To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. BOYNTON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of a saw set which is simple in construction, embraces comparatively few parts, and is very eflicient in operation.
With the above and other objects in View, to be referred to hereinafter, the invention consists of the construction, arrangement and combinations of parts herein to be described and succinctly defined in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my invention, portions of one of the gages being broken away. Fig. 2 is a view in top plan thereof with the head, which carries the punches, removed, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the said head inverted.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a frame consisting of an anvil 1., which as now considered forms the base of the device, and an upright 2, the latter comprising parallel side portions between which the base is removably secured, as by bolts 3, or the like.
The side portions of the upright are joined at their upper ends by a cross piece 2 and provided at their lower end portions with outwardly projecting apertured lugs 4 through which bolts or the like can be passed for firmly securing the saw set to a suitable support.
Mounted over the anvil 1, is a head 5 carrying a plurality of punches, as 5 and 5 of different sizes for use in operating upon fine and coarse saw teeth respectively. As herein shown, the head 5 consists of a metal bar swingingly mounted between the side portions of upright 2 on a bolt 6 and having its opposite end portions each suitably formed to provide a respective one of said punches, and said bolt is slidably engaged in suitable apertures provided in said bar and side portions or pieces of the upright so that it can be removed when desired to adjust the bar to present the required punch directly over the active face, as 1 of the anvil. Head 5 is yieldingly held in retracted position relatively to said active face of the anvil, by means of a flat spring 6 secured to the anvil and having its free end portion engaged with the forward end portion of the bar.
Reference numeral 7 indicates a rest for the saw, the same being pivoted to the anvil 1, as at 8, so that it may be given angular adjustment relatively to the active face of the anvil in conformity with the set it is desired to impart to the saw teeth. The saw rest is provided with a slotted lug 9 through which a bolt 10, mounted in the anvil, projects and on the projecting screw threaded end portion of said bolt is a nut 9, the same when properly adjusted pressing said lug firmly against the anvil and thereby securing the saw rest in its adjusted position.
Reference numeral 11 designates gages disposed at opposite sides of the active face of anvil 1 and having shanks 12 adjustably secured each to its respective side surface of said anvil by means of clamping bolts 12,
said bolts passing through the anvil and projecting through suitable slots in said shanks so that the gages can be adjusted, in accordance with the length of the saw teeth to be operated upon, when said bolts are loosened.
The shanks 12 project above the anvil and embrace the head 5 so as to guide the same and thereby insure alinement of the active punch with the saw tooth.
In operation, the saw rest 7 and the gages 11 are first properly adjusted, as heretofore described, and the saw then firmly held on said rest with one ,of its teeth beneath punch 5 and the points of adjacent teeth resting against said gages. A blow is now delivered to head 5, above punch 5 so as to cause the latter to force the underlying saw tooth down upon the active face of the anvil, thereby setting the tooth. Spring 6 now retracts the head and the saw is shifted to present another tooth for impact of the punch.
If it is desired to use punch 5, bolt 6 is removed and the head 5 taken from the upright 2 and remounted therein in a reverse position, thereby bringing said punch directly over the active face of the anvil.
In the present construction, the active face of anvil 1 is incorporated in a block 14 removably seated in a slot provided in said anvil and clamped between the shanks 12 which serve to prevent displacement of the block while permitting of its ready replacement when worn, by loosening bolts 12 and removing one of the shanks.
Various changes can be made in the details of construction Without de arting from the spirit of my invention, as efined in the appended claims, and, as is obvious if desired, an anvil having an integral active face can be substituted for that herein shown.

In a device of the type set forth, an upright of open form, an anvil secured therein, said upright having outwardly projecting lugs on its lower portions, a head reinovably pivoted in said upright above said anvil and provided on its inner end ortion With a 15 punch, and means for norma ly holding the inner end portion of said head elevated.
