One of the ofijects of this invention is to overcome the above defined difficulty by roviding a simple and efiiciently operating I form of adjusting means adapted to be so positioned as to not interfere with this operation.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully del scribed and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.

From the construction illustrated and defined, it will be perceived that the cross rods and thumb nuts, nowcommonly employed for adjusting the legs and which frequently interfere with the operation, are dispensed with, and a simple and efficiently operating form of adjusting means substituted, which is so positioned as to be entirely out of the way at all times.

Having thus described the nature of my secure by Letters-Patent, is: I

In a pair of cali ers or dividers, the legs of which are forme at their inner ends with flat inwardly inclined ends and with op positely disposed sockets in their inner edges near said ends, of a curved spring, the ends of the spring being attached to the inner or inclined ends of the caliper or divider legs, a'thumb-piece extending through the body of the spring, a longitudinally disposed screwthreaded stem attached at its outer end to the thumb-piece, the inner end of the stem extending between the inner ends of the caliper or divider legs, a disk fixed to the inner end of the stem, the periphery of the disk fitting in the sockets of the caliper or divider legs, and constituting a pivot for the inner ends of the same, a sliding block having flat oppositely disposed inwardly inclined side edges to engage those of the inner the legs, thumb-piece and spring of a pair of calipers constructed in accordance with the invention, the tendency of the spring being to maintain the legs in a closed position.
