MINNIE A. PATTEN, OF MILLTOWN, GEORGIA.
WA sHING MA CHINE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 28, 1908.
Application filed. October 13, 1906. Serial No. 338,818.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MINNIE A. PATTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milltown, in the county of Berrien, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I/Vashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to washing machines that have combined with them a stove or heater for heating the water in the washing-machine.
It is the purpose of the invention to provide a suitable stove or furnace, in the structure of which shall be embodied a boiler forming the top of the stove, and which shall comprise an interiorly ribbed bottom and be semi-circular in cross-section so that a rocking rubber may be so supported on the stove as to be actuated to wash the clothes between it and the said ribbed bottom of the boiler.
The nature of. the invention is fully portrayed in the annexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, in view of which the improvement will first be described with respect to its construction and mode of use,
and then be pointed out in the subjoined claim.
Of the said drawingsFigure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
Similar numerals of reference designate similar parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.
In the drawings, 10 designates the furnace, which is of rectangular or box-like form, and of greater length than width. The top 11 of the furnace is curved downward from the ends in substantially semi-circular form in longitudinal section, and is formed on its upper surface with transverse ribs 12. The said edges of the top have a water-tight con nection with the sides 16 of the furnace proper, the latter extending up to a plane coincident with the ends of the furnace forming also the sides of the boiler, and having ears 13 secured thereto, which ears are so formed as to constitute bearings for the crank-shaft 14 that extends across the top of the rubber 15, constructed and arranged to be. rocked in the boiler formed by the sides 16 of the furnace above its ribbed top 12.
The rubber 15 is constituted of semi-disk shaped side plates 22 formed with centrally located upward extensions 23, the latter being provided with longitudinal slots 24. The bottom of the rubber 15 is constituted of hollow tubes 17 transversely supported between the side plates 22 adjacent the curved edges thereof and in semi-annular series. The tubes 17 are arranged in spaced relation, whereby the water not only circulates through the same, but between the same. The slots 24 surround the shaft 14 which is constructed adjacent its ends with threads 25. Nuts 26 are mounted on the threads 25 and are designed to frictionally engage the extensions 23. By virtue of the provision of the slots 24, the rubber 15 may be adjusted to selected vertical positions with relation to the top 11, and is supported at a height sufficient to permit of clothes being placed between the tubes 17 and the top 11, which likewise constitutes the bottom of the boiler and in this function coacts with the ex tended sides 16. The crank shaft 14 is rocked by a crank 18 in the well known manner.
The furnace is provided at its rear end with a flue or smoke-pipe, 19, and a door, 20, having a slide-controller draft opening, 21.
In use a fire may be kindled in the furnace, which will quickly heat the water or suds that will have been previously placed in the boiler with the clothes to be washed. After the water shall have been sufficiently heated, or the clothes shall have been boiled in the suds, the rubber will be put in place and rocked through the medium of the crank until the said clothes shall have been cleansed, when they may be taken out and treated as though washed in an ordinary boiler.
What is claimed is A washing machine of the type set forth, comprising a receptacle formed with vertical sides, and a concavely curved bottom, a rubber comprising side plates and having its bottom spaced away from the bottom of said receptacle and curved conformably thereto, said side plates being formed with vertical extensions having longitudinal slots, a crank shaft journaled in the side walls of said receptacle for rocking movement and having threaded portions, said crank shaft being In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, projected throughd sitlird Cshts, and nutcs1 in presence of two witnesses.
mounted upon sai t ea e portions an adapted to bear frictionally against said 6511- i MINNIE PATTEN' tensions, whereby said side plates are Witnesses: mounted for vertical adjustment with rela- J S. SIRMANs, tion to the bottom of said receptacle. M. VIOKERS.
