COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 28, 1908.
Application filed January 3, 1906. Serial No 294,393.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLOF N. BRANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of WVise, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couplings and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to car couplers and has for its object to provide a simple, efficient and durable coupling device for use in coupling railway cars.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention, the casing for one member being broken away, Fig. 2 is a detail view of the coupling rod, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the position of the parts when the rod is about to be released,Fig14 is a detail vertical transverse sectional view on the line 441 of Fig. 1.
Referring more specifically to the drawings the numeral 7 denotes the casing for the coupling mechanism and 8 spaced jaws which are seated upon the bottom of the casing and which are held pivotally in place thereon by means of ins 9 which are formed integral with the under-side of the said jaws and which extend through the bottom of the casing.
Each of the jaws 8 comprises a shank 9 and a head 10, the head 10 of each jaw being directed inwardly toward the head of the opposite jaw as shown at 11, the inwardly directed portions 11 of the heads having oppositely disposed rearwardly diverging edge faces 12. The shanks 9 of the jaws are curved outwardly and thence inwardly and have their rear ends curved outwardly as at 13 to insure free entrance of the coupling-rod.
Extending upwardly from the bottom of the casing are oppositely disposed pins 14 to which are connected one end of leaf springs 15 which extend rearwardly and which lie against the opposing edge faces of the shanks 9 of the aws, the said springs being secured at their opposite ends to the said jaw-shanks as at 16. By reason of the location of the pivotal point of the jaws, the tendency of the springs 15 are to swing the shanks of the jaws away from each other and the heads of the j aws toward each other, the movement of the jaws being limited by means of stoppins 17 carried by the bottom of the casing.
A coupling rod 18 is tapered at each end as at 19 andis provided with a head 20 which has its sides converged as at 21, the rear ends of the sides of the head lying in a plane with the sides of the body of the coupling-rod 18 to form shoulders 22. The top face of the head 20 slopes downwardly and forwardly as at 23 so that when the said head is engaged between the jaws 8, the said upper face of the head will wedge under a yoke 24 carried by the bottom of the casing in advance of the heads 10 of the jaws 8.
Formed integral with the upper face of each jaw and extending upwardly therefrom is a pin 25 and to each of the said pins is keyed a segmental gear 26, the said gears being in mesh with each other and one of said gearsbeing provided with an operating lever 27 which works in a guide slot 28. When it is desired to disengage the head 20 of the coupling-rod 18 from the said jaw, the lever 27 is swung to cause the said jaws to move against the tension of their respective springs and away from engagement with the said head 20.
What is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising a support, a pair of spring controlled jaws pivoted upon the support, the jaws being provided at their inner ends with abrupt shoulders, a yoke rigidly fixed upon the support rearwardly of said jaws, and a coupling rod provided at each end with a tapered head which is of greater width than the remainder of the rod thereby resulting in abrupt shoulders which seat behind the shoulders at the rear ends of the jaws, the upper face of said head being beveled whereby, when the shoulders upon the head engage behind the shoulders upon the jaws, the head will have a wedging reception in the yoke.
