APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10, 1905 TNSSES l UNTEn STAWENT (WEGEL44 ERNEST sc-HA'r'rNEn, OF SOHENEOTADY, NEW YORK, AssIGNOR 'ro GENERAL ELECTRIC-*fooMPANY, A CORPORATION or NEW Yoan. i
FUSE
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May .1.9, lQQ,
Te eli whom it may comm;
Beit known that I, ERNEST SCHATTNER, a subjectof the Kingof England, residing at Schenectad county of Schenectady, State of ,New Yerh, have invented certain new and useful-Im .m'e'ments in Fuses,v of Which the following a specification.
This invention relates to thermal cut-outs,
j and its object isl to avoid some of the difficul- 'ri-'sf fa side elevation` of an ihlosed use embodyfusing eiect has proved quite troublesome, l and my invention aims to overcome 1t. To this end I provide the shell Which-incloses the fuse With a partition or barrier disk having a small hole through which the fuse passes.
.The jartition divides the granulated mate- -rial mtbsiiaparate and distinct sec-tions so the fusing effect does occur in l ons, there is no continuous mass of condujo mgmaterial, and thus the current is not ma me.
` alntieaccompanyng drawin Figure l is' ing my invention 5 Fig.' 2 iS a longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a cross section at the line 3-3, Fig- 2- The shell 1 is.' of iber or other suitable insulatin material. Overi each end is slipped a meta cap 2 having a slot for the terminal blade 3 which is secured to a yoke .Il placed inside the Shell and .Secured b the Screws .5
ade has @short shank 6 49 'whehbyass through the cap, s ell and yoke.
towhxch is fastened a copper rod 7 which extends into the shell and supports one end of the fuse strip- 8. This str1 asses through a `small slot 9 in a barrier 10 of iiber or asbestos or other Aheat-resisting material, The slot is narrotvT at its middle and flares out in both directions. The barrier disk is arranged transversely in the shell and is secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by the screws 11. If desired, the shell may be Wrapped with wire 12 at this point to reinforce it. The shell is filled with granulated material 13, such as sand or plaster of paris and lime, and @teach end is a Wad of as ,estos Wool 114;
The o eration ,is as blows, -t e gases expel the arc in both direc- -tionsjfrom the ilaring'slot, and even if the igxlanular material is melted there can be 110 sing effect owing to the fact that the barrier disk separates the said material into tWO distinct parts, which prevents any continuity of the fused mass and thus prevents an7 maintenance of the current thereby.
do n'ot desire to restrict myself to the articular form or arrangement of parts lierein shown and described, since it is aarent that they may be changed and mo iied without departing from my'invention.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,--
In an inclosed fuse, the combination with the shell, of a barrier disk 'therein having a slot for the fuse, said slot iiaring both Ways, and absorbent material surrounding the fuse member and divided by said barrier.
In witness whereoil I have hereunto set my hand this St day of June, 1905. EBN EST SCHATTNER.
Witnesses: a
BENJAMIN B. HULL, HELEN Carolin.
