comparatively large hole without readjusting the work on the darner or removing of the advantages of the invention.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. A device of the character described, comprising an open body having a continuous series of work engaging teeth arranged around its bottom.

2. A device of the character described, comprising an open body, means upon its bottom to engage the work and upwardly and outwardly projecting resilient arms upon its top to engage and support the work.

-3. A device of the character described, comprising an open body, a continuous series of work engaging teeth arranged around the bottom of the same and a plurality of upwardly and outwardly projecting stationary arms arranged at intervals around the top of the body.

5. The herein described darning device,

formed from a single piece of sheet metal and comprising a strip bent upon itself to provide an open body and having its overlapping ends united, a continuous horizontal flange formed by bending the bottom edge of the, L

body or strip outwardly, said flange having its outer edge notched to provide a 0011- tinuous series of work engaging teeth, and outwardly and upwardly projecting arms formed integral with the upper edge of the body at intervals around the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
