FILTERING-FAUCET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB KOEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in F iltering-Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved filtering-faucet by means of which water, as supplied by the service-pipes, can be conveniently filtered, and not only mechanical impurities, but also chemical impurities, removed from the same; and for this purpose the invention consists of a filtering-faucet the barrel of which is provided with a filteringbody comprising pulverized charcoal and layers of sponge confining said charcoal and being held in position by a strainer that is supported in the front-piece or cap of the faucet, which cap is screwed into the barrel of the faucet, the barrel being provided with a discharge-spout in front of the strainer.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side-elevation of my improved filtering-faucet, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on line 3, 3, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, (1 represents the barrel of my improved filtering-faucet, which is provided at its rear end with a stopcock l) and with an interior shoulder a in front of the stopcock. The body of the faucet is preferably made outwardly flaring, said flaring portion being used for inserting the filtering material, and with a cylindrical front end (1* at the lower part of which a discharge-spout a is arranged. The cylindrical front end is provided with an interior screw-thread for screwing in a cap 0 which is provided with a square or hexagonal boss 0 to permit taking hold of the cap with a wrench. The cap is provided with an interior shoulder 0 into which are screwed posts d preferably four posts, which carry at their outer ends a strainer d which is retained in position on the ends of the posts by means of ring-shaped washers d and screwnuts d that are screwed on the threaded ends of the posts. the outwardly-flaring barrel 0 of the faucet is filled with an intermediate layer of charcoal e and end layers of sponge, felt, or other suitable material e The discharge spout o communicates with the body of the faucet at a point between the cap and the strainer, so thatsaid spout is in direct communication with the open space between said .parts. The faucet is screwed on to the water-service pipe of the building where the filteringfaucet is to be used.
The layers of pulverized charcoal and sponge are tightly packed in the barrel of the faucet and then the cap of the strainer screwed on the front portion of the cylindrical cap, so that the parts are firmly held together. After the filtering-faucet has been used for some time and it is desired to clean the filtering material, the cap with the strainer is unscrewed and the different layers of sponge and charcoal removed, and the charcoal replaced by a new supply of charcoal and the layers of sponge cleaned out b Washing out the impurities settled in the same. The inner layers of sponge are then replaced, a new layer of charcoal placed against the same and somewhat tamped, the outer layers of s onge placed over the charcoal, and then a l are held in position by the strainer by screwing in the cap.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A filtering-faucet comprising a barrel having a discharge-spout leading downwardly therefrom near one end, a body of filtering material contained in said barrel, a cap threaded into the discharge-end of said barrel, a plurality of posts extending inwardly from said cap near its rim, and a strainer mounted on said posts and holding the filtering material in place, the space between said cap and said strainer being unobstructed eX- cept for said posts and in direct communication with said dischargespout.
