The rear ends of the beams 3 are suspended from a bury 1() by means of chains 11, the lower ends of said chains being secured to the beams, while the upper ends thereof are secured to rollers 12 onthe bar 10, said rollers being adopted to travel on the upper edge of the bar. The bar 10 extends laterally through standards 18 on the frame 1, said standards being provided with suitable slots 14, through which said bar oxtendsand, in order to support said bar and provide means for raising and lowering the auxiliary frames 4, a shaft 15 is extended vertically through a platform 16 carried by the frame 1 and is swivelly secured to the bar 10 at its longitudinal center and, by providing threads on the shaft 15 and extending the same throughzi threaded socket l? in the platform 16, the rotating of said shuft will raise and lower the ends of the beams 3 and the auxiliary frames carried thereby, a hand wheel 18 being secured to the upper end of tlie shaft, whereby the shaft may be readily operated and, by this means it will be seen that the disks may be elevated entirely outof engagement with the surface of the road-way, if desired.
The beams 3 are adapted to. be swung laterally away from the frame 1 to dispose the disks to the outer edge of the roadway or into the gutter and, inorder to hold the beams at varying distances from the frame 1, we provide any suitable form of cables or chains 19, the outer ends of which are secured to the beams 3, while the inner ends thereof are secured to a winding drum 20, so that by rotating said drum in one direction, the beams will be left free to swing away from the frames, but, when rotated in the opposite direction, the beams will be drawn towards the frame.
The upper end of the drum 20 is extended through the platform 16 and is provided with a gear 21, with which meshes a worm 22 on a shaft 23, said shaft being preferably inclined and the rear end thereof brou ht into juxtaposition to a seat 2e on the p atform 16, whereby the hand wheel 25, on the rear end f the shaft 23, may be readily reached by the operator. The forward end of the shaft 23 is rotatably mounted in a bearing 26, while the rear end thereof is similarlymounted in a standard 27 and, in order to prevent rotation of the drum, whereby the v cables will become loosened and the beams permitted to spread apart/a latch 28 is pivotally secured to the standard 27 and in position to engage a ratchet wheel 29 on the shaft 23.
- In order to pack the surface of the roadwa after the same has been loosened by the dis and moved to the highest part or center of the road-way, rollers 30 are provided,
which are preferably secured to the rear end of the frame 1 and the faces of said rollers are also preferably curved to conform to the curvature of the surface of the road-'wa and it will be clearly understood that whi e we have shown but two of the rollers, any number of the same may be placed in position in the rear of the disks.
The graderis adapted to be tpropelled in any suitable manner, but prefera ly by means of a traction engine or similar device and, when so propelled, the cross bar 2 is hitched to the engine and the grader caused to travel in the rear of the engine and, by suspendiru the disks from the beamsS, the gutters a longside the road-way may be reached by the disks and, at the" same time, retain the engine in the center of the road-way.
It will be further understood that where the surface of the road-wa is in a softened state, anysuitable form of lade may be employed for moving the soil to the center'of the roadway instead of the disks. It will likewise be seenthat the disks may be'reversed and used forditching purposes, the disks loosening the soil. and moving it to each side of the path of the grader and, when the grader is so used, the rollers are to be dispensed with.
It will thus be seen that we have provided a very efiicient and economical form of grader and one wherein the loosened soil from the outer edges of the road-waymay be readil moved to the center of theroad-way and toroughly packed and it will likewise be seen that the surface of the road-way will be gradually curved from the center to the I outer edges thereof. It w likewise be seen that the parts of the gra er can be quickly and'easlly operated to lift. the disks from enthe frame.

What we claim is:
-1. In a grader of the class described, the combination with a frame, a cross head at one end of said frame and rollers at the opposite end of said frame; of rearwardly extending beams secured to said cross head, means to control the swinging movement of said beams, auxiliary frames pivotally secured to said beams and disks carried by said auxiliary beams adapted to loosen the soil and move the same laterally.
2. In a grader of the class described, the combination with a frame and a cross head at one end of said frame, of beams pivotally secured to said cross head, auxiliary frames pivotally secured to one end of said beams, means to adjust the angle of saidauxiliary frames, a supporting bar for said auxiliary frames and means carried by the auxiliary frames to engage the soil and move the same laterally.
3. In agrader of the class described, the combination with aframe having across head at one end thereof; of a air of beams pivoted at one end to the ends of the cross head, auxiliary frames pivotally secured to the opposite ends of the beams, means to adjust the angle of the auxiliary frames, a supporting bar, means to movably attachtheauxiliary frames to the bar and disks carried by said auxiliary frames.-
4. In a grader of the class described, the combination with a frame havina cross head at one end thereof; of a pair 0 beams piv otall secured at one end to the cross head, auxi iary frames pivotally secured to the opfiosite ends of the beams, disks on said aux iary frames, means to adjust the angle of the auxiliary frames, a bar above said aux- 'iliary frames, means to movably secure the frames to said bar, cables attached to said beams and means to wind said cables, whereby the cables will be lengthened and the beams swung away from the frame or the cables shortened and the beams moved toward 5.
