PAPER-FEEDING MACHINE No., 886, 1 is.
' I Application filed Augult 3,
- Feeding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to. improvei nents in paper fcedin machines, andparticularly to feeding mac ines of the sheet combin type, in which the pile of sheets is acte upon by combing l'eeding'devices which comb or feather out the too able sup ort connected with sheets of the pile to gradually separate tlfe. successive sheets near the top so that they may be drawn from the pilc'periodically and :-fed to any 'n iachine arranged to operate upon the' 'individual sheets. ..Macliines of this type are set forth in Letters Patent No. 829,854, granted to me August 28th,'1906, and No. -850,'82l, -g-rantcd April 16th, 1907.
My irescnt invention is an improvement upon t ie structure set forth in an application-for patent filed by me August 1st, 1,907, Serial No. 386602, and the object of in'y-present inventionis to further improve the construction andopcration of this type of mechanism. Y
My present invention involves the same enera principle as the mechanism covered by my said application Serial-No. 386602, in that the sheet actuated tripping finger earries and operates a wedging blade or. plate which is projected between two cooperating rollers, one of which is mounted upon a mov- 7 the tripping finger o the latching niecln'inisni. The
main feature of distinction over the machine of said prior application is the mounting of the sheet actuated controlling-mechanism. In'n'iy )i'esent improvement 1 have mounted both ,ol the coi'iperating rollers and omni ping finger upon a movable support which is periodically operated by cam mechanism through a link or pitnian having lost motion connection with said movable support so that the periodic elevation of the tripping linger (nit of; the path oi the sheets is accomplished by raising the said, movable support; The
. limiilllQtlOIl connection oi" this can 'operated link or pitinan with the movable support of Specification of Letters Patent.

Sheet-feeding machines of the type to.
which my present invention relates are provided with twosets of sheet moving devices arranged to operate atopposite sides. of the -inachine. Inthe accompanyin r drawings, I have 'shown'only one half of tie machine,
including only one of these sheet moving '(levices, but it'will be understood that two such devices of the SELIIIO COIIStI'UClZlOH are-emplayed, each being independently controlled ya sheet actuated tripping device, as hereinafter explained.
' 'lhe frame-work of my improved machine may be of any suitable construction to properly su port the working parts hereinafter referrer to. Inthe drawings, 1 re resents one of the verticalside frames. 7 he side frames are suitably bracedtolinake them rigid by means of stay rods 2, 3, and other frame parts not shown, and within the frame is provided a suitable table or support (not shown) for carrying a pile of sheets, indicated by the reference letter P. At the frontof the pile of sheets; I provide'a series of vertical guiderods or strips,- (n t shown) for confin f ,"ygthe pile. i
the tripping mechanism is for the purpose of sliii ft bearing the brackets, (not shown). 8 are drop rollers j ournaled in the rock arms 9, mounted upon the transverse rockshaft 10. The drop rollers 8 are supported above two or more of the under feed rollers 6, with which they co6p crate. The rock shaft 10 extends transversely of the machine, above the constantly 10 running lower shaft 5, and is suitably braced arms, (not shown), rigidly secured to the auxiliary longitudinal frame pieces 12. The rock shaft 10 is operated by any of the usual forms of mechanism, such, for instance, as shown in my above-named patents, whereby the drop rollers 8 are periodically lowered and raised into and out'of engagement with the cooperating under rollers '6, for. perform sheets.
The main cam shaft extends transversely of the machine and is suitably journaled in the main side frames 1 and the auxiliary longitudinal frame )ieces 12. This shaft 20 is provided with a driving pulley 25, as shown, or it n ay be driven in any other suitable -manner, said shaft being the shaft from which all other arts of the machine are driven. The cam s raft 20 carries a large gear 26, which meshes with a smaller gear (not shown) secured to a larger gear 28,
journaled upon a stud 2 9, pro ecting from the side frame of the machine. The gear 28 meshes with and drives a small intermediate gear (not shown) which in turn drives a small gear 32 keyed to the projecting end of the comber driving shaft 35, hereinafter referred to, and another smaller gear (not :49 shown) keyed to the projecting end 'of the constantly rotating feed shaft 5 above referred to. This gearing is clearly shown and described in my above named patents.
40 is one of a pair of combing wheels,
'Each of these combing wheels is freely jour-.
naled at 41 upon a rock arm 42, which is freely journaled upon a sleeve which is in turn journaled upon the shaft 35. This 'shaft 35 has keyed to .it a gear 45 which meshes with a gear 46 secured to the combing wheel 40, by which the combingwheel is constantly rotated.
Projecting from one face of the combersu iporting rock-arm is an ntegral lug 43 in which is mounted an adjustable tappet screw 44. Secured upon the sleeve 50 to one side of the rock arm 42 is a rock arm 51 which is provided with a finger 52, which projects beneath the tappet screw' 44 just referred to, and by its engagement therewith lifts the combing wheel away from the pile.
13v adjusting the screw 44, the limits of rise and fall of the combing wheel can be fixed. The rock-arm 51 is moved in one direction for lifting the combing 'wheel by a spring mechbetween its ends by'two or more bracket.
ing their function of feeding off the successive,
.vertically and riding, illliJS upper end,lin a .operating shaft 35. The hu portion 67 of anisrn which is normally restrained by a latching device which is periodically released by the sheet actuated trip Sing device herein after enplain'ed. The roc -arm 51 is moved in the opposite direction to allow the combing whee to move by gravity into engagement with the pile of sheets by the action of a cam as willn'ow be explained. Sleeve 50 has at its end, adjacent to the rock-arm 51', another rock-arm 55' towhich'is pivotally connected it pitman 56, formed with a yokeshaped upper end, which straddles the shaft 20. The shaft 20 carries a peripheral cam 58, which engages an antifriction roller 57 journaledupon the pitman 56, whereby the rock-arm 56,- sleeve 50, and fi er 52 are moved once in each revolution 0 the shaft 20 to'reset the spring and latching mechanisms (hereinafter described) and allow the combing wheel to rest upon the pile.
The rock-arm 51 projects forwardly from the sleeve 50 and has ivotally connected to its forward end a latching bar 60 extending socket formed in a bracket 62 extending l'atorally from" one I of thecentral auxiliary frames 12. Freely journaled-upon a pin or bolt 65 projecti laterally from the latching bar 60 is an anti iction roller 64, which normally engages .the upper end of a latching arm 63 freely journaledupon a bolt 66 mounted in .bracket arm 67 of the movable support for the tri pping mechanism herein after described. en the latching arm 63 is in'en agement with the antifriction roller 64, said arm will be in roper' osition -to maintain the downward t rust o the latching bar to withstand the ressure of the spring device (presently to e referred to), with the result that theeombing wheel will be allowed to rest in its lower operating position. The latching arm 63 is moved into and out of active position during the operation of the machine by the means hereinafter described, its movement out of action bein normally under the control of the sheets fed from the pile. i A rod 70 is pivoted at 71 to the rock arm 51' and projected therefrom vertically through the guide bracket 62. It should be observed, however, in this connection. that in theposition of the parts as shown in Fig. .4 when the machine is operatmg .andthe tripping mechanism is in readiness to be tripped by the action of-the sheet;
the upper en of slot 11'3 is resting uponthe shaft 80, and the lower end .of the upper slot llht is in engagement with the shaft 91". This relative arrangement is to permit the upward movement of rod or pitman 113 to raise the roller 91 before the rock arm 67 is moved, the position of lower. slot 113 in Fig. 4 being such that the pitman will have a preliminary upward movement relatively to shaft SQ-befdre engaging said shaft for moving rock arm 67.
' As described bove the lower constantly ruhning shaft is provided with the ordinary under feed rollers '6 and the special underfeed'rollers 7.. These rollers 7, two of-which are provided in the machine, are in the form twin rollers. This is clearly shown in Fig. 1

of twin; rollers, witlnan annular groove pr T 1e same result can, of coursc be accomplished bly mounting two separate rollers upon the s aft 5 witha suflicient space between them. The twin rollers 7 are mounted upon the shaft 5 directly beneath the tripping fingers 100 so that the'lowcr sheet engaging portion .100 of each tripping finger Wlll. project into the annular groove or recess 7* of the under of the drawings. v
Cooperating with the under t'win rollers? are the auxiliary drop rollers 125'which are also arranged as twin rollers or as airs 'of inde endent rollers. These drop rollbrs 125 are eely journaled at 126 upon the forward ends. of rock arms 127 ivoted at 128 upon the downwardly projecting bracket arms 129 extending below the-comber operati shaft 35 and supported fromone of the main rackets which Is mounted upon one of the central frame pieces 12. Projecting rearwardly from each rock arm 127 is a finger 130 carry--' ing a laterally projecting pin or log 131 u on which is'pivoted the lower end of a ro or pitman 133 which is pivotally connected at its upper end with a rock arm 135 mounted upon a rock shaft 136 which passes through and is freely journaled upon suitable bearings in the main bracket.67 and an auxiliary bracket 137 secured thereto. The rock shaft 136 has secured to its opposite and 'gcars as above explained.
I a rock arm 138 to the free end of which at 139 is pivoted a downwardly projectin link 140' which is pivotally connected at its ower end with the rock shaft 51 by which the combing wheelie raised and lowered. From this ar rarigement it will be observed that when the combing wheel is raised away from the pile of sheets, the auxiliary twin drop rollers 125 will also be raised.
- It will be observed articularly with reference to Fi 1 ofthe' rawings that the leading ed e 0 the sheet which engages and actuates the tripping fingers 100 is firmly supported upon both sides of eaehtripping finger and positively fed by the under twin rollers 7 andthe upper twin drop rollers 125. This provides a very effective gaging edge. for actuatingthe trippin fin ers.
Extending longitu inall y of the machine,
at eaehside is a rock shaft -155journaied in bracket arms 156 extending down from the auxiliary frame pieces 12.. At the'forward end of each of these rock shafts is a rock arm 157 carrying at its upper end an antifriction roller 158,'which-operates in engagement with aface' cam 159, keyed to .the camshaft 20. Each of the rock shafts 1'55 carries a'horizonta'l rock arm which is adjustable longitudinally of the machine, and carries a weighted tail gripper 1 60 ofthesame construction as .fully set forth in my above named patents.
The following brief explanation will make clear the operation of my improved machine: It being understood that a machine embodying m improvements is provided with twosets 0 sheet combing mechanisms, each independently-controlled bya sheet actuated tripping device as described, the machine is started in operation and the combing wheels lowered .upon the top of the pile of sheets, the combing wheels being driven through the i In this normal 0 erativc'position of the machine, the spring eiiavating mechanisms for the combcrs are held out of action by the latching arms 63 and latching bars 60,- the rollers 91 being in peripheral contact with and driven by the constantly running rollers 81, and the tripdrop'rollers 8 are elevated awa from the ordin'ary under feed rollers 6, an the auxiliary twin drop rollers 125 are running in eripheral oontact with the under twin r0 lers 7. .The tail gri pers 160 are held out of contact with the pile.
The two combing wheels will continue to o crate until the forward ed e of the top s root in front of one of the com ing wheels 1s moved forward sufficiently to engage and actuate one of the tripping fingers 100. In a combing machine in which a number of the sheets at the top of the pile are gradually sepsee,
arated and shifted forwardly, the combing wheels operate but a moment to shift the top sheet" into registered position. The instant that the sheet engages one of the trip pin fingers, the actuated tripping fin er wi cause the plate or blade 106 connected the'rewith to enter between the rotatin' rollers 81' and 91, with the result that the ro' ler 91 will be raised sufficiently to cause latching arm 63 to'be movedfrom beneath the roller 64 of one r of the latching bars 60, which frees the'spring device and permitsjt toinstantly act upon the rock arm 51 for elevating the combing wheel away from the pile of sheets andarrests the action of the particular combing wheel upon the sheets. This "upward movement of the roller 91 under the action of the in t e rod or pitman 113, as shown in Fig. 4 of the draw'in s. 'This'action is immediatelyfollowed by't e same operation on the other combing wheel, as the ed'ge of'the sheet in rested by these independent sheet-actuated dril -Wings.
trippingdevicegthe sheet will be found to be in registered position in readiness for the operation of the delivery' drop roller .mechanism whic lf comes. intolay to feed: theregis;
tered sheet fromthe-pile of the feeding machine and deliver it to the printing re'ss folding machine or other machine whlc tie to operate upon theisheets'. In the normal operation of the feeding machine, it will be found that both combing wheels are thrownout of o eration'at approximately the same time,. t ere usually being but slight variations in the position of the sheets upon the pile-. Each of the auxiliary twin drop rollers 125 is moved into and out of operative position simultan'eously 'with the combing wheel .in. front of which it-o'pe'r'ates. As the successive sheets are engaged and fed off by the de livery drop roller mechanism, the tail grips 160 enuage the under sheet of thepile-just back oi the rear edge'of the top sheet or holding thepile in place. Coincident with the o eration of the delivery drop roller, the high portions of controllingcams 119 engage the antifriction rollers 118 of rock arms 116 and cause the upwardmovement of rods or pitmen .113 for elev'at n'gl the movable supports or' rock arms '67 of t .e tripping mechanism. When the rock arms 67 are raisedthe trippin fingers 100 will be sup orted above the' pat of the-sheet being de ivered, so as to entirel relieve the sheetfrom its engagement with the-"tripping fingers. This osition of the arts is shown in Fig. -5 o the n this action of the controlling cams, it will be understood that the first'ups Ward impulse of rod or pitman 113 ,takes up.
tripping finger is permitted by the slot 113 tiveposition, it being understood that snnultaneously with the return of the tripping mechanisms'to their normal 0' erative position, the cams 58 will forei ly rock the sleeves 50 to permit the combing wheels 40 to again fallinto operative engagement with the top of the pile of sheets, and to compress the springs and reset the latching mechanisms. There are two important advantages in the construction covered by my present application over the structure of my above named application Serial No. 386,602. In the first p ace the present structure is simpler and more economical to manufacture, and in the second place the improved structure permits reater rapidity'inthe delivery of sheets from t e machine because the action of moving-the tripping fingers out of the path of the sheets in a vertical direction is more direct than the-action in the-mace 'f e of said former application, in which t li' trippingfingers aremovcd upon their journals, 1
