PUZZLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1908.
Application filed December 5, 1907. Serial No. 405,219.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL D. LOWERY, a g citizen of the United States, residing at Harrisburg,.ii1 the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Puzzles; and I do declare .the following to be a full, clear, and exact description or the invention, suchv as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. l
My invention relates to puzzles. The object of the invention is to lprovide a uzzle which will be cheap to manufacture, w iich is comparatively hard to work out and yet is always amusing and entertaining. With this object in view, the .invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described hereinafter and particuc In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 1s a to plan view with the cover in position; and Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the cover n ig. 1. l
eerring -more especially to the drawings, lfiepresents a rectangular box having a tcp, 2, secured thereto in any suitable manner, so as to and which is provided with a plurality of apertures, 3, here shown as three in number.
chambers, 4, 5, 6, `the rest of the apparatus in the box being closed from inspection by@ the to 2. The cfz'mpartments, 4, 5,' 6, are deline by side Walls, 7 which extend aroundthroughout the box, and form channels or raceways, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13,- and also blind chambers, 14, 15 and. 16'. The side walls extend` up to a point ap roximately ges of t e box and may be curved in any suitable manner, but are preferably formed as herein shown.
A partition, 17, extending from one of the walls, 7 vto the side of the boX 1 is provided to form chambers, y18 and 19, for the recepthese playing balls from hanging in corners,
apertures, and
be fixed with relation to the boX,
all partitionsare rounded at their corners, and corner pieces, 21, are provided.
The only part of the working which is seen 'is at the moment the balls, 20, which represent trains entering the stations. The. legends, Station No. 1, Station No. 2, and Station No. 3, are placed adjacent the Station No. 1 always indicates the starting oint of the round trip. The balls are first eld within Station No. 1, and one at a time are started out and carried aroundto Station No. 2. The same operation is followed in carrying the balls from Station No. 2 to Station No. 3, and from Station No. 3 back to Station No. 1.
It will be seen that the channels which are formed by the side walls, 7, and the sides of the box, are invisible to the operator, and it is, therefore, rather difficult to manipulate, the balls so that they may be placed 1n the, succeeding stations. l
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. the construction and operation of the inven- *tion will rbe readily understood Without re-v quiring a more extended explanation.` d Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacriicing any of .the advantages ofthe i defined in the appended claims. 80
invention, as
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters- Iatent, is: t
In al puzzle, a box, a plurality of raised ribs equaling in 4widthI the depth of the box 85 and forming tortuous or serpentine communieating passage-Ways orv channels, chambers or compartments having entrance ways communicating with` said passages or channels, a plurality o balls adapted to be moved with-n insaid passage-wais, and'aremovable opaque cover for the boX aving unobstructed apertures registering with the compartments.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence oftwo subscribing`witnesses.
DANIEL- D. LOWERY;
