To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS RENAUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chauvin, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes Line Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clothes line reels, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a clothes line reel inclosed within a sheet metal casing for protecting the line from the effects of rain and snow whenever the line is not required for use.
Another object is to provide a simple and efficient clothes line reel for tightening a clothes line, and for inclosing the clothes line when not required for use.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a clothes line reel made in accordance with my inven tion, and secured to a cross piece upon a post. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the casing. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the casing. Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral 1 designates an upright post to which is secured a cross piece 2. My clothes line reel comprises a metal casing 3, preferably of circular form of the required length and provided with end heads 4 fitted to the body portion 3 of the casing. Brackets 5 are secured to the heads 4:, said brackets having outwardly turned feet 6 secured by screws or other suitable fastenings 7 to the cross )iece 2. A roller 8 is provided with end pintles E), 9 which are journaled in the brackets 5, said pintles passing through the heads 4. The pintle 9 is provided with a squared end 10, and secured to said squared end is a ratchet wheel 11, and a crank 12 is secured to the squared end outside the ratchet wheel 11. A pawl 13 is pivoted at 14 to the bracket 5, said pawl engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel 11. Secured to the roller 8 is a screw eye 15 to which one end of the clothes line is attached by passing the line through the eye and tying a knot therein. A sliding door or cover 16 is provided with a handle 17, said door being mounted to slide between the casing 3 and the guide flanges 18 formed on or secured to the heads 4.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: The clothes line having been wound upon the roller 8 and the door 16 closed, in order to attach the clothes line, the door 16 .is opened and the line is drawn out through the door opening, the pawl 13 being disengaged from the ratchet wheel 11. \Vhen the outer end of the clothes line has been attached to the post, the crank 12 is used for tightening the rope, and the pawl 13 is thrown into engagement with the ratchet wheel 11. .Vhenever the clothes line is not required for use, it may be wound upon the roller 8 by turning the crank 12.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a clothes line reel made in accordance with my invention is of simple construction, will protect the clothes line from the weather when not required for use, and when in use, the clothes line may be held taut and in proper condition for use.
llaving thus described I claim is:
A clothes line reel comprising a support with angular brackets secured to the opposite ends thereof, said brackets each having a single arm which extends longitudinally outwardly from said support, a drum having heads on opposite ends rigidly secured to the brackets, bearings in the heads of the drums, and bearings in the brackets registering with those in the drums, a shaft within the drum having trunnions on opposite ends rotatably mounted in the bearings of the drums and brackets, a sliding door for the drum, a ratchet wheel secured on one of the trunnions of the shaft, 'a pawl on one of the brackets for engagement with the ratchet wheel and a crank-arm secured on the same trunnion as the ratchet wheel, substantially as specified.
