CALIPERS AND DIVIDERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
No. 888,498. Patented May 26 1908.
Application filed November 14, 1907. Serial N 0. 402,172.
function being to guide or preventlateral displacement of such legs during the operation of taking measurements.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ADOLPH F. HENRIK- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and In carrying out the invention, the inner State of New York, have invented certain ends of the'divider or caliper legs are inclined new and useful Improvements in Calipers inwardly, as at 7, and a V-shaped block or and Dividers; and I do declare the following member 8, is mounted for longitudinal moveto be afull, clear, and exact description of ment on said screw or stem, the inclined edges the invention, such as will enable others of said block or member being of a somewhat skilled in the art to which it appertains to less inclination than that of the ends of the make and use the same. divider or caliper legs.
This invention relates to new and useful An adjusting nut 9 is mounted on the improvements in dividers and calipers of that screw or stem for causing the block or member to slide inwardly and close the legs up. I Said legs are provided with longitudinal urements. It has been found by experience sockets 10 in their outer ends for the recepthat dividers and calipers em loying such tion of the divider or caliper points 11 and form of adjusting means are objectionable, 12, respectively, the ends of the legs being because of the fact that the cross rods interslotted longitudinally as at 13 and having fere with this 0 eration.
One of the ofijects of this invention is to overcome the above defined difficulty by roviding a simple and efiiciently operating I form of adjusting means adapted to be so positioned as to not interfere with this operation.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully del scribed and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.
n the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view of a pair of dividers and calipers constructed in accordance with the invention, one of the clam ing sleeves or members for holding the divid drs or calipers oints in position, removed; Fig. 2 is a side e evation; Fig. 3 is a vertical section; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the calipers points.
Referring to the drawings, which are for illustrative purposes only, and therefore are I not drawn to any particular scale. The numerals 1, 2 and 3 indicate, respectively, I
relied upon.for adjustment in taking measportions for the reception of clamping sleeves, 15, which when screwed in position, press the slotted portion of the legs against the divider or caliper points, as the case may be, and secure them in position.
From the construction illustrated and defined, it will be perceived that the cross rods and thumb nuts, nowcommonly employed for adjusting the legs and which frequently interfere with the operation, are dispensed with, and a simple and efficiently operating form of adjusting means substituted, which is so positioned as to be entirely out of the way at all times.
Having thus described the nature of my secure by Letters-Patent, is: I
In a pair of cali ers or dividers, the legs of which are forme at their inner ends with flat inwardly inclined ends and with op positely disposed sockets in their inner edges near said ends, of a curved spring, the ends of the spring being attached to the inner or inclined ends of the caliper or divider legs, a'thumb-piece extending through the body of the spring, a longitudinally disposed screwthreaded stem attached at its outer end to the thumb-piece, the inner end of the stem extending between the inner ends of the caliper or divider legs, a disk fixed to the inner end of the stem, the periphery of the disk fitting in the sockets of the caliper or divider legs, and constituting a pivot for the inner ends of the same, a sliding block having flat oppositely disposed inwardly inclined side edges to engage those of the inner the legs, thumb-piece and spring of a pair of calipers constructed in accordance with the invention, the tendency of the spring being to maintain the legs in a closed position. A longitudinally disposed screw-threaded stem 4 is fixed at its outer end to the thumb-piece and is arranged to extend inwardly between the inner end of the divider or caliper legs and is fixed to a disk 5, said disk fitting in corresponding sockets 6, formed in the inner edges of the divider or caliper legs and its threads 14 at the inner ends of their slotted invention, what I claim as new and desire to ends of the caliper or divider legs mounted In testimony whereof I have hereunto set to slide on the stem, and an adjusting nut my hand in presence of two subscribing wit rotatably mounted on the stem between the nesses.
