Specification el' Letters Patent.
Patented Muy lit, 190.8.
Application filed April 4, 1907. Serial No. 566,366.
To all wio'm, it may concern.'
Be it known that l, lirunnu'r W. (?orroui:,.
of Marion, county ol' Grunt, sind Stute of lnrliana, lieve invented e certain new and uselful Starter for Combustion-Engines3 and l do hereby declare that the following; is n. iull, clear, and exact description thereof, referentie hem had to the accompanying drawings, in whie i like letters refer to like ports.
The object of this invention is to provide :in improved ineens for storting ons, gasoleue or other ex lesive engines.
'lhe eine" eeture ol" this invention consists in 'the provision of n cylinder-like chalutier for gasolene and the like mounted in eonnee tion with the cylinder of the engine und the provision of n. piston that will force a Certain amount of the gnsolene into the cylinder for storting the suine. The piston for doingr this work is spring oetuiited and the vulve i'or closing the entrance into the cylinder is like wise spring netunted so that there is always ositive und eertuin notion lifter the ope-rotor ms lifted the piston. And normally, while the parts :ire not in use, the )iston closes the inlet into sold ,qnsolrne chfnnlier und no gasolene ilows into tlvl sinne until the piston is again ele/voted lor storting. Hence, n double ineens is provided l'or excluding the gesolene after the engine hns heen started.
In addition to the foregoing one leeturo ol l the invention consists in providing n. sinole ineens l'or ooereting the storting' ineelninisn'is for e plurality of efgslinders.
The lull nutrire of this invention will he understood l'roin the :accompanying .drnwin and the following desrription ond claims.
vlo the drawingy Ylfigure 1 is n plnn view el' a bottin y ol gnsolene engine cylindrrs, u gesolene trink, the doshdiourd ol nn mitoinohile or the like und n. handle l'or operating the start-- iner 'nievlmnisiny ports, however, being oroken away. Fig. .2 is e eentrnl vertical longitudinel ser tion through u storting device with the iston elevated und the chamber therein illed with gusolene and the ipe und esolene tank partly broken away. il 3 is the suine with the handle actuated an the gesolene supplied tolthe engine cylinder. Fi 4 is e plan View ol' one ofthe starting,r ineelmnisins shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is useetion on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1 showing un indicator on the flesh hoord.
In detail the drawings show si dash boord l() of an automobile or the like in front of which there is o buttery oil ivy'lhiders 11 of insolentq enoines und on :t higher level than the snid cylinders n `snisolene tank 12 is provided with n. conduit 13 lending therefrom to the storting :neehnnism ossoi-.ioted with each oylinder, y
14- is the iwniting' ineffhfinism.
Upon eer-4h cylinder 11 :t1-,using 1 is soeur-ed by ineens ol' thel threaded tubular end 1G screwing into the oep 11E. 'lhe erasing 15 has o, oylinder-like ehztinher 17 adapted to reeeiye gesolene from the trink 12, the conduit 13 being eonnileted with the tulnuhir 'projet-.- tion 18 through the hex 118. liroin the elnnnher 17 in the ensimi 15 a smell pussngewny or port 19 extends c ownwerd for a. slight distance und then enters en enlarged passage-- wey '20 in the upper end of which n lnill-velve 21 is leeztted for closing the passage-wey or port 19. This bull vulve is held norninlly closed by the spring' 22 which lies in the enlarged passage-way 20.
The upper end 0i the easing 15 o )en ond Within the upper port of the eosin t 1ere is u bearing :sleeve L3 with suitehle peeking 24. at its lower end und within vthis henrini sleeve 23 und the eylinder-like ehmnber 17 lie/low e piston 25 operates, it heling secured u on the piston rod. ?6 that extends vertically 't trough the clip 27. A spring 28 is coilednbout seid piston rod between the cui) 27 and the piston so its Yto force Suid piston dmvnsvnrd, es nippems in Fig. 3.
The piston rod 2G is elevated hy the lever Si) iulernined on the pin 31 ,in the divided r in 32 that n'iounted in connection with the (fusing 15. gages thev undeside of the disk .no on the One end of the lover 30 en ui ier side of the piston rod o und the other en( of the lever 30 is eurved downward in the are of o eirele under the eccentric 35 und so es to he uetueted hy seid eeeentrie. The oeeentrie 35 is mounted on the rod 36 which extends :there the entire battery of ges en gino cylinders sind has mounted u on it the {zi-...rentrie 35 for the starting meelianism ol" every frylinder ond it extends through to the rear of the dash 1t) and en its rear end there is n crank 37, whereby the operator of the uu- 'toinobile emi readily turn the rod 3G and therefore turn all the eeeentries 35 into the position shown in Figs. 2 und 3. Upon the vreor surlue of the dash 10 u plete 38 is se-
