' class which ARTHUR ATRISS AND DAVID CARSON, OF PllIhADEllPl'llA. PENNSYLVANIA.
DENTAL PLUGGER.
Application filed October 17,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Airmen Airiuss and l I)AVID C. CARSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennl sylvania, have invented certain new and l useful Improvements in a Dental Plugger, of l which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dental pluggers or mallets, and particularly to that class adapted to be operated by the flexible shaft of a dental engine for the pur pose of delivering a rapid succession of blows, l of greater or less intensity, against the filling l in a dental cavity by the plugging tool conl nected with the lllStZLU'llGIlt. V l The object of the invention is, to provide a simple and effective implement of this character which may be easily operated and in which the operator may regulate the in- 1 tensity of the blow to suit the purpose. Second, to provide an implement of this,
by reason of its peculiar design is preferably adapted to certain classes of dental work by reason of the axis of the plugger being offset from that of the axis of the dental engine hand-piece. Third, to rovide means in such an implement whereby l the length of the stroke, and hence the intensity of the blow may be regulated with the greatest possible ease and without ceasing the operation of the tool. These and other objects are attained by the novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described and shown in the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure 1, represents a longitudinal section of the operative portion of the implement. Fig. 2, is a side elevational view of the plugger in a different position from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a transverse section taken on line (t(b, of Fig. 1. Fig. 4, is an enlarged sectional view of the means used in governing the intensity of the blow, and, Fig. 1 5, is a plan view showing a detail of the said means.
Similar characters of reference are used throughout the several views to designate the same part wherever shown.
In the drawings the handle 1, is preferably knurled or corrugated so that it will not slip in the grasp of the operator and is recessed for the entrance of the hand-piece attached to the end of the flexible shaft of the dental engine; the said hand-piecenot shown engaging with the rod 2, for the purpose of Specification of Letters Patent.
I commonicating rotation thereto as Patented May 26, 1908.

usual in such mechanisms.
The rod or shaft 2, is journaled ina hearing in the inner end of the handle ,1, and at its inner end beyond the hearing has mounted thereon a spur gear 3, adapted to mesh with the duplicate gear 4, housed in the frame 1, oll'set f rom said handle, said frame being provided with a bearing for the pin 5, integral with said gear 4-; on the opposite side of this gear is an annular projection or hub, having a cam face 6, with one or more throws as may be preferred.
A casing 7, is secured by screw threads within the offset projection of the frame 1, and is bored for the reception of the plunger 8, the front end of which is bored and threaded to receive plugger points 9. The opposite, and inner, end of the plunger is formed into the cam 10, adapted to contact with the l cam 6, when rotation is transmitted to the gear 4; the plung S, has an enlargement 11, a slight distance from the cam end'wliich is fitted to an enlarged bore in the casing 7, and adapted to receive the thrust of the helical spring 12, contained in the aforesaid enlarged bore in the casing 7, in such man- .ner as to exert its tension to retract the plunger and normally keep it in a rearward or inelosed position. The ei'ilarged portion 11, is slotted longitudinally at 11, and the pin 7 set in the casing engages in the slot preventing the plunger from rotating but permitting it to work longitudinally with freedom.
The casing 7, is provided with openings 13, and 13 on opposite sides through which extends the projections l l and 1 11, of the adjusting plate 15, said plate being bored to fit the plunger 8, between the enlargement 11, and cam face 10, and is positionally maintained within 'the slots 13 and 13 of the easing 7, by means of the milled sleeve 16, novided with inteinal threads which are adapted to engage with the threads on the projections 14, and 141 of the plate 15.
It will be understood that the sleeve 16, is free to turn in either direction, but has no longitudinal movement as it is engaged between the end of the offset projection of the frame 1, on one side, and a shoulder formed on the exterior of the casing 7, on the other side.
By turning the milled sleeve 16, the plate .15, is caused to move longitudinally of the casing, and as the shoulder of the plunger ening connected with largement 11, is pressed against it by the action of the spring 12, on the opposite side of the enlargement, it follows that the inner I motion of the plunger is limited and dependent upon the position of the plate 15, and hence adjustable by the milled sleeve 16.
From the foregoing it will be understood that when rotation is communicated to the rod 2, and by it through the train of gears to the cam 6, the plunger 8, will be caused to move forward or outward, until the high points 'of the cams have passed, whereupon the spring 12, throws the plunger 8, back as far as the plate 15, will permit; this may be either the full stroke possible to secure from the cams, or reduced from that to zero if it is desired.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a dental plugger the combination with a handle having an offset frame, a cassaid frame and lying in a plane parallel with said handle, a shaft mounted in said handle adapted to be operatively connected with a motor, a gear mounted on the inner end of said shaft, a second gear provided with a bearing pin on one face and having a cam face on the other face mounted within the offset frame and meshing with the gear on said shaft; of a longitudinally movable tool holding plunger mounted in said casing and having a cam face at its inner end adapted to contact with the cam on said gear, a spring mounted on the p-lunger within said casing arranged and adapted to force said plunger inwardly, a plate mounted on the plunger and movable in said casing, and means for moving said plate longitudinally of the same.
2. A dental plugger comprising a handleprovided with an ofiset portion having a threaded bore, a casing having a reduced oppositely slotted portion, provided with a threaded end secured in said bore, a plunger mounted in said casing having a cam end provided with an enlargement having a 1011- gitudinal slot, a spring surrounding said plunger in front of said enlargement, a pin secured in the casing extending into the slot, an apertured plate mounted on said'plunger to the rear of the enlargement, provided with threaded projections extending through said slots, a gear provided with a cam face mounted in said offset portion of the handle engaging the cam end of the plunger, an operating shaft mounted in said handle provided with a gear meshing with said gear, and an integrally threaded sleeve surrounding the reduced portion of said casing engaging said projections, whereby said longitudinally.
3. A dental plugger comprising a handle, provided with an offset portion having a threaded bore, a casing having bores of different diameters and provided with a reduced oppositely slotted portion having a threaded end secured in said bore of the handle, a plunger mounted in said casing having a cam end, and an enlargement working in plate can be moved the enlarged bore of the casing, said enlargef ment being provided with a longitudinal slot, a pin secured in said casing extending into said slot, a coil spring surrounding said plunger in said enlarged bore, an apertured plate loosely mounted on said plunger to the rear of sa1d enlargement, provided with threaded extensions extending out through said slots in the casing, an integral threaded sleeve mounted on said threaded portion for adj ustingsaid plunger, a gear mounted in the offset portion of the handle provided with a cam face engaging the cam of the plunger, and an operating shaft mounted in the handle provided with a gear meshing with said gear, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
