Be itknown thatwe, CoLE COLLIER and JAMES C. RIGG, citizens of the United States,.
residing at Hooktown, Kcntuckly, have invented certain new .and usefu Il rovernents in Lifting-Jacks, of which the ollowing is a specification. A
Our invention relates to lifting jacks for use in lifting wagons and for other purposes where the said appliances are designed to be employed and our object is to provide a simple and effective construction which In ay be placed upon the marl-:etat a reasonable price and one which will be durable and will meet all requirements in use.
The invent-ion comprises the features, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a lifting jack embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 1s a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a view of a detail part.
ln these draudngs 1 indicates the base of the jack consisting preferably of a block or strip of wood and upon this is sup orted a standard 2 o composite form. T e main portion of this standard consists of a post 3 of wood, resting at its lower end upon the base and having secured to its side edges b v through-bolts 4 the supplemental standard members 5 consisting of straps or bars of metal. These stra-ps or bars extend both above and below the ends of the main postmelnber 3 and at their lower ends thtxv enibrace the base portion of the jack and are secured thereto by a bolt.
The upwardly extending ends of the side portions or straps provide a fork above t-he main standard member 3 in which 4is pivoted the lever 7 of the jack. This lever is coms posed of wood and in order to provide a strong and durable construction we employ a pivot iron- 8 having an c ve 9 to receive the pivot bolt 1U. This )ivot iron is secured to the lower face of the lever and it is extended forvlrardlj;r and provided with depending ears 10 at or near its front end to receive between them the end of a locking lever li which is givoted between the said ears b v n. bolt 12.
his locking lever has a segmental portion 13 notched at 14 and adapted to thus This iron is formed of metal having a portion lving along the face ol the wooden member o the standard to which it is secured by bolts 16 'and it has an angular portion 17 extending tothe base and providedwith a foot 18 which is bolted to the base. The se mental portion of the locking lever passes t Irough a slot 20 at the upper end of the wooden bar and its notches engage the detent iron.
he handle of the locking lever extends along beneath the main lever so that with one hand the operator can manipulate both the main lever and the locking leve-r. On the upper ed e of the main lever a wear plate 21 is secured by the same bolts which are used to secure the ivot iron in lace. Vle also ein loy an a justable bloc 22 connected' wit the main lever by links 23, said block having a wear plate 24 thereon. This block is ada ted to be swung to and from position over t Ie Wear plate on the main lever and by this the 'ack is adapted to o crate in connection wit 1 vehicles having dierent heights of axles or with articles of different. heights. The base of the jack is provided with straps or irons 25 extending along its side edges, said irons having -proJect-ing portions at the end of the base in which is journaled a roller 26.
We claiin as our invention: 1. In combination in a lifting jack, a base, a standard comprising the main portion of wood, the supplemental iron portions or straps secured to the edges of said main wooden portion and projecting above and below the same, the lower projecting parts of the supplemental standen members einbracing'and being secured to the base, and the upwardly )rojecting part-s forming a fork, a main li ting lever journaled in the fork, formed by the pro'ectng su )plemental standard members an means for locking the main lever in place, substantially as described.
2. In combination in a jack, a buse, a standard, extending up therefrom comprising a main portion, sup )lcmentul standard portions secured to the e( gc of the main portion and .nojecting above und below the same, the ower projecting ends oi' said sup- )lemcntul standard portions embracing und icing secured to the lmsc, n. main lover, u pivot iron secured to the lower edge of said mais lever und lyiu I lwhvccu tlw fork formed by the upwardly projecting supple- Q ananas mental standard portions, said pivot iron through the weer plate, main lever und hav' an extension wlth ears de ndin pivot iron for holdlng the said parts together, there om andalocking lever ivotm -in sai( substantially as described.
ears, substantially as describe( In testimony whereof, we affix our signa- 15 ,5 3. In combination in a lifting jack, a base, tures in presence of two witnesses.
a main lever, a standard to which said main I COLE COLLIER lever is pvoted a pivot iron having ears de- Pending therefrom, said lron being on the J ower face of the main lever and locking le lvitnesses: 1-0 ver pivoted insaid es rs, a weer plate on the JN0. F. `oLLnm,
