Letters .Patent No. 88,768, dated April 1'3, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEEDING-TROUG-H FOR HORSES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters' Patent and making part of the lame.
To allpersons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, ADDISON D. BARRETT, of Gambridgepcrt, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention, having reference to vthe supplying of a Feeding or Watering-Trough of a horse or. otherA animal, with grain or food, or water; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 denotes a top view;
Figure 2, a front elevation; and
Figure 3, an end View of the mechanism which constitutes my invention, for supplying the manger and drink receptacle ofa stall with grain and water.
The object of my invention is to enable a horse or brute animal to be automatically supplied with food and-drink, or either, at any time when such may be desirable.
. To this end, I arrange above his manger, or food and drink receptacle or receptacles, the mechanism to be hereinafter described.
In the drawings- 'A denotes a frame, forv supporting the operative parts ofthe mechanism.
'Ihis frame I usually erect or place on the floor, which may be directly over the stall or place of feeding, or it may be disposed over or above either 'the food or the drink receptacle, or over both of them of such stall. i
Within the frame, and so as to be supported by it by means of suitable boxes or bearingsa a, I arrange a horizontal shaft, B, provided at one end with a crank, C.
To the said shaft, and so as to project from it in manner as represented, I fasten a hopper, D, underneath which I arrange a spout, or chute, E, to lead grain into the Ifeeding-trough, or manger, after discha rge of such grain by the hopper in falling from a horizontal position.
To the said hopper, and anotherhorizontal shaft, F, I apply a pair of toggles, or arms, G H. The lower one, Gr, of such arms extends upward, and is hinged or jointed to the lower end of the other arm. At its upper end, the arm H turns on a pin, b, going through it, and being projected from 011e end of the hopper.
Another arm, I, extends up from the shaft F, so as to engage with a lever latch, K, supported by the frame A, and arranged therein, in manner as represented.
Withthis latch it is intended to use a common alarm-clock, the hammer of the alarm of which is to be arranged with respect to the tail of the latch K, so that when the hammer is set in action by the mechanism ofthe clock, it shall strike on the latch tail, and
depress it, in order to throw the latch ont of engagement with the arm I. For this purpose the bell of the alarm-apparatus may be removed or not, as circumstances may require.
Furthermore, on the platformlof the frame Aa tnb L, may be placed. Such tub is to have a conduit leading from an aperture in its bottom, so as to discharge water from the tub into the drink receptacle ofthe stall. Over the mouth of the discharge-outlet of the tub, I arrange a valve, c, Shownin dotted lines, which, by means of a wire or rod, d, I connect .with an arm, e, extended from the shaft B, the same being so that when the hopper drops and turns its shaft, the valve shall be raised ofi' its seat, soas to cause water, when in the tub, to be discharged therefrom.
With this mechanism, and au alarm-clock arranged with it, as described, it will be seen that the supplying of the feeding or watering-trough of a stall with grain or water at any given time, may be effected, without any attention of a person, except it be to previously prepare the hopper with the supply of grain, and the tub, with the quantity of water that may be required, and setting the apparatus, or mechanism so that at the requisite time, the c1ock-apparatus shall be set in operation, so as to effect the disengagement of the latch from the arm I.
The toggles when in line, or nearly in line, with each other, will aid greatly in supporting the hopper in its horizontal position. Theremay be a series of the hopf pers applied to one shaft, so as to effect the supplying of food to a series of ruangers; and there may also be a series of the water tubes, one for each stall, and with mechanism, as described, for operating its valve, by the rotary motion of the shaft caused by the descent of the hoppers.
So when the watering-apparatus alone is applied to a stall, a Weight in the place of the hopper may be projected from the shaft B.
What, therefore, I claim as my invention, is-
The combination of the hopper D, the toggles G H, their shaft F, the arm I, and the latch K, the same being for application to and use with an alarm-apparatus, or clock, and with a conduit leading to a manger, or feeding-trough, as set forth.
Also, the combination of the' tub L, its valve c, valve rod (l, and operative arm e, with the shaft B, the hopper D, or a weight, the toggles G H, their shaft F, the arm I, and the latch K, the said latch being to operate with an alarm-clock applied to it, as
and for the purpose as specified.
. ADDISON D. BARRETT.
